    Doc, well thought out and written post. I have two thoughts though. I agree on the point about not being able to build chanpionship teams, per se. You need a chance. But the Twins really didn't have that chance when stacked up against the AL. They could handle the Cental when it was weak, but were defenseless against the better teams. Almost to the point of embarrassment. Secondly, Ryan might have a desire to define his career, I am sure he does. But he has no need to save himself. Outside the guy behind the counter at the Post Office, no one in America has more job security. He might re-retire, but to hear the words, "you're fired" he is going to have to tune into reruns of an old reality TV show!

    The who could have seen Mauer rebound arguement has two problems. The first is iffy, meaning he was in year three of concussion recovery, which is beginning to look like the timeline for recovery. The second is absolute. Joe Mauer was not going to sit and be replaced by anyone, and likely won't be for the next two years. They didn't do it before when he struggled, and is no reason to think they would this year. I doubt the possibility of a down year by Mauer ever entered into an equation. IF you had no intent to trade Plouffe, value wise or for a philosophical reason, then you should not have acquired Park. That money should have been spent for pitching, or catching. Park has surprised me, I thought he would struggle more. But they haven't even began to work him yet, and I have a nagging suspicion that he is jumping FB's. Plus I cannot see any reason to believe he goes into a league with far superior pitching, and his SO's decline. If that's the case, we need ABW on a plane tonight'!

    I agree whole heartedly. But my enthusiasm for your article, is dampened by the knowledge that everyone knows who Ryans replacement will be. Just the initials will do! RA

    I can get Sano out with a good pitch. Mauer has proven of his career, that you can't do the same to him. I am not dissing Sano, I am a big fan. And frankly the last half of '15 I"m with you. But Joe seems to have recovered his mojo!

    If you build your roster around a plethora of corner/DH type players. You should be able to carry a catch first hit second defensive catcher. At least you should be able to..

When the offense has actually scored a couple of runs, the pitching hasn't held up." Which is the definition of a mediocre team. Good enough to see hope in one area one day, and bad enough to collapse in another the next. Ryan has to know that he cannot win with this roster. The current veterans, as a group, are not capable of winning anything of significance. This list includes SP, RP, and position players. There is a distinct difference between being ML capable, and being the lead contributor to a winning team. Ryan either is delusional, or does not have the "intestinal fortitude" to put up with losses by young players. For some unknown reason he can stomach 4 years of ineptitude by veteran offcasts, but will not stick with the learning curve of high ceiling rooks. So he ends up trying to play both ends against the middle. Sports are cyclical, he needs to accept that, and not imagine he can level the cycles. FA, and the inverse order of the draft pretty much rule that out!

    You might have to higher than that. Can anyone give a legitimate example of the Pohlads making an obvious, and legitimate effort to win. I mean WIN, as in being competitive enough to beat any team. You might not necessarily do it, but you should have the ability and chance. Even when we were winning those coveted AL Central titles, we were cannon fodder for the East. Ugh!

    I doubt it will happen, but it would truly be a classic Twins Way move. It would be entertaining watching them try to spin it. And remember, Bud Grant, Terry Ryan, and Flip Saunders. It's not out of the realm. Soul crushing yes, but definitely doable! Just the fact that it is, speaks volumes of the disfunction in place!

    For a bench player, Mastro. He can pinch run, and play defense. I don't think Plouffe will be back quite as soon as some think. There is no sense to bring up Vargas or ABW. the Twins are overloaded with corner IF and OF players, and even if ABW were on the bench, Kurt would still hit with the bases loaded and down 4, two outs in the ninth!

    Did it start with the Sano Experiment? After Ryan announced Sano in RF, Molitor specifically mentioned LF as a preferred spot. Mistakes like that are not normally made. but RB is right about one thing, there is something odd going on, we are SO desperate for pitching we have screwed up the roster to a new level, then we jerk the starter after 4+ innings, and miraculously have so much pitching we don't need the new guy. Topped off by sending Kepler back to Rochester, and the guy who hands out AB's bemoaning Keplers lack of AB. It's sort of like me sitting in my chair, bemoaning the fact my lawn isn't mowed!

    That was a no brainer. Taking Nunez crazy BABIP out of the equation, Mauer is the only guy on this team to currently fear.

    I hope they are not waiting on Plouffe. His type of injury is notorious for taking raf longer to heal than originally thought.
