  1. If this continues, I think Ryan will be a buyer but he won't be buying a Tulo or Hamels. He'll be trying to find a bargin that helps in the short term without giving up too much that affects the longterm. He won't add 100m contract or a 4 year commitment. But there will be a lot of sellers. A quick look. Oakland will be sellers - Kazmir is a FA at the end of the year, Reddick at the end of 2016. Twins could try for one of them without having to deal Sano or Buxton. And Ryan and Beane have made several trades over the years. Miami might be a seller (although who knows with their GM becoming their manager). Also, anyone notice how god-awful Yelich has been since he signed that huge contract? Is he a buy low guy that they'd move, hoping to save 50m? Philly will move Howard and Revere (it has its own thread). Reds will trade Cueto (FA after the year) and Jay Bruce (FA after 2016). Rockies would trade Morneau back to us. The Brewers entire team will probably be traded.
  2. I, like others, think the depth is key here. Some guys might not improve but we have real options behind them. Buxton, Santana, Sano, Meyer, Oliveras, Milone, Pinto etc could all come up this year and help in some capacity. I'm still a big believer in a healthy Arcia. I agree with others that it's time to put Escobar back at short and Santana in AAA for a bit. But this has been a fun team to watch, no question.
  3. Too early to think about it. He's hitting well and on pace for a 4 WAR year so he probably wants to play again. They'll cross that bridge when it happens. For now, let's hope that he continues to have a great year and leads the Twins to meaningful games in Sept.
  4. In the last week, this has changed By standings, the Twins are a 95-67 team By pyth they are an 88-74 team By base runs they are a 70-92 team. So, good week for us.
  5. Houston blogs really want them to take Tucker over Cameron, for whatever that's worth. I think I'd prefer Jay to Tucker but I really don't know enough about either to have a worthwhile opinion.
  6. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/126520330/jonathan-mayo-byron-buxton-headlines-prospect-team-of-the-week Callis and Mayo of mlbpipeline (I think they are the best prospect guys around) made their prospect team of the week. This week it includes both Buxton and Kepler. On Buxton they wrote: "Reports of Byron Buxton's demise have been greatly exaggerated. It's true that the game's top prospect got off to a sluggish start with the Twins' Double-A Chattanooga team, leading to concern about his future. It's looking like it was more rust than anything else, a product of the talented center fielder missing so much time in 2014 due to injury. His overall numbers may still seem pedestrian, like his .267 average, but he's now fourth in the Southern League in slugging percentage (.506), second in RBIs (33) and fifth in stolen bases (13-for-14). This past week, May 18-24, Buxton raised his batting average 26 points and his slugging percentage 58 points, making him the most impressive among our Prospect Team of the Week honorees." On Kepler "The Twins have been patient in waiting for the German-born Kepler to start using his raw tools in games more consistently. It looks like it's starting to click. Kepler doesn't have enough at-bats to qualify yet, but his average would be second in the Southern League if he did. Kepler hit in all seven games last week and has an active nine-game streak going. He had three multi-hit games last week, highlighted by a three-hit, three-RBI game on May 21."
  7. Well, if there are only 4 characters you want to read about there's not really much to say. I disagree, I find nearly all of the characters interesting and am glad for the "dead end streets" or tangents they've led us on even if most of the characters won't be vital to the end story. I'm honestly surprised that someone who has read all those books is only interested in a handful of the characters. I'm not sure what "repetitive behavior" you are referring to either.
  8. This is a fun season so far. Best since 2010 so just enjoy it. I thought they could be a .500ish team and right now they look better than that. And it looks like they have the depth needed to overcome some bad play as the year continues so that's good, too. It also helps that no other team really looks great - the AL is full of cruddy teams. The AL Central might be the best division.
  9. I actually disagree with you quite a bit here (not on the rape thing though). I think the books have done a pretty good job keeping characters both interesting and true to form for over 4000 pages. There have been some mistakes but they are overblown (and a lot more prevalent in the TV show). I don't have a problem with a book series continuing to expand and add as it goes forward (that makes a lot of sense to me, actually), which is one of the reasons I didn't like the exclusion of Arianna Martell or the (likely) Blackfyre pretender with Griff on the TV show (even though i understood why). I know a TV show can't have all the stuff in the books but the dumbing down of the northern politics and the stuff at the wall hurts. That was some of the most fun stuff in the books.
  10. Souhan's take on what we've been talking about. In the next few weeks Santana will be back, pushing someone out of the rotation, Milone has a great ERA etc. http://www.startribune.com/winning-roster-well-stocked-farm-clubs-give-ryan-options/304871141/
  11. True enough but Mauer hasn't been a fulltime catcher for a long time and hasn't been durable for many years, even for a catcher. Fortunately, this year he is staying on the field more.
  12. I think skimping on the first pick to get more in later rounds doesn't makes sense when you don't have a 2nd round pick. Just get the BPA and go from there.
  13. Love the idea of Tate dropping to 6 but I still don't see that happening. Agree that if any of them are there at 6, grab them. Outside of those 3, Allard seems to be linked to us a lot.
  14. Milone is doing great. I'm honestly stunned that we have a LH starter with a track record of success in the majors sitting at AAA because we don't have a place for him in the ML rotation.
  15. I'm not enjoying this season nearly as much as the previous ones. I think the showrunners have had trouble adapting without the source material and it feels more like a predictable TV show rather than a unique show it was the first few years. I don't know if they could have telegraphed the Shireen thing any more obviously had they just had Melisandre stand behind her with lighter fluid. The coincidences keep adding up - Jamie and Bronn getting to Dorne just as the sand snakes attack? Brienne running into Sansa at the inn? Dany being at the slave pit Jorah was at? Pretty weak. And I've been one to defend the show against misogyny charges in the past but what happened to Sansa is horrible and wasn't in the books and the excuse for it - she's taking Jenny Poole's place doesn't hold up. And last night they had 5 minutes of nothing just to show us a naked Tyene Sand - in another event that wasn't in the books. I still like the show but it's not as good as it was.
  16. I didn't watch the game today but Gibson's box score is great. Besides the K's, he got 12 groundball outs. Pretty impressive. Anyone watching notice if Herrmann was getting Gibson lower strike calls than Suzuki? In a few of Gibson's starts it looked like he wasn't getting the low strike called and when he had to move the pitch higher, it was hit harder. Any thoughts on Herrmann as a catcher? Defensive stats seem to like him but it's probably SSS at this point.
  17. and waiting is fine, too. I don't think Rosario is quite ML ready yet and Robinson isn't a starter but I do think a healthy Arcia will be a big improvement when he's back, regardless of whether it's LF or DH. As you say, it's not June yet and we don't know what this team is or how a trade might disrupt it. But eventually they need better hitting, either out of the players they have or to get new players.
  18. Soon, not quite sure when, the OF will be Rosario/Buxton/Sano with Arcia at DH and Plouffe at 3B - Hicks may be a 4th OFer. I think Plouffe has played himself into a longterm option at third for the Twins. Sano's arm should be fine in right.
  19. That's the problem. Right now, Sano is a AA player not a ML option at third base or DH. If the Twins think they can compete for a playoff spot, they should no longer be waiting on prospects. That doesn't mean give up on the important guys still in the system. But right now, today, the DH position is not flooded with good options. Vargas hasn't shown that he's better than Parmelee and a playoff team shouldn't rely on Parmelee to plug an important offensive position. Maybe Howard isn't the right guy to target. I think he's a decent fit b/c his salary and length of commitment to him is low. He wouldn't cost a lot in prospects and he has a pretty decent track record of hitting. But maybe he's done. Another poster noted his worsening walk and strike out numbers. So maybe pass on him. But the team, if it thinks it's a playoff contender, should do something about the lack of production from CF and DH.
  20. It's not really a concern right now. And the way Sano is playing, maybe the Twins bring him up soon anyway and make it moot. But no, I don't think the Twins will move Sano to DH soon. Right now the Twins are getting nothing out of DH. This wasn't hard to see coming since Vargas seemed to be our first option. I don't think it's a bad idea for the team to add another bat (be it Howard or someone else).
  21. Howard's WAR value is destroyed by his defensive numbers. He'd be DH here (although he has higher WAR this year than our first baseman). Neither Sano nor Buxton would be blocked by either guy. Depends on what we trade but both would be upgrades right now. There might be better upgrades elsewhere but those two would probably be cheaper in terms of what we would have to give up.
  22. Who on earth is our potentially cheap Howard? Because it would be awesome to have that guy.
  23. Toronto isn't going to move the face of their franchise for the Twins 12-16 best prospect. He was a 6 WAR player last year. If the Twins want him, they'll have to pay real value.
  24. Except neither Revere or Howard are replacement level, neither block top prospects and you are overrating Reed and Hu (and Vargas). Neither would be that expensive either - Phillies would eat a lot of Howard's salary and Revere is still in arbitration years.
