  1. http://www.startribune.com/twins-savvy-plouffe-goes-from-stopgap-to-standout/304064641/ Nice little piece on Plouffe, who, in Souhan's words, may be the best all around player on the Twins and no longer a stop gap to Sano. Plouffe also seems to acknowledge that he's grown up in the organization and wants to remain in MN. I do think that if the Twins decided to trade him, they'd get a very nice haul. And he's 29 this year and under team control for several more years so other teams should/will covet him. But keeping him around makes a lot of sense, even if Sano is everything we hope for (and he's really turned a corner in May). He's a good player and it's unlikely that Sano will be better at third defensively, even though his bat will probably be better. Sano can still go to a corner OF and eventually replace Mauer, if needed. But I like the idea of a lineup where Plouffe is hitting well and not our third or fourth best hitter.
  2. Looks like BA came out with a new mock draft yesterday - http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/mlb-mock-draft-2015-version-2-0/ Has the Twins taking Daz Cameron. Also says the Twins are intrigued by Walker Buehler, who I really don't want and lefty Tyler Jay, who will probably be drafted by the White Sox and become another Chris Sale.
  3. BP has a little on draft prospect Swanson, more behind the paywall. "If there’s a player in this draft class who has locked up a top five selection, it’s Swanson, and this weekend was a prime example of why he’s liked by so many in the industry. The Commodore shortstop went 4-for-11 with two walks in the weekend series for Alabama, with two of the hits going for doubles, and zero strikeouts over the three games as well. “There are certain kids who just get it, and [swanson] just appears to get it," said an AL scout. “The hit tool is an easy plus for me, and I think there might be some power coming, especially if you can make some adjustments with the lower half."
  4. Agreed. I still don't see any realistic scenario where any of the consensus top three drop to #6 but maybe whoever is #4 on our list can. (An unrealistic option would be DBacks taking a low slot guy #1, Astros nabbing Tucker and Cameron (ignoring Rodgers who I guess is a Close client) and somehow leaving Tate, Rodgers and Swanson for # 3, 4 and 6. Can't see that happening).
  5. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2015_05_17_milmlb_nynmlb_1&mode=video Met's super rookie Syndergaard accidentally hit Gomez with a 97 mph fastball. Apparently it looks worse than it was and Gomez is ok. No concussion somehow.
  6. He'll go back to AAA and be back up here again this season. He's shown some flashes but he also has a lot to work on. I think it was a good experience for him to be in the majors and I've enjoyed watching him play, but he's just not ready.
  7. I'm ok with this. He hasn't been playing much. Vargas needs to fix a few things so hopefully getting back to AAA will help.
  8. I'm sure Redmond will get another chance to manage. The Marlins job seems a bit of a rough gig - bad ownership really hurts. I would imagine he gets a spot in the majors again and not in the minors.
  9. These guys never really say anything of substance. On Plouffe, I could see the Twins keeping him and having Sano in a corner. His bat will play anywhere and he's probably athletic enough to hold down RF.
  10. Really nice to see Sano take those walks. His May numbers are fantastic - .321/.406/.625 10bb, 14k, 5 2b, 4 HR.
  11. Yeah, that's not quite how WAR works and the defensive numbers are always the least reliable but Myers and Upton in the corners and no Kemp would look a lot better for them.
  12. Why would you trade him for a lesser prospect? If the Twins were going to move Buxton, they could package him for someone like Hamels or Tulo or such. Sort of like what the Royals did with Myers. Swihart? That sounds like a Red Sox fantasy. That would be a horrific trade for the Twins.
  13. When Mauer signed his deal, I thought it was a good thing. Even if he had to move off of catching, those hit skills of him would make him a great player, even as a full-time DH. I compared him to Molitor and figured if Molitor could remain a very valuable hitter into his mid-30s (and beyond) Mauer could too. But for whatever reason, Mauer aged very badly. His 28-32 years were a waste and I don't see him getting better as he gets older.
  14. One last thought on this, even if you like WAR, an 8 WAR difference (by b-r) between two players over 8 years is actually within the margin of error for WAR.
  15. Even with those numbers, Mauer isn't 60% "more than" Hunter. Hunter's total is 60% of Mauer's total so Mauer would have produced 40% more? Maybe I'm reading too much into his tweet but if someone did something 60% more, I'd expect his number to be more than half of the others number. I guess he's arguing that the 12 WAR difference is 60% of Hunter's total as opposed to about 40% of Mauer's total? Oh well, it doesn't really matter.
  16. God, I pray the answer is Willie Mays.
  17. Admittedly, I haven't had to do math in 20 years but that doesn't seem right. Since 2008, Mauer has amassed 32 WAR to Hunter's 24. That 8 WAR difference can't equate to 60%. (Even if we think WAR is a valid stat to use) It's about 25% more, isn't it? And I'm having the same problem with the salary. In that time period, Mauer has made 144.25m to Hunter's 126m. That 18m is a lot more than 5% of Hunter's salary. Isn't it around 15% more?
  18. Bradley's struggles really surprised me. I thought he was a touch overrated - I never thought he'd be an all star. But he was a solid hitter in the minors with good plate discipline. And he was going up to Fenway? Man, I was sure he'd hit enough to stay in the lineup. Instead, he walked 40 times and struck out 150. He could be a change of scenery guy. No question he was pressing. But with the struggles of Bogaerts (and a lesser extent Betts) I wonder if something else is going wrong in Boston. Obviously, it depends on the price, but I'd take a flier on him and see if Bruno can find something in his swing to fix.
  19. Any word/thoughts on Nikorak?
  20. Yeah, Bregman might be the right pick but he seems boring as well. I'd rather the Twins take Nikorak, Allard or Aiken. But it's probably a good thing for all of us that I'm not the one in charge of drafting. If the Twins think Bregman's the right pick, they should do it.
  21. Looks like the Red Sox are/were willing to move Bradley for a solid relief pitcher this past summer. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/5/15/8609657/2015-mlb-draft-early-mock-draft Bradley is more or less the Red Sox's Aaron Hicks - a former top prospect who couldn't hit at the ML level. The Red Sox signed a Cuban CF to a 70+ million dollar deal and have Mookie Betts in CF so Bradley started the year back in AAA. He hit well but has been horrible in the 4 games since he was called back up. My guess is that most teams could get him for not much right now. The Twins seem to have some future options at CF and probably don't need him but he would give them more options/depth.
  22. Minor league ball put out their first mock today - http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/5/15/8609657/2015-mlb-draft-early-mock-draft Twins take Bregman. He also goes through the second round supp picks and has the Twins nabbing Donnie Dewees there.
  23. Probably not worth squabbling over. I read durable and productive to mean that Hunter had the advantage over Mauer in games played and counting stats (HR/RBI/H etc). Souhan mentioned that Mauer had the better rate stats. And the larger point remains, for everyone who hated Hunter on a one year deal, Mauer should be public enemy number one. Unlike Hunter, Mauer is actually potentially blocking younger guys like Pinto. And, unlike Hunter, he's locked up for several more years. The defensive numbers don't like him much. He's basically a replacement level player right now.
