  1. It would be nice if he was ready for the majors at 21 but even as the #4 overall pick, no one thought that was likely. Most scouting reports on him at the time were really impressed by his athletic ability and stuff but almost all of them said that he would have to learn how to pitch. I'm also not sure it's fair to suggest that he should be ready with "2+ minor league seasons" under his belt. He was a HS pitcher. The #1 overall pick, a 4 year college senior, has yet to debut. Trey Ball, the next HS pitcher taken, has similar numbers through the same levels. A few of the college pitchers taken have had a cup of coffee in the majors but Stewart's progression seems to be just fine at this point. Of all our prospects, I think I'm most curious about how the Twins deal with him. He did a full season at high A last year so maybe they let him make the jump straight to AA. Obviously, this is probably a pretty big year for him, at least prospect-wise.
  2. I actually sent in a question asking about Stewart as a prospect but he didn't answer it.
  3. We hate on Pelfrey a bit but he wasn't horrible here. He was worth 2 WAR both last year and in 2013. His FIP (if you like it and people seem to) was 4.00 both years. The contract will cover his age 32-33 seasons. Obviously, 2014 was a lost year for him but he's probably a good bet for 30 starts or so each year. 8m/year doesn't seem too outrageous for that. Good for him.
  4. Good luck to him (except when he plays us).
  5. Every team has question marks - last year we were wondering if Hunter was a good signing, if Hicks could even be a good player and if Mauer could bounce back. We were terrified of a regression season from Hughes and Suzuki. We were sure that if we were going to be good it was because Danny Santana and Vargas showed that their rookie seasons weren't flukes. And we know how that turned out. And we should be ok again this year for the same reason we were ok last year - young players and depth. Last year, Rosario, Escobar, Sano and Duffey picked the team up. We still have some pretty solid depth that isn't projected (at this time) to be starters on opening day (or possibly even on the opening day roster) - Arcia, Vargas, Kepler, Polanco, Berrios, Burdi, Meyer etc. The Twins have some really nice talent - probably the most talent since either 06 or 2010 - in their projected lineup. The season won't go exactly as planned - they never do - but this team should be competing for the playoffs and the AL central next year. Should be fun.
  6. My faith in this being solved died after Sandy Hook. If that didn't get it done, nothing will.
  7. I remember having discussions about his attitude last year and I thought that there was something about him that would make him less likely to fail like Aaron Hicks did. Rosario doesn't seem (from a mile away) like the kind of guy who has issues with self-doubt which a lot of us (again, from a mile away) thought was part of Hicks' problems. Basically, he seems like a cocky guy (which can be good if harnessed correctly).
  8. There have been rumors/issues about Rosario's make up for years. Not giving full effort, being bored with the game. Not always respecting the game. Stuff like that. I remember a Reusse quote about this time a year ago quoting a Twins official about his AFL success as something like "he decided to care." I think Reusse used it as a positive when he was called up, saying that Rosario would meet the challenge. Anyway, something like that. But Rosario is also a huge Molitor guy (and vice versa) so I think he'll be ok.
  9. Klaw's chat had a few Twins questions today - he replies in bold. What's the scouting report on Kohl Stewart? Twins fans are calling him a bust because of the lack of strike outs. Does he have time to turn it around? Twins fans calling a 20-year-old a "bust" by scouting the stat line are not actually Twins fans. Which do you believe will have a better career, Max Kepler or Odubel Herrera. Also, have you played with any of the simulation baseball games like DMB, if so which do you like best? Thanks! Kepler, and no, I haven't played any sim games. Is Jose Berrios a (potential) front of the rotation starter? I know you've had concerns about his height limiting his ceiling. Don't think so. He's likely to be too homer-prone with that flat fastball. Byung Ho Park - thoughts on his deal? Less than I thought he'd get, which is good for the Twins and also an example of how this posting system sucks for the players.
  10. The Braves non-tendered Mike Minor. The lefty had surgery on his shoulder last year - torn labrum - which is riskier than TJ surgery. I'd guess that he'll eventually throw for clubs to show he's healthy. From mlbtraderumors: "Having spent the entire season on the Major League disabled list, Minor accrued a full year of service in 2015, leaving him with four years, 138 days of service time. As such, a team that elects to sign him will have control of him not only in 2016 but also in 2017, should it feel comfortable going through the arbitration process with him next winter."
  11. I'm not sure Souhan got the vibe from the FO but it didn't really make sense to let Sano play OF last year. He was coming back from a missed season, struggled for a month and was in the majors two months later. I remember there was a lot of talk about moving Sano to AAA and playing in the OF but the Twins just promoted him straight up instead. As to Kepler, nice article to read. Hope he's a star.
  12. The White Sox guys might be worth looking into a bit - Turner was a top 25 prospect and is only 25. Maybe he can excel in the pen? Flowers is a league average catcher.
  13. Kepler will, and should, open the season in AAA. That will be the case no matter what other changes the Twins make this offseason.
  14. I don't think it's a huge problem although, barring a trade, the Twins will have Arcia on the bench as a LH power bat. In a few years, maybe Kepler adds a bit of pop from the left side. RH pull power seems to play really well at TF. And our lineup has the potential to really destroy strong LH pitching.
  15. That sounds about right. I think Vargas is next out the door.
  16. I do wonder what the Twins think of Sano's defense. They sent him to winter ball to play third and he apparently never got into the OF. But if the Twins think he can't play third - that he'd be Nick Castenellos out there - then they should keep Plouffe.
  17. Kepler needs more time in AAA. Same with Walker. Arcia was horrible last year. Twins shouldn't expect anything from him this year. If they're all good, great. Too much talent is a great problem to have and the Twins can cross it when they know what they have.
  18. From that article - "It’s those talents that landed Park on the Twins radar more than a decade ago when Byung-Ho was still in high school. With a scout permanently placed in Korea, the Twins have followed Park through his amateur and professional Korea, taking a liking to him very early on. In fact, they liked him so much that the forecasted exactly when he would become available for posting with the MLB after his military requirement was fulfilled in Korea." So, if nothing else, the Twins have done their due diligence on this guy.
  19. Good post. I do think Sano will be ok in the OF. He's a big dude but he runs well enough. He's big, not unfit. He won't be worse than Hammer or Cuddyer and could be better. His arm is strong. And with Buxton in CF, range won't be the worst issue. Park is the million dollar question but I think he ends up being a solid #5 hitter for us. Others have made the adjustment, he can too. I think Murphy/Suzuki platoon will be good enough. I'm not really concerned there, honestly. Mauer .... man. The optimist in me says that many non-PED guys that were great hitters (and Mauer was) had a great career year after a few down years. Maybe it's luck, maybe it's health but Mauer could have a rebound season. But yeah.
  20. I do honestly think that is Ryan's plan. But I think he'll change his plan if someone makes a strong offer for Plouffe. But maybe Sano's defense at third isn't as good as the Twins want. There is no need to move Plouffe if the Twins don't trust Sano's defense.
  21. Yeah, but I thought a 30 home run guy (potentially) would be worth more than that.
  22. I like him as a bench player - he can back up in the IF and CF and his legs give the Twins a good pinch runner late in the game. That's not a horrible bench guy to have.
  23. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/mark-trumbo-steve-clevenger-trade-mariners-orioles.html#comments Trumbo and apparently someone else from Seattle's 40 man roster have been traded to Baltimore for the Orioles back-up catcher, Steve Clevenger. Clevenger is 30 and has 416 ML at-bats, is out of options and has a bad defensive rep but is worth two players - admittedly, two very flawed players. Catchers are a lot more valuable than I think.
  24. Honestly, I'd be ok if they all got arbitration.
