  1. I think there might be something to that. I know I read something about Molitor being a little upset/surprised at Hicks for requesting some days off down the stretch but I can't remember where I read that. In any event, I certainly don't think it was a horrible trade.
  2. Mauer lost a foot race to first against CC Sabathia. He cannot be an OFer. I also think the risk of injury to Sano is being greatly exaggerated here. He's big but he's in good shape. I like him more out there than Mauer, for sure.
  3. Wow, the Giles trade is turning up great for the Phillies. Apparently the original trade which had Fischer blew up because of a physical.
  4. I don't think any current pitcher is a lock but I think CC, Kershaw, Grienke, Buerhle, King Felix should. A few others have HOF talent but it's too early to tell - (Price, Sale). A few hitters would be locks (esp if we keep the PED specter out of this) and I think ARod, Pujols, Miggy, Ichiro, Wright, Mauer, Beltre all absolutely belong. Beltran might be there too. Utley's a good litmus test on how much you value you peak over longevity. Trout and Cano aren't there yet but are close. Guys like Kinsler, Pedroia, Longo, Ortiz, Texeira probably don't make it.
  5. Good luck to him.
  6. Remember that the sources we fans have are imperfect too. I'm paraphrasing but BA thought that Astros RP Guadin was a lock to be picked, probably at #1. A LHP who touched 1000. Someone was going to take a flier on him. But he wasn't drafted.
  7. Those are Jones' numbers in A+, not AA. The concern is that the more advanced hitters aren't having trouble with his fastball, have better control of the zone and won't swing at stuff they shouldn't.
  8. Is it? I admit, I'm gonna give him some credit if he's just trolling people based on the book. Well done, Jose.
  9. I ranked Ryan ahead of Hoyer and Lunhow. I think Ryan has done a better job considering where he came in and what the situation was when he took over compared to the other two. He doesn't have the financial resources of the Cubs and didn't have 4+ years of high picks already in the system that Lunhow did (not to mention, the permission to lose 110 games). I do think the Twins will be better than the Astros and Cubs (although I also believe strongly that the NL is an inferior league so I'm not overly concerned about the Cubs record) over the next five years, too.
  10. No, you're right. No GM (Ryan, Hoyer, Cashman) makes moves in a vacuum but I think a lot of people probably think Epstein in the GM, not Hoyer.
  11. Sure but that ship sailed long ago. You've been ripping the rebuild for years even as people explained it. Why should we expect you to stop your subtle digs now? I tend to think Hoyer, Ryan and Lunhow are all doing a good job although I'd rank them Ryan, Hoyer, Lunhow. Each had their own problems and advantages unique to the situation.
  12. It must really suck being the GM of the Cubs and watching everyone praise Theo for your moves ...
  13. You mean when they were able to sign Lester to his 150m contract? If you think Hoyer or Lunhow are doing a good job on their rebuilds, there's no reason to think Ryan isn't. (if your snarky reply is 'oooo but who made the playoffs last year' don't bother).
  14. Heyward is the ultimate test case for how much you value defensive stats. His offensive numbers make him a 3.5ish WAR guy but dWAR adds another 2 WAR - basically a better defensive RF than Clemente.
  15. Yeah, one report I read was that the players that aren't represented by Boras feel that the team isn't interested in their future. So you have a team divided by player/management, player/player and (under Williams) player/manager. Seems like a fun team to root for, no?
  16. In fairness, I believe Molitor used Perkins a lot more than the usual 3-out save last year. But I'm too lazy to look that up. But I'm pretty sure our relief pitchers were used differently than how Gardy would have used them - whether that was a good idea is another debate.
  17. Sure, but you still think Hrbek pushed Gant off the bag.
  18. I'm not sure. I mean, if we put him at closer and he had a solid year, he'd probably reject a QO but if we used him as a set-up guy, I'm not sure (although, we could just offer a QO and pay a high price for an extra year if we had to). I don't mind making him the closer over Perkins, mind you. I think that would be fine, actually. In any event, I don't think he'll cost much and I like him a lot as a relief pitching option. I've wanted the Twins to make this deal since Paps got traded.
  19. Yeah, I don't think Plouffe is a fit and, frankly, they probably aren't expecting ML player in return. Plouffe would be a pretty big overpay, in my opinion. The Nats need to move him, he's only got 1 year left, he'll make 8m+ and, as others have said, he could have some attitude issues. He won't cost as much as Jepsen to get.
  20. Pretty sure most people would think comments along the lines of "Ryan is happy settling for mediocrity" or Ryan doesn't know how to put a roster together go a bit beyond "critical." You stuff gets old Dave.
  21. Just because he throws hard and has control problems doesn't mean if he can suddenly fix it, he's an upside guy. His upside is Jim Hoey. You don't waste 40 man roster spots for a guy who can, in two years, become Jim Hoey.
  22. I care nothing for the NL. It's AAAA, boring baseball and I mock it whenever I can. The 06 could have won the NL central.
  23. What you don't seem to understand is that Jones isn't an upside guy. I'm not sure how why you keep failing to understand that. Stop scouting a stat line. He's not a good prospect. This is the Slama stuff all over again. Jones lacks control, is too old for his level, has failed at AA, is extremely replaceable and is not worth a 40 man roster spot. He might become Jim Hoey if everything breaks for him - although Hoey had already made the majors and dominated the upper minors at the same age. 40 man roster spots go to guys who might in some conceivable way be needed in 2016. Jones, as Seth and Thyrlos have pointed out, is waaaaaay down the depth chart. For him to make the 2016 team, he'd need to have a break out year and a roster spot to open up.
  24. Aaron Hicks had one good month at the plate and hasn't been able to hit otherwise. He was blocking the best prospect in the game and his bat certainly won't play in a corner - where he'd block Sano, Rosario and Kepler. The Twins traded him away for what looks to be a nice solid catcher. Cripes, even Klaw liked the trade. Ryan did a good job.
