  1. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/braves-ender-inciarte-trades.html Not really a surprise and the article merely states that the teams have touched base but nothing is close. From the article, "Still, Minnesota has been prominently linked to Storen in previous seasons, so it’ll be interesting to see if they take that interest to another level this winter, when Storen is said to be available in trades." Considering the bridges burned in Washington, I think the Twins could get Storen for their tradeable 2nd round pick. He's a FA at the end of the year.
  2. Because of the haul the Phillies got, ESPN's sweetspot had a nice little piece on the value of relief pitchers. Here's a very interesting closing part. "In 2015, 59 relievers pitched at least 50 innings with an ERA of 3.00 or under. In 2014, there were 67 such relievers. In 2013, there were 65 such relievers. The number of relievers who did this in two of those three seasons? Forty. The number who did this in all three? Just 12. Relievers burn quickly; very few are dominant year after year after year. The Astros believe they've acquired one of those few in Giles, preferring to bet on him rather than Velasquez's less-known future." The three Twins that would be on that list are Perkins, Boyer and Swarzak.
  3. I'm sure you didn't use that phrase but you were certainly among those who agreed with that sentiment. You and I had a lot of discussions around this time last year where I said the Twins were on the right track, I liked the Hunter signing etc and you wondered when we could expect to see results. I said this was already a .500ish team. You disagreed. yada, yada, yada. Anyhow, we both agree on the young/new players. I think the Twins will sign some bullpen arm that won't excite you (and will lead Dave to create a new thread about the Twins settling for mediocrity) but I don't think we'll agree on what a "good player" is.
  4. I just like Velasquez a lot - when I was kicking around Plouffe trade ideas, I was wondering if he could come back to us. But Velasquez for Giles straight up is reasonable (although I'd still prefer the starter). But Fischer could be a nice lottery ticket and Olbie is a #5 starter. That's not nothing. They gave up a lot for a proven closer.
  5. I don't really have a problem with it. It's December. He should have some time off. It'll be a long season for him next year so he should be rested.
  6. I believe you and many others had the Twins as big losers at this time last year - their big additions were Torii Hunter and Ervin Santana (although he was a later signee, IIRC). I think this team is a WS constructed team although it needs some experience. But there isn't a guy out there in FA that's going to put us over the top. How fast it takes the young players to play at this level is the only question. I think they'll be a playoff team this year.
  7. How long did the Joe Benson thread go? I think we can make it!
  8. As people have explained, you don't stack your 40 man roster with the #15 relief pitcher over your #3 catcher. You don't like that explanation but it doesn't change how teams operate.
  9. In what world was Zach Jones a "highly ranked prospect"? mlb.com ranked him #23. I mean, Dean was a head scratcher but at least he's thrown 400+ innings at AA and AAA and might play up in the pen.
  10. Fien was a 1.0 WAR pitcher last year in 63 ip. That's actually pretty good for a relief pitcher. Don't like WAR? Only 18% of his inherited runners scored. Also very good for a relief pitcher. His one stat that looks bad was his k-rate, which is the only stat that of Jones' that looks good. And the "settling for mediocrity" BS you keep posting gets old, really fast. We get it, you don't like Ryan. But as many have explained, his moves make sense and what you want would make the team much worse.
  11. I think they could have put Velasquez in the pen and gotten the same value.
  12. Yeah, there were a lot of debates about trading Perkins and I understand the reasoning. But the Twins are now competing for a playoff spot and Perkins is a good part of that bullpen signed to a reasonable team friendly deal. But I agree that Philly made a really nice trade there.
  13. I wasn't trying to make a complete list of good cheap FA relief pitchers over the years but I agree with your second point - the names aren't as important as the end result. If we have a good bullpen next year it might very well be because Perkins, Jepsen, May, Meyer and Burdi are big parts of it as opposed to guys like Broxton or Sipp. I don't care how, I just want a better bullpen.
  14. I don't believe so although in write ups of pitchers, some places will say that player X is going to be a bullpen arm. We saw that a lot with Burdi, who made baseball prospectus' top 101 last year.
  15. I think relief pitchers, as opposed to closers who usually only pitch the ninth with the lead, are pretty unpredictable. Sipp, who everyone seems to want, had ERA+ of 89, 81, 115, 203 the last four years. In those four years he maxed out at 1.7 WAR (1.0 fWAR) and had negative WAR seasons. I do agree there are some relief pitchers with very good track records - O'Day was the guy I wanted but not on a four year deal. Ryan Madson didn't pitch in the majors since 2011 and had a great year this year and turned it into a three year deal. Good for him.
  16. Broxton, Sipp, Cishek, Clippard, Rodney, Abad. I mean take your pick. The link on mlbtr had a bunch of guys. Relief pitchers are pretty combustible but there really isn't that much difference between the majority of them. Some guy like Fein or Burton or Guierrier can carve out some pretty solid seasons after being found in the garbage bin. Who are you worried we missed out on? O'Day for 4/31? 3/25 for Soria? Did you want the Twins to lock up Ryan Madson for his age 35-37 seasons? 2/7 for Oliver Perez? I admit I've been trying to ignore the negative nelly threads so perhaps I missed out on who the big miss was but right now it doesn't look like much reason to be so negative.
  17. Shouldn't a thread like this wait until at least the winter meetings are over or til we see where Sipp is going? Unless I missed something, many good relievers are still out there. According to mlbtraderumors, two LH relief pitchers have signed a ML deal at this point and only 9 non-closers have signed ML deals. Seems a bit early for another "Ryan has failed us" thread. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016-mlb-free-agent-tracker
  18. Yeah, the comments are really bad. I've actually met Deepinder a few times and he's a really nice man. There is no way he'd make up a story like that.
  19. On Stewart it's worth remembering how much fans wanted the Twins to start drafting guys like him - HS pitchers with huge ceilings. But those guys are risks and they don't always pan out. That's why it's risky to take a HS arm, period. The same risk seems to be working out pretty well with Berrios.
  20. Deepinder Mayall, who is the director of the Advocates for Human Rights’ Refugee and Immigrant Program, writes about his run-in with a racist clown at the Vikings game.
  21. I actually don't hate this trade for AZ although it seems like they could've gotten a bit more. I wasn't a big fan of Swanson's in the draft and Blair is a #3 pitcher. I think Incairte is a sell-high guy. The Dbacks still have a pretty good OF on paper with Peralta, Pollock and Cuban Tomas. They have Goldy at first and some young guys around the IF. And a rotation of Grienke, Corbin and Miller is probably enough to win the NL west.
  22. Well, sure. But the fact that athletes get away with things you don't is so obvious now I can't believe people still get upset about it. I think Paps could actually be a good fit for the right team although I'm not sure the Twins are it. He's owed 11m next year so the Nats aren't going to get much (if anything) for him. But he's still a pretty good pitcher. It would be interesting to see if the Twins could deal with him. I think they could and he'd be a pretty nice piece in the pen.
  23. He's arguing that their 2 games suspension of him wasn't legal and he actually might win. But the best part are the comments. http://deadspin.com/report-jonathan-papelbon-files-grievance-against-natio-1746622376 I honestly can't see how the Nats can let him be on their roster next year but they might have to give him away.
  24. Sano (especially) and Rosario were both better prospects than Vargas. Sickels had a good article on Rosario at minor leagueball about what he needs to do to remain a good player. I don't have the link though.
  25. I think they should be a bit better than last year and the Royals should be a bit worse. I think we could win the Central.
