  1. He's a pretty consistent guy - you're going to get a .250/.315/.430 102 OPS+, 3 WAR guy who's under team control for two years and plays solid defense. That's a good thing. On an Astros blog they were talking about a deal for him that would be centered around Micheal Feliz, a hard throwing 23-year old pitching prospect and some throw-ins. I'm not sure we're at a place where we can just assume we can replace Plouffe's production (offensively or defensively) so I don't think we'll trade him.
  2. De Aza is an interesting idea. Houston is looking to upgrade third base - would you take Appel for Plouffe straight up?
  3. Fair question - I think you can say guys like Duffey, Berrios, Kepler, Polanco are exceeding expectations from a few years ago (by varying degrees). Meyer, Stewart, Burdi saw their value decrease (by varying degrees). I think Sano and Buxton are more or less what everyone thought. Same with Walker, actually. May and Rosario are probably around what people thought they'd be (capable ML starters) but may have under/overachieved one way or the other, in the eye of the beholder. I think it's generally hard to decide with A ball guys either way (although I did that with Stewart). I think Gordon is a prospect with a lot of helium and Gonsalves is exceeding expectations of a 4th round guy but it's probably a bit early to call that.
  4. Some of those picks are defensible. I remember Keith Law praising the Twins for getting Shooter Hunt (although he hated the Gutierrez pick) and Bashore was a really exciting pick that just got hurt - which is a problem with a lot of pitchers. Even going back to 2004, BA gave the Twins the only "A" for the draft and they really liked the Rainville pick. Of course, of the supp pitchers they took, only Boyd remained (mostly) healthy. Bashore, Fox, Rainville, Bard and Hunt all spent long periods on the DL.
  5. Biggest surprise for me wasn't the final record, I thought we'd be around .500, but how we did it. I figured Hughes would pitch well, Nolasco and Santana would be solid and Gibson would take a step forward. Got one of those right. So I think the pitching from Duffey, Milone and Pelfrey are the biggest surprises for me. Sure, they aren't great but they gave us, roughly, a combined 350ip and 3.93 era. Biggest surprise for 2016? Man, how about Escobar being an all-star at shortstop?
  6. Nice article. He was a fun player to watch and root for.
  7. Nice list. He's been a big fan of Berrios' for a long time and it's fun to see Berrios beating his expectations. Obviously, having Buxton and Berrios at the top still make this a great system but next years system strength will have to rely on a few guys having break out seasons. In the comments, he mentions Blankenhorn and Cabbage as two guys who could move up.
  8. This will probably become a flame thread but I hope not. I would hire Gardy, I think he does a lot of stuff well and the stuff that annoyed people was blown out of proportion. I think hiring him as a bench coach would be a pretty good idea for SD. Torre used to surround himself with former managers on his staffs and an experienced coach might make it easier for the new manager who has a lot to learn.
  9. This is probably a good reminder how tough it really is to make it although some will probably spin it as the Twins suck. Boyd was #55 overall in his draft (a supp first pick) A bunch of previous #55's included - LeVon Washington, Tommy Joseph, Destin Hood, Nick Hadadone, Brett Anderson, Zach Simons, Billy Buckner, Todd Jennings, Dave Bush, Preston Larrison Brian Tallet, Jay Perez, Tim Lemon, Brandon Parker, Chuck Abott.
  10. Tex would've left MN the second he hit free agency. I mean, I don't like Mauer's current contract but he did first sign an extension that bought out a year of FA before he signed his big contract, IIRC.
  11. Desmond is going to get a nice contract but not from us. I don't think it'd work - he has some nice pop but he does strike out a ton and the AL is harder than the NL. I'm ok with Escobar and trying to make improvements elsewhere.
  12. I'm not sure what to think of Stewart. At the beginning of the season, in one of his chats, Klaw said fans worried about the lack of strike-outs were insane, that when the Twins took Stewart he "was more a thrower than a pitcher" and they were doing a "hell of a job" with him. But I don't know if his position has changed with another full season of - let's say strange - results. So, with Stewart, I really think it's wait and see. The Twins brass doesn't seem overly worried and they promoted him up the line. He pitched well, outside of strike outs, at A+. So, I really don't know what to make of him.
  13. People were complaining about Hunter and Mauer blocking young players - adding Tex doesn't seem to make much sense.
  14. I think people are really overrating Ramos. He's a FA at the end of the year, he's never shown the ability to hit. The only time he's not been an out machine is when he's hit 8th in an NL lineup - in his career when he's not in the 8th spot, his OBP is .280. The concern when the Twins traded him was that he was turning into a Miguel Olivo and that's more or less what's happened. By WAR, he and Suzuki were both within the same margin of error.
  15. I think if the Twins are going to do a trade with the Nats, Drew Storen is more likely the target.
  16. Nonsense - I've already re-posted my criticisms of Hunter from the first post. But I've also pointed out that some people don't know what Hunter actually did say (fake black people) or the extent of his 'very public comments' to show that why I think the level of outrage toward him has been over the top. Don't worry about being polite - if I didn't know you'd report me to the mods, I'd be far more open with my views on some of the racist **** that gets posted around here.
  17. You don't have to be but there certainly are quite a few. Those are probably the same idiots who used to call Tarvaris Jackson "Tar baby" or suggested that black kids are more violent than white kids. Or the guys who roll their eyes at discussions of racism inherent in our society. And I've never been shy about expressing how much I enjoy watching Hunter piss those people off. But this thread asked if we thought Hunter was unfairly criticized for his views and I believe I explained why I think the answer is yes.
  18. I will restate my position in the very first post - "My guess it's an issue he doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about. Hunter did claim his quotes were taken out of context (and the ... in the original article suggests that). He also did an ad for the GOP governor in the AK election which is brought up a lot but the part that's often ignored is how little SSM was an issue. The democratic nominee openly opposed SSM and voted against LGBT issues while he was in the House. It wasn't an issue there. My thoughts are that his views are more or less common place in baseball and people generally bring them up because they have a different ax to grind with Hunter, usually b/c he's been outspoken on racial issues in ways that are tough for whites to appreciate." I bolded the part that I think is the reason this crap gets brought up so much. You want to equate two sentences used out of context to equate Hunter with Preifer, who used homophobic language for months, joked about killing gays and ugly AIDS jokes. Fine. I can see a big difference both between Hunter and Priefer and your stated motives and what I think your motives really are. But now we're veering toward the moderators banning me again. So I'll just leave it at this - if Hunter were white or if he wasn't outspoken on racial matters, his views on gay rights wouldn't have been brought up nearly as much.
  19. I'm sure they were just as enlightening as this one.
  20. http://deadspin.com/i-was-an-nfl-player-until-i-was-fired-by-two-cowards-an-1493208214 My feeling is that there is a lot more to suggest that Preifer's views are his than there are of Hunter's. You may differ.
  21. Yeah, I just figured it was Mike responding. Didn't realize someone else jumped in.
  22. I don't care much. Some of the articles were good, some not so much. But it didn't really fit into ESPN. Was it much different than something like Deadspin? I'm not sure. That said, the politics behind it's closure seem pretty interesting. Apparently, all the editors that followed Simmons weren't allowed to warn ESPN that they were going to leave which left Grantland in a bit of a pickle.
  23. What are Hunter's very public comments on the issue? As far as I know, it's been two incidents - one commercial for Asa Hutchinson in which he read the GOP talking points (which, on SSM aligned with the Democrat in the race as well as, at the time, those of Hillary Clinton and President Obama - although, to be fair to the President, I can't remember when he evolved on that issue). The other was an article where he said his quotes were taken out of context. I'm not sure that counts as very public. He certainly (to my knowledge) didn't write op-ed pieces on the issues like Matt Birk or been outed as a close minded bigot by former players, like some Viking coaches were.
  24. Well, when I make direct rips, I get banned. I'm all for not liking a guy. Go for it. I hate Aaron Rodgers just because he plays for the Packers. But if you do it because you think he said things that he didn't actually say or you didn't understand the context in which they were said, that's on you. "Faking being black" which you directly quoted to him, for instance. You managed to get the both the words wrong and the context all while trying to make him look bad. And then you doubled down on it and made yourself look worse.
  25. Ramos isn't really a good player anymore. His obp in the NL last year was .258. He has some pop but he's an out machine. Why give up something for that?
