  2. You might be giving them a bit more credit then they are due. The barn burned down, the horse is dead and they just now called the fire department?
  3. Really interesting article on the fight - http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/just-a-bit-outside/story/jonathan-papelbon-bryce-harper-fight-current-ex-players-support-pitcher-long-time-coming-092715 According to the FS writer, most players actually sided with Paps over Harper.
  4. On Paps, I think there are three reasons he doesn't get moved. 1) Rizzo traded for him and can be somewhat stubborn (per the Post) about moves like this. He thinks Paps is part of the team and Storen isn't so ... 2) No team is going to want to trade for Paps 11m salary to go along with his diva attitude - I think his trade value is even lower than when Philly traded him. So the Nats would have to eat much of his salary and get nothing good back in return. 3) Paps closing demands aren't something most teams would want to deal with. The only teams that should trade for him are teams with a shot at the postseason and need a closer and don't care about "chemistry." Not sure there are many of those teams out there. Maybe Houston, since Gregerson seems to be their closer. Anyway, those are the reasons I don't think the Nats can trade Paps. I could be wrong. On the Milone thing, you're not wrong that they have more options but teams need SP depth. Milone isn't a bad option. Maybe he's not a perfect fit.
  5. I'm not sure if Harper has hustling issues. His stat line certainly suggests he doesn't. He might have a prima donna attitude that rubs teammates the wrong way - he certainly wouldn't be the first great player that did that. Maybe his teammates think he's just counting the days until the Yankees give him 400 million (God knows I would). but I don't think he did anything wrong on that play. He popped up and looked disgusted at himself like a hundred players have done without incident - including Mauer, Sano, Dozier and Plouffe. So I'm not sure what Paps was thinking - the two probably just don't like each other seeing as how Harper didn't stand up for Paps a few days ago and Paps will be suspended for throwing at (equal ass-hat) Machado. What I think is interesting, so far, is how few teammates have really gotten into this. You don't see a lot of 'We stand with Harper' comments, which I think is a bit surprising. That's a toxic clubhouse.
  6. Yeah, that would make sense. Milone's been a solid ML pitcher in the AL, under control for a few more years. Storen is out in Washington and Paps is untradeable at this point.
  7. Severino isn't a bad target but I think his upside is much more Drew Butera than Suzuki. He has a sub .300 obp in AA. He's still relatively young and should be in AA or AAA next year so it would make sense for the Twins to target him but not as the centerpiece. If they try and peel away Storen, for example, maybe they get Severino as a throw in by the Nats - something like Gonsalves and our 2nd round supp pick for Storen and Severino (or Reetz who is further away but seems to have better upside). That might be a little overpay on our side so maybe something slightly better in return or less going away. But it's in the neighborhood.
  8. Yeah, I am stunned that Paps was left in the game. Maybe Williams really doesn't like Harper or likes the "fire" that Paps is showing? Or was he just too petrified to do something? I'm not sure. The Nats' blogs are saying that all the players hate the clubhouse atmosphere and a lot of that is laid at Williams feet. I really think a bigger part of managing is controlling the clubhouse and player's egos rather than making a lineup or pitching change.
  9. http://deadspin.com/jonathan-papelbon-and-bryce-harper-brawl-in-nationals-d-1733270056 The gift that keeps on giving, gives some more. I guess this is the opposite side of the 'chemistry matters' coin. Papelbon apparently attacked Bryce Harper (the face of the freaking franchise) for not running out a pop up. It looks like a pretty good tussle, actually. When the Nats traded for Papelbon, the were 1 game ahead of the Mets. Since that trade, which angered their very good closer, Drew Storen who took the demotion very poorly, the Nats have gone 27-29 and fallen out of the playoff race. Nats fans are taking this well - http://www.federalbaseball.com/2015/9/27/9403741/nationals-drop-12-5-decision-to-phillies-jonathan-papelbon-and-bryce-harper-dugout-fight
  10. Nice article, Seth. I think it's pretty clear that Molitor really likes Rosario and that Rosario has a pretty good competitive attitude that has helped him stay on an even keel in the majors. The OBP has to improve - SIckels had a nice piece about Rosario a few weeks back - but I think it will. I think I've been most surprised by his power playing so well up here. That has really been fun to see.
  11. There were rumors that the Twins and Padres were close to a trade at the deadline that would have included Nolasco. You're right that a Nolasco trade would require the Twins to take back someone else's Nolasco.
  12. Fun article. It would be nice to see baseball grow even more. It has a solid foothold in some places - DR, Japan, Venezuela etc but it certainly can grow more.
  13. I do think the Twins will make a few small trades - I think Ryan moves Nolasco. I think we make a play for Drew Storen and we would listen on offers for any of our OFers but I think they go into the season with all of them and don't resign Hunter. If they resign Hunter, they'll probably trade Arcia. If the Nats want to back the truck up for Dozier, I could see him getting moved but I think that's pretty unlikely.
  14. Catching is exceptionally weak though. Only 7 catchers managed a 2 WAR season this year. We could upgrade by signing AJ instead of trading a prospect. (And there isn't much in the minor leagues, either).
  15. If they win the world series, I think Hunter has to make Terry Ryan do a dance. I might actually pay $5 to see that.
  16. Williams OPS during those 84 games - 1.213. He won the MVP that year.
  17. Yeah, Gonsalves for Storen straight up might be pretty close to the Jepsen trade (Storen's a bit better but less team control). I'd probably be ok with that although I don't know what the FA relief pitcher market looks like. That said, I was thinking something more like Storen for our 2nd round pick and a lesser prospect (Jake Reed, maybe).
  18. Federalbaseball, the Nats TwinkieTown equivalent seems to think Storen won't be back - too many bridges burned. I think the price for Storen won't be that high - he has the injury so the Nats won't get to showcase him healthy. A deal somewhat similar to Jepsen might be enough - and the Nats and Twins certainly have been willing to trade before. The Twins also, IIRC, have a tradeable draft pick after the second round, which they could throw in for him.
  19. Pretty confident that the Twins sent scouts to see him in person.
  20. I think it really depends on the class. If you really love a guy and want to spend most of your money on him, fine. And some years it might make more sense to go the quantity route. In any event, over the last several years a lot of prospect guys have said nice things about the Twins in Latin America so it seems like they are doing one or two things right.
  21. Can someone help me remember? 2014 - Huascar Ynoa (now 17 in Dominican league). 2013 - Lewin Diaz (now 18 and in Gulf Coast league). 2012 - Amaurys Minier (now 19 in Appy league). 2011 - ? 2010 - ? I know we singed more than those guys, obviously, but those were the top ranked "big" signings in those years.
  22. Callis tweeted that the Twins signed 6th rounder Paul for 50K so that freed up about 240k.
  23. IIRC, everyone loved Sano but Polanco wasn't a top level signee and Kepler was a bit of a curiosity. I think it's not quite all about money as it is getting the right guys. In any event, I don't know how to link a tweet but Callis and Badler had a fun conversation: Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 20 hours ago Jim Callis retweeted Ben Badler And I remember how @Pirates drafted Tony Sanchez fourth overall to save $ to go all in on Sano. Whoops. Jim Callis added, Ben Badler @BenBadler The same year the Twins international scouts signed Miguel Sano, they also signed Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler. What a monster class.
  24. I don't think so. That was an aging veteran team in Cleveland but still pretty darn good - two HOFers having HOF seasons (Thome and Alomar) and three borderline HOFers (Lofton, CC and Visquel) and a two time MVP having a monster year again (Juan Gone). And the White Sox weren't bad either and were setting up some of the pieces that would eventually get past us and win the WS.
  25. It depends on how people are playing. With Buxton out, I think Rosario is the main CFer, which clears a potential spot for Arcia, if he earns his way up. I don't think Hicks comes up. I think Pelfrey goes to the pen and Duensing is released. I don't think the team will send Meyer down quite yet but he has to start having some better outings.
