  1. He was a 24th round pick out of Appalachian State which, I believe, isn't a great baseball program school but it's ok. His numbers so far are far better than what he put up in college. He's doing very well against younger competition and the Twins seem willing to move him up, which is good. He's probably a lottery ticket but he's a nice one to have.
  2. Both b-r and Cots have him arb eligible after this year and a free agent after the 2019 season. Obviously, if he stays in the minors all this year, that may affect those numbers.
  3. Keep in mind that Zunino is hitting in the PCL. His .891 OPS is solid but it's 9th among catchers in the PCL (and behind our old friend Josmil Pinto). It isn't even in the top 40 if you count all hitters. He's 25 and his strike out problem hasn't gone away. He also enters his arbitration years next year and only has three years of control left at the end of the year. The M's would trade him for Kepler in a heart beat. We'd be foolish to do so.
  4. Nice start by Gonsalves. It doesn't mean much but with all the promotions, mlbpipeline updates its top 100 prospects and Gonsalves is now #98. Of course, that doesn't include recent draftees and it doesn't change the order for those above/below on how they've played but it is still nice to see.
  5. Sure, but the offense also pummeled Hamels, Manaea, Nola and Quintana. I do think the offense will certainly have some lows but they won't be the lows we saw in April.
  6. The Twins certainly have the pieces for a very good offensive team. Hopefully, we are starting to see that grow at last.
  7. Yeah, I think Abad is a solid trade chip. Kintzler might not bring back anything. I'm torn on Grossman. He was a top 100 prospect and he's taking really good at bats. I'm sure he's somewhat lucky but unless they get a crazy good deal for him, I'd keep him and let him and Rosario share the LF/4th OF role going forward.
  8. Yeah, it looks like you timed that market really well. That always feels good. I was talking to my wife about that stock because you brought it up. We both are skittish around "technology" stocks b/c we don't feel like we know enough about the industry (as if I know enough about banking or oil, but whatever). So we haven't made many investments in 'tech'. Although we did buy up some Oracle stock in Summer '00.
  9. Mike - If you are looking for a nice dividend stock and want to take advice from some idiot on a baseball message board, I will say that one nice stock we owned was HP, the oil rig company. We bought it in 07 and sold it a couple years ago when we paid off a bunch of my student loans. We tripled our money on that investment and that's not even counting the really nice dividends we got. Oil's been knocked around a bit the last few years but it's starting to come out of it. I think it's priced a bit high - in the 60s - but if it slips into the 50s it's a bargain. IMHO. And the dividend approaches 5%. Since it's an oil rig company, it rises and falls with oil demand but the price will eventually get over 100 again.
  10. Barring a huge turn around, the final record will be a disappointment. Whether it's 70-92 or 60-102 the season was not good. However, I still think the biggest problems for this team were coaching related, not organizational talent. So I think most of the ire should go to Molitor and the staff although the players themselves shouldn't get a free pass, either. Since I'm one of the few who thought everything up until this year was going pretty much as I thought it would, I'm more in Ryan's camp. But I really want Molitor gone. That said, the comments from the Pohlad family seem to suggest the opposite is more likely.
  11. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v919019283/laabal-escobar-gets-tossed-in-the-bottom-of-the-7th Yunal Escobar got tossed for drawing in the dirt. He was drawing where the Short Stop usually stands. He was tossed by the home plate umpire. You can see his 'drawing' at about 1:25 of the above link.
  12. Well, we'll see. Despite the record, the team does have the pieces already in place for a pretty solid offense and we're starting to see some of it come together. The pitching is still suspect but hopefully Berrios is up soon. So, I'll vote for 38 and hope for a lot more.
  13. About a third of those games are as a defensive replacement. He's only started 50 games. They pretty clearly see him as a 4th OF type. I imagine both the Twins and Yankees are disappointed in how the trade has turned out so far.
  14. I can't really comment on this but I'll link the ACLU MN's statement, which includes a letter to the DOJ. https://www.aclu-mn.org/news/2016/07/07/aclu-statement-philando-castile-killing
  15. Ford has a great dividend but I'd stay away. I just don't trust it much over the longterm. I know it's improved but it always seem the last to the party on improving its cars. I might make a small investment in it but certainly not a big one. I think there are safer buys.
  16. Yeah, obviously, SSS and all but he seems to do a bit of everything. I'm a bit surprised that the metrics don't like him defensively but it's still SSS. Solid player.
  17. I'm not a smart enough investor to know a lot about foreign markets but I'm sure there is money to be made there (and lost there). The only big foreign gamble we took was a 10k buy of TTM - a car company from India - about 10 years ago. It's annual gain is just under 10% for that period so it was a good investment but I bought it simply because an Indian friend of mine suggested it. We've kicked the tires of some other stocks and funds but never pulled the trigger. Mike's Mexico stock would have been a nice buy. I think if you did go there a fund like EWZ would be the best bet.
  18. Bit of both. We have an investment account with one of the big banks so we can get free reports on all sorts of stocks and have a guy there to talk about possible investments but he never initiates anything. It's usually us saying "is X good" and him usually giving us paperwork to decide for ourselves. Generally, we like dividend stocks but we're not that diverse. We tend to invest in 'safe' stocks - big banks, John Deere, index funds - but will occasionally make a 10% bet on a lesser stock. Mike's advice is pretty solid. My wife and I both max our 401k/pension accounts and put a crap load of our paychecks into two different savings accounts - a short term one for vacations/new car etc and the longterm investment account. I also think it makes sense to put some money in a 529 for your child's college if you can afford it but others disagree. In the investment account, a solid portion should be an index fund - ours is a vanguard fund that tracks the S&P 500. The general rule is your age should be X percent in index funds so if you are 30 and have 100k hidden away, 30K should be in index funds. But we have about 7 or 8 stocks we've held for years. When we buy stocks, we tend to hold them longterm. Generally that works but it did mean we got killed in 08 with the bank stocks. We had a lot of citi and wachovia. -sigh-
  19. Wow. 20 pages.
  20. Wow, so basically the entire A+ rotation is now in AA? Pretty good season for those young men. I assume Jay will put in the pen on an innings thing? Also, very good news on Palka. Hope he turns into something.
  21. Well, BA's tracker has the Twins with five guys - Wander Valdez, 3b, Dominican Republic, $495,000. Jesus Feliz, ss, Dominican Republic. $260,000. Stamy Gabriel Urena, ss, Dominican Republic. $130,000. Francisco Martinez, of, Dominican Republic Prelander Berroa, rhp, Dominican Republic Read more at http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/team-team-international-signing-tracker/#5jBQbeSk53HZuKcd.99 If the last two got around the same amount as Urena, they've probably already spent about a 1.15m. Looks like it might be a quantity year. Grab a bunch of guys and hope some develop type thing. I know so little about the group that I'll be happy so long as they spend all their money.
  22. from mlbtraderumors today: "Potential trade candidate Ervin Santana tossed a complete-game shutout yesterday for the Twins, limiting the Athletics to two hits without a walk while tossing just 100 pitches. Santana dropped his ERA 44 points in the process and is now sporting a 1.63 ERA over his past four starts. Obviously, a nice four-start stretch isn’t going to undo all of the damage Santana did to his trade stock with a rocky start to the season, but 93 innings with a 4.06 ERA, 6.6 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 and a 42.9 percent ground-ball rate looks rather solid on the whole. He has about $6.5MM remaining on his salary in 2016 and is owed $13.5MM in each of the next two seasons, plus a $1MM buyout of a 2019 option. He’s not a cheap option, but given how few starters will be on the open market this winter, adding a durable mid-rotation cog could make sense for a number of contenders this summer."
