  1. In part because of the very limited FA starting pitching pool, Ervin Santana has more interest than i would have thought. This is mostly from Nick Cafardo at the Boston Globe so ... http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/cafardos-latest-valencia-royals-liriano-melancon-santana.html and http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2016/06/25/nick-cafardo-hitters-contenders-could-try-acquire-trade-deadline/wrwSVJTiDjNypEsEmCrtWI/story.html From the link: "3. Ervin Santana, RHP, Twins — Santana is seen as perhaps the most viable trade deadline pickup on the market. The veteran can help a team immediately, perhaps not at the front end, but “he’s the one guy out there who could be a sure thing in the middle of the rotation. Teams like Boston, Toronto, Baltimore need that guy,” according to an American League assistant GM. Santana had some rough starts in early June, but on June 19 against the Yankees he went 7⅓ innings and allowed just two earned runs, looking more like himself. Santana is making Clay Buchholz money, $13.5 million a year through 2018." The article also has notes on Nunez, Plouffe and even Mauer.
  2. I have read a few economic arguments for leaving the EU being better for Britain (although most argue the otherway) but the entire debate seemed to be anti-immigrant, which really, really rubs me the wrong way.
  3. Sure, those would be good guys to trade. Perhaps people aren't clamoring for big trades.
  4. Hey, if you want to bitch about losing a guy who has a .236/.307/.373 85 OPS+, -1WAR line in the majors over the last two years (and a .629 OPS in AAA) and not getting enough in return for him, this is the place. We can 10 pages out of this, easy. But, best of luck to him.
  5. Sure, moving Kepler would potentially weaken the OF - although his defense in RF has looked a lot worse than I expected. But the assumption would be that the Twins team with an OF of Grossman/Buxton/Rosario + Kepler trade chip could be better than Grossman/Buxton/Kepler. Sort of depends on the trade chip. But for those who are complaining that the Twins won't do a big trade, Kepler's your only chip.
  6. I suspect it was the fans who thought the offseason trade of Plouffe would bring back quite the haul.
  7. Well, that seems aimed at me. I'm not advocating for it. I merely stating that he's probably our best realistic trade chip (assuming that Sano/Buxton/Berrios are off limits). The Twins do have some depth in the corners. So for those who clamor that the Twins don't make proactive trades, he's your guy. If the Twins could get back a guy like Profar for Kepler (and something else), that might be worth it, even with the loss of years of control.
  8. That's true. I'm always the low man on Polanco but he's sure been a solid player. I'm not sure how the rest of the league views him A) he isn't in the majors like Kepler (who is the better regarded prospect), B ) questions about where he might play and C) depth behind him in our system. We have a few guys who can play in the corners but Polanco is the only obvious MI we have until Gordon is ready.
  9. Rosario, Grossman, Sano can all be put in corner OF positions. And they have lesser prospects like Harrison and Walker in AA/AAA. I like Kepler a lot but if the Twins want a big trade, he's their chip. Abad and Nunez might get us a nice return but Kepler would be the centerpiece for any large trade. Whether or not we want to that would depend on the return. I'd probably move him if I could get a difference maker back at short or a front of the rotation starter. Not sure if those trades are possible but that's where you'd start.
  10. Actually I suspect Ryan's evaluations are accurate and the fans views are the unrealistic ones.
  11. Of all our possible (realistic) trade chips, Kepler might be our best. He's coming on strong lately and his OPS+ of 105 isn't too bad for a rookie, even with his early struggles. I wonder how other teams view him? He has 6 full years of control and the Twins have a lot of OF depth behind him. Could they package him to the Rangers for Profar? Profar's the better player but only has 3 years of team control left, I believe.
  12. Jeez, that's scary to think about.
  13. With Plouffe's latest injury, I suspect the Mets look elsewhere. I'm not 100% certain what teams need what but it does look like Toronto - in a horse race with Boston and Baltimore - could use a MI and a left handed relief pitcher and the Twins have both of those in Nunez and Abad (their two best trade chips). Toronto's farm system is a bit bare.
  14. Great start by Berrios. Hope he comes up soon. Nice to see Blankenhorn hit that HR - I'm a huge Cabbage fan but Blankenhorn was a real nice pick, too. Should be fun watching these younger bats develop. As for Harrison, I've always been a fan and he's still young but his ceiling still seems limited behind the guys that are ahead of him. If he could put it together, he seems like the kind of guy you kick in on a trade but he has to get it together first.
  15. http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/23/europe/eu-referendum-live-blog/index.html And that's the reason your portfolio is 6% lower this morning. 17 million idiots voted Britain out of the EU. Donald Trump supported the Brexit movement which is pretty much disqualifies him from being President - if all the other **** didn't disqualify him for being President. (Not to be outdone, Clinton has been quite on it while her staff prepares a press release).
  16. Well, a very sizeable chunk of readers don't agree with you. He's already stated that he thinks there might be two more books (after TWOW). So I think the next book will introduce several new characters and locations - including Willis Tyrell, Oldtown, the Stormlands. I imagine the Dornish sections will be large with chapters focusing on Arianne and "Aegon." And it looks like the Greyjoys are playing a bigger part than the books had previously suggested. My guess is that TWOW ends with the wall falling when someone blows the horn of winter, which should be fun.
  17. Dozier will stay put but I think the FO will try and move Plouffe and Suzuki. And it's a good thing when your players play well.
  18. Blankenhorn is in Elizabeth and Cabbage is in the GCL. I would have thought the other way around.
  19. While you're in that rat hole, check out the Jojen paste theory, the Eldritch Apocalypse theory and read the new chapter that was released.
  20. When I was first reading the books I figured that he'd end up marrying Arya and link the two great houses. It's kind of fun going over the books and think, "oh, this will happen" just to see, "ohhh, nope." Usually followed by "oh, that dude is dead."
  21. He's (almost certainly) a Blackfyre, not a Targaryian and he'll probably take over King's Landing before Dany gets there (the prophecy of the mummer's dragon being cheered by a crowd). The only reason I have doubts is b/c Varys told Keven his origin and, since Keven was going to be killed, it made no sense to lie. So, maybe his is Aegon or maybe Varys doesn't know - although I'm not sure how that would work.
  22. Well, the show combined Edric Storm and Gendry. In the book Gendry is at the inn near the trident protecting other orphans and Edric Storm was sent to the free cities. On TV, Gendry was given that storyline.
  23. What, you don't believe the internet rumors that he's alive and it was the tattered prince on the death bed?
  24. Technically, I'm not sure Hardhome has happened fully in the books yet - we know the others have killed many rangers but I think the full extent of Hardhome is supposed to be in the next book. But even without "seeing" it, we do (or will) get to see the POV characters reactions to it. That's been pretty standard through out the books - we don't usually get an omnipotent POV, we just know what the POV characters know. We know that the others are killing rangers b/c the very first chapter showed it and it's been a continuing thing. The author doesn't need to show us the battles since we know the results. So the books have shown us that there is a very dangerous enemy north of the wall but hasn't shown us much about them, which is certainly a different way to tell the story but I think is fairly effective. Hardhome was certainly very good TV.
  25. I'm not sure if there will be an ice dragon but I don't think Dany's three dragons will be the only dragons in the books. The books have hinted that other dragons are buried in stone. Other dragon eggs have been mentioned. And the books have also mentioned other monsters - krakens, sphinxes, griffins, unicorns and merfolk. Obviously, some of those references are to houses, not the monster, but some may be. In any event, I think the others will meet Drogon in a battle but they'll have to have something to even it out a bit - maybe magic?
