  1. Did the Twins trade Santana in that equation?
  2. Sure. They could have done that but we've played that game here every single offseason and you don't know what you'll get either. Pat Neshek had superficially good numbers for the Astros but a .3 WAR. Many here didn't want Luke Gregerson who didn't sign with us b/c he wanted to close. And this offseason we were up in arms about not giving Tony Sipp 18m. A lot of teams make in-season trades to improve their rosters and it's not because all those GMs are incompetent. It's because seasons go in unanticipated directions. The A's sold their system for a couple mediocre starters a few years back and it blew up on them spectacularly. We gave up Hu. If giving up Hu is a stumbling block for you, you can't really complain about the team not trading prospects.
  3. http://m.reds.mlb.com/cin/video/v871756283/chccin-hamilton-exits-the-game-with-apparent-injury It looks like the LFer shielded the ball from Hamilton who then got struck right in the face by the ball. Rizzo got an inside the park home run. Hamilton was taken out of the game and will be checked for a concussion.
  4. Sure, they had down games in August but they were a lot better in Aug/Sept then before. They had something around a 3.80era in 213ip in those months compared to 4.25era in 147ip in June/July. And "too little, too late" is a bit disingenuous since they were in the WC lead for part of Aug/Sept (after falling below .500). The pen wasn't the reason they didn't make it.
  5. Yeah, it doesn't seem like the Twins are going to go over their slot (cheap Pohlads). And I haven't seen anything - fangraphs, mlb.com, BA - that links the Twins to any of the big international prospects this year. Could be a boring signing period for us.
  6. Yeah, I'd stretch him out and let him give starting another shot. No harm in that.
  7. It's based on what the external prospect reviews of the players said. mlb.com, Klaw, BA, fangraphs, BP etc.
  8. Because they are all not the same. Coming into the season, we had 4 pitchers whose stuff could be front of the rotation starters (five if you count Thorpe) - Meyer, Stewart, Jay and Berrios. They had a couple other starters who could be in the middle - like Gonsalves - and a few more back of the rotation types like Jorge. Hu would fit into that last group.
  9. Sure but performance in AA shouldn't out weigh your internal analysis of what the player will become. We don't know how the Twins view those pitchers but pretty much all external rankings had Hu as the lowest pitcher, despite his (at the time) more impressive numbers. I think a lot of Hu's charm was a way to attack Stewart, who wasn't putting up those numbers and proof that the Twins blew that pick. That Hu was so lowly regarded and Stewart was not bothered a group of people.
  10. And that's why you don't scout stat lines.
  11. They didn't need 2+ arms. They bullpen in Aug/Sept was a strength. They didn't miss the playoffs by a few games because they didn't add a second bullpen piece. They just weren't quite good enough overall. Nothing wrong with that.
  12. Good grief. Jepsen wasn't a proven closer and Hu was our 13th best prospect whose stuff still hasn't played up to his stat line. The Ken Giles trade was a dumb trade. 5 prospects for a closer, including multiple top 100 guys.
  13. Nice start by Berrios. Good to see. I would imagine he'll be up after the all-star break or about two weeks.
  14. It's interesting. When I was reading the books, I was telling my brother how great they were and I was talking about Arya. And after I told him about the guys she's killed/had killed, he looks at me and says, "you know she's become evil, right?" And I was like, "NO! She's the best!" But he has a point. She's a POV character but she really isn't a nice guy anymore. Still the best character in the books though.
  15. I think this is the definitive website. The authors helped write Martin write the World of Ice and Fire and the wiki is part of the westeros.org list of cites. http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Years_after_Aegon%27s_Conquest#Year_299_After_the_Conquest
  16. In the books, the first season starts near the end of 298 AC and only about a year and a half of time has happened. The books are currently in the middle of 300 AC. I assume the TV show is on roughly the same timeline.
  17. I don't think Cercei has any legal claim to the throne - certainly nothing in the books which repeatedly say that a woman can not rule. But she has the King's guard, the Lannister forces and no one to (openly) oppose her. That's an usurper.
  18. Cercei will be killed by her younger brother - Jaime. As for Dorne, I've actively enjoyed the Dorne stuff in the books but the show has been just horrible for it. I think it's pretty clear the show runners didn't know what to do with it after it caught up with the books.
  19. Yeah, Cafardo is not the best source and Santana type trades are rare. The reason I created the thread in the first place was that I was surprised their were rumors about Santana and the quote from the unnamed assistant GM. I'd still bet against the Twins trading him and I don't think we should trade him to just get out from his contract, but it'll be fun if we just had another chip for the trade deadline b/c not a lot of good has happened this season.
  20. I forgot to mention but the best part of the episode was how the show's theme music played (slowly at first) when the Northerners made Jon king in the north. That music is awesome.
  21. Shouldn't have said deals, should have said types. All of these guys were more or less league avg pitchers at the time, with varying strengths (innings v. rate stats) and weaknesses (health, rate stats). All were seen as middle or back end starters. Lackey was probably the best and McCarthy the worst. Part of Santana's appeal - per the OP - was that he was under contract for next year, which isn't always what deadline deals look for. Depending on the team, that can be seen as a bonus or a negative. But the implication by Cafardo is that it is a good thing.
  22. Yeah, if they get a Kazmir type deal for Santana, they should take it. I still think Nolasco might have some value to a NL team for the same reason Santana does - not a horrible contract combined with a horrible FA year. And his stuff would play better in the NL. But if they can't move him and can move Santana, then they should do it anyway. And the Twins would use Nolasco in the rotation next year. As for Hughes, I think he's close to done as a starter at this point. They shouldn't rely/expect much from him going forward.
  23. That's sort of where I stand. Unless someone gives them a really good offer - and they should listen - there really is no reason to move Santana just to get out of his contract. He's more or less what they thought he'd be. Looking at similar deals over the last few years - Brandon McCarthy (FA at end of year) for 5th starter/reliever type. Peavy (also FA) for a couple AAA arms. John Lackey (cheap year left) for Joe Kelly and Craig Allen. Kazmir for two solid helium prospects. The Kazmir return is pretty good, actually but I think there was a pretty strong demand for pitching and few capable starters that year, which upped his price. Hopefully that happens here.
  24. Yeah, the South is pretty much destroyed and if the Martells and Tyrells are teaming up with Dany, Cercei is SOL. And Jaime didn't look pleased at all. 1) I don't think Bran let the Night's King pass - the wall will have to come down (it will). Probably in the last episode of next season. I'm pretty sure Bran will warg into a dragon at some point. 2) I have no idea what they are doing with Arya. Her killing Walder Frey was fun but sort of out of the blue. I've stopped guessing on her character arc. 3) I figure Littlefinger kills off sweetrobin and somehow becomes Head of House Arryn (isn't that his plan in the books?). Maybe he offers to marry Cercei in exchange for the Vale's forces against Dany? 4) No idea. Absolutely none. 5) He probably has a big role to play next season but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe he hits her on the water and sinks a bunch of her Dorthraki warriors so she's not completely unbeatable?
  25. Well, that was a surprisingly fun finale. Cercei sitting on the Iron Throne, Arya killing Walder Frey (and baking pies), North uniting and Dany heading to Westeros. Pretty darn good.
