  1. I think it would be a bad idea. You're punting a year of service time away in your system and there is no guarantee that the players you get next year would be better. That year of development time is big.
  2. Nice write up, Seth. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Cabbage plays this year. The early videos Bob posted showed a bigger guy with a nice swing. It would be really nice if the Twins got a steal with him.
  3. I think it depends on the price. Sure, he's a hot head but I'm not at all worried about a player getting hurt as payback for Ventura. That simply doesn't happen. I'm more worried about his stats falling off and I'm not sure he can start 30 games a year for several years. But his stuff looks nice and is worth taking a gamble on. But I don't know what would be a good fit for KC. With Moose hurt, Plouffe would fit but Plouffe is really struggling and would be about a 6m payroll increase for them, so I don't think that works. I wouldn't trade Kepler for him. Not sure what it would take.
  4. I think I would (but I think some other team nabs him). He doesn't have a lot of leverage - he's a poor kid from PR, apparently, and has no college commitment so he'll sign. I'm sure his adviser is working the phones to get something worked out for him with (probably) the Reds, who were linked to him prior to the drug test result. They could take him at 35 or 43.
  5. According to mlbtraderumors, the 25 year old might be on the trading block. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/royals-have-recently-offered-yordano-ventura-in-trades.html He has a nice contract but he's underperforming this year and his anger issues - he started another brawl last night with Machado (this has been a great year for baseball brawls) so KC might look to move him. No idea what they'd want back. From the article: "The extension once seemed an asset, but now may no longer have surplus value. Though we’re now one and a half years into the contract, the vast majority of the guarantee remains to be paid. Ventura has received just over $1MM of what he’s owed so far, with an escalating structure that mimics the arbitration process still to come. And there’s no doubt that other organizations will have concerns about Ventura’s questionable reputation and on-field antics. It’s not exactly clear what Kansas City would be looking to accomplish via trade. Contenders would certainly hesitate to add Ventura to a rotation, and it’s a big commitment even if a club hoped to utilize his live arm in the pen. A swap that would allow the Royals to fill a need at the major league level without adding payroll could make some sense, though that’s just generalized speculation on my part."
  6. BA has their latest mock up - http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/mock-draft-5-0/#07JoHtu2CgXq5bds.97 Delvin Perez, a top 10 prospect from Puerto Rico, is not in their first round. He failed a drug test for using a performance enhancing drug. No idea how this affects his draft spot. It has the Twins taking (my personal choice) Dakota Hudson - "Minnesota likely is Dunn’s floor, as they would be in on a fast-moving college starter if there were one. Minnesota here may go with the best player on its board, regardless of genre, and that could still be Hudson, who slid a bit late. PICK: Dakota Hudson, rhp."
  7. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/twins-rookie-byron-buxton-finally-starting-to-live-up-to-the-hype-074300502.html Nice article on yahoo today. I found this interesting: "There was one person in particular who helped him while he was back in the minors. That was ex-Twins All-Star Torii Hunter. They met last season, as Hunter finished his career in Minnesota. When Buxton was in Triple-A, he talked to Hunter regularly. Hunter would watch Buxton’s games, tell him what he was doing wrong and what he should be doing instead. If those adjustments didn’t work, the two of them would get back on the phone and hash out new ideas." I'm firmly in the corner that last years success had a lot more to do with Hunter than Molitor.
  8. Some more interesting draft rumors: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/182564040/draft-buzz-what-callis-and-mayo-are-hearing?topicid=167757330 1) Jason Groome is no longer going to Vanderbilt but rather a junior college making him eligible for next years draft if he doesn't like how this draft goes. He wants 4m or more. 2) Atlanta might save money at #3 by picking someone like Ian Anderson 3) Dunn is rising and might be off the board before the Twins pick.
  9. I'm not arguing against him. I imagine that the Twins will call him up soon. I also imagine that they are working with him on control b/c his stuff seems pretty good.
  10. Blankenhorn at second? That's strange. It would be interesting if he could play it since his bat is supposed to profile a lot better than a second baseman's bat.
  11. I know he has options available but I thought there was something in the CBA that limited when you could send a player down, even if he has options - it was a close call on Jessie Crain a few years back and was a reason the Yankees couldn't send down Giambi. I can't remember the rule but I thought he kicked in in year 5. So I'm not sure they could send him to the minors.
  12. Yeah, that was great. Hopefully he's back in the majors - to stay - soon.
  13. Another nice write-up. I won't hate this pick - frankly, the Twins might be better at developing HS OFers than pitchers. But he's not my favorite guy on the board. I suppose it depends on who is available.
  14. Not sure where else to put this but Callis did a re-draft of the 2011 draft. This draft was somewhat famous b/c 1) it was supposed to be loaded 2) the Rays had 10 picks in the first round, a draft record. They kind of screwed it up. Twins didn't do much better - they picked Michael, Boyd and Harrison. Boyd's out of baseball and the other two are in AA. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/182532366/fernandez-a-pirate-redrafting-the-2011-picks It's interesting to see some of the big busts - Bubba Starling - and a reminder that some pretty good players slip.
  15. Well, yeah. Dance and Rigg had some of the best scenes together (I also loved the Varys/Littlefinger talks). But it's just so jarring to watch that it distracts me to the point of complaint. But in fairness to the show, the general casting has been remarkable for what is really just (at the end of the day) a silly show about dragons and killing people. Dance, Rigg, Bean, Glen, Pryce, Headey, Dinklage, etc have been spot on perfect. Margeary is one of the few casting choices that just didn't work (IMHO - others obviously like her).
  16. Well, the FA market - esp for starting pitchers - is really, really bad so that doesn't really matter anyway. Their payroll will remain roughly the same. Hughes gets a 4m raise but Jepsen and his 5+m salary are gone. Plouffe is due a big raise but I think he gets traded. So, even with the other arb raises, the payroll will be a bit lower than this year.
  17. I guess I'll join the chorus of not really getting it either. I think it might help Jepsen mentally to be put into less stressful situations and let him build his stuff back. And the Twins have no reason to not trade Abad at the deadline so letting him get a few more appearances (and, hopefully looking good) would increase his trade value. I'm just not a big fan of Molitor or this coaching staff.
  18. Yeah, he could be an interesting pick. From mlbpipeline: "Lauer has four effective pitches and mixes them well. His best offerings are a low-90s fastball that reaches 94 mph and features some cutting action and nice downhill plane, and a solid 78-83 mph slider. Lauer also possesses a mid-70s curveball and a changeup with some sink and fade Lauer's athletic, effortless delivery allows him to repeat his mechanics and throw quality strikes. While he doesn't have a true out pitch or a lofty ceiling, he may have a higher floor than any left-hander in the 2016 Draft. Lauer projects as a mid-rotation starter."
  19. I'm a big fan of Hudson's so I'd be very happy with him at 15. So, my understanding is that the Twins could go 5% over budget (just over 407k) so, if they signed everyone for slot, they could give #15 a grand total of just under 3.25m (or spread it around a bit more).
  20. Oliver is (IMHO) better than Stewart and Colbert were at their peaks. http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/06/technology/john-oliver-medical-debt/index.html
  21. It's not quite that simple. You aren't just adding to this years payroll. You're adding to each subsequent years' payroll as well - which is why lower revenue teams can't always compete in FA with bigger revenue clubs. Big payroll markets can wash away the contract and pretend it doens't affect their payroll. Small markets can't.
  22. Yeah, I'm sure the Twins could move him if they paid a substantial part of his salary. Not sure the Padres got much in that trade - a journeyman starter and a 16 year old lottery ticket? I'm honestly not sure what teams will be looking for help at third. But I do think he will be traded.
  23. Yeah, I'm not quite sure how she survived that. It looked like the first slash gut her pretty good and then she got stabbed three or four more times in the stomach and thrown off a 20 foot bridge. I know she's tough but the Mountain would have been like, "wait, time out. Let me catch my breath." I assume now that Arya is going to stay in Braavos and take out the faceless men but I've been so wrong on her storyline I should probably stop guessing.
