    So last year the Orioles moved Gausman and O'Day for four prospects from Atlanta, only two of them were in the top 30 of their system, the highest peaking at 15. At the time of the trade, Gausman had a 4.43 era (94 ERA+) in 121 innings and about 2 WAR of value. He had one less year of control than Bundy. A package built around Baddoo and Rortvedt would have been a better package than the one that they got. Last year, before he rolled his ankle, Bundy had, in 16 starts, a 3.75 era in 96 innings. I don't know the ERA+ or WAR value of that at the time but he was a better pitcher than Gausman. He was giving up fewer hits than innings pitched, walking few and striking out a ton of guys. After he came back from the DL, he was a different pitcher and it destroyed his season stats (101 hits in 75 innings. 7.60 era in that span although it also had an insane .350 babip). The rumor is that the Orioles new FO wants to see Bundy re-establish his value before moving him. They'll want a deal better than the Gausman deal, ideally hoping he puts up a Cy Young caliber first half of the year and gets a bidding war going. But if the Twins were aggressive now and were willing to put a deal together around something like Graterol and Baddoo or Gonsalves or Thorpe and Javier or such, I'm not sure Baltimore's new FO wouldn't take it now. But it would be a risk. If the Bundy from the second half is all that's left, that's a huge blunder by us.

    I'd like the Twins to kick the tires on Dylan Bundy. Baltimore is in complete rebuild and Bundy will be 26 next year. His k/bb numbers actually improved over 2017 when he was basically a 3 WAR pitcher. His numbers were bad last year but seem due to a lot of hits that probably shouldn't have happened - he had a .318 babip - and his HR numbers spiked. Get him out of the AL East and a better OF defense and he could be a solid, cost controlled arm with upside.

    We needed a DH and we got one of the best bats available. I'm sure we'll still sign a pitcher or two but the rotation is probably set - Berrios, Gibson, Pineda, Odorizzi and Mejia are probably our starting rotation in April. The pen will get some additions.

    Cruz was my #2 pick for this team (after Machado) and really glad we got him. He's an absolutely perfect fit both for the lineup and for the locker room. His RH power should play up at TF (he's crushed the ball at TF, with a career .667 slg, second best park for him of any park he's played 10 games or more in).

    Depends on the issue. Bluntly, Roberts has been the worst thing for minority voting rights in this country since the Jim Crow south.

    I like Duran but really he's a long way away. This year will be good for us all getting a handle on him. The change from coming to our org could be many things but it's a good sign that he was able to control the walks. He looks like a guy who could be rushed a bit. I would assume he starts in Cedar Rapids but it would be nice if they moved him straight to A+.

    I think we route them. The defense sacked Stafford 10 times last game, they just got knocked out of the playoffs, we have an offense that is trying to prove to itself that it's good. This is a perfect game for us. I think it'll be something like 34-10.

    Nolasco and Santana? I think we traded Nolasco and, either way, those were the going rates for those arms. Nolasco, Santana, Garza, Jiminez, McCarthy etc weren't going to sign for 2 years in those markets. Twins either had to pay fair value or not sign those free agents.

    I've tried to find how many trades teams make but I can't find a link. Thematically, I think you're probably right that the Twins don't make as many trades as other teams but I would be surprised if they were actually last (although it could depend on the time-span we're looking at). Teams with more resources - Red Sox, Yankees - can make more trades b/c they have more pieces to trade and the Twins were in that ugly rebuild where they didn't have any true studs to move, like the Shark or Stanton. If Morneau didn't have a concussion, maybe he's a better trade chip. The Twins really only had three potential blue trade chips - Span, Dozier and maybe Perkins - over those years. But I'm not sure if it's just the small number of trades that's the problem. Obviously, that's part of the problem since with more opportunities, we might get a diamond in the rough (Escobar). But part of it has to be that other teams are more aware now of the importance of prospects. One year of Eric Milton - coming off an injury, IIRC - netted Punto and Carlos Silva? That trade was horrendous for Philly and there's no way that trade happens today (1.4 WAR for one season of Milton v. 14.5 WAR for those two before FA) or the AJ trade (0.3 WAR v 27 WAR from Boof, Nathan and Liriano). It might be impossible for the Twins to build a team like the 04 Twins again where they got nearly 25 WAR from trades. Or 06 where trades netted them 26 WAR. We'll see what happens with the trades from 17 and 18.

    I like Rooker and strike outs are becoming a much more accepted part of the game. I'm worried that he's going to be an all-or-nothing type player - hitting something like .230/.290/.480. Essentially Daniel Palka last year. That's not a horrible player - Palka's bat was roughly a 2 WAR bat over a fullseason but his defense was horrible. But I hope Rooker is better than that.

    This team isn't going to do much in the playoffs. I'm not convinced our defense can play outstanding on the road - they've given up a touchdown more on the road than at home - and our OL is bad. This team isn't going to rattle off three straight road wins in the playoffs. They have a puncher's chance in any/every game but they're probably one and done. I still think they are close to getting back to the championship and/or super bowl but they need to fix the OL badly. Until then, they're not real contenders.

    I think this is the best case scenario for Dems though. She's already shown she can lose a statewide contest.

    One last thing. I compared the 2017 Twins on the same basis - Trade - 1.3 (4%) FA - 8.2 (24%) Draft - 17.8 (52%) Int sign - 6.7 (20%) Draft and int signings were again pretty similar but about 5 WAR better in 2017. FA was better mostly b/c of Santana's huge year and again not a lot of WAR contributed from trades. That's only two years of data of course but the amateur talent acquisition through international signings has looked good, really. Amateur talent (draft + inter. signings) 2017 Astros - 31.2 2017 Twins - 24.5 2018 Red Sox - 23.3 2018 Twins - 20 2016 Cubs - 16

    That's true. Betts accounted for more than half of the Red Sox drafted WAR. But that was more work than I was willing to do.

    I wasn't sure if % and/or production alone was better so I included both. I did find it interesting that the FA % for all teams was about the same although that's probably more coincidence than anything else.
