Rumor: Will the St Louis Cardinals Trade Nolan Arenado?

Goldschmidt. Easy call. -
Where Do the Twins Go from Here
USAFChief replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great question. Per BBRef (the greatest website since at least the mid 1800s) 2023 to date: -4 2022: -4 2021: +2 2020: even* 2019: +4 * 60 games, lack of spring tng, bastardized schedules, players opting out etc. tend to ignore 2020 when evaluating history. YMMV All of that adds up to -2, with ~45% of 2023 remaining. Not sure there's much there.- 65 replies

Joey Gallo Shatters Failure Narratives
USAFChief replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed, with regard to the Twins. I'm the huckleberry who spent all winter complaining about the lack of hitters in their lineup. The larger issue though, is the theory put forth by some that "k's are just like any other out." I do not concur with that theory. I believe Ks are a problem in and of themselves. Just as I believe Ks are a good thing, in and of themselves, for pitchers. -

I don't agree with this at all. Sure, Nobody goes up to the plate looking to K. But clearly someone, somewhere has decided there's not enough downside to K's to discourage them, either. Swing hard, damn the situation, damn the count. And I don't think that's a good way to play offense. Of course we look at outcomes when considering process. Why wouldn't we? Joey Gallo has 3 career sac flies. That's because he Ks too much. -
If Gray's season stats are going to regress why is anyone giving value in a trade? And I'd be pretty good with Gray for the rest of 2023 and a 1 yr, $20m contract for 2024, if he accepts the QO. I'd say there's a high likelihood that's worth more than the prospect(s) you get in return, while throwing Varland, Kuechel or worse into 2023's rotation.

Rumor: Will the St Louis Cardinals Trade Nolan Arenado?
USAFChief replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Off topic, but can someone find this quote from his agent? Not saying it's not out there, but I can't find it. I do remember the TWINS saying Lewis would be playing 3rd in his rehab, which seemed to be a reaction to Miranda's struggles more than anything. -
Lotta faith in a guy who hasn't gotten MLB hitters out for 2 years now, based on a handful of innings in St Paul and an offseason working out.

Wait, what? I can't see a trade for Goldschmidt happening, but...he is exactly the type of hitter we DON'T have in the lineup.

No need to apologize. I just disagree. It's pretty straightforward to me. Get better. And it doesn't seem to me complicated.

Is Popkins Next Firing in MLB Coaches Mid-Season
USAFChief replied to Dave Borton's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Every hitter everywhere, since ancient Egypt, looks to hit mistakes. That's not an offensive breakthrough. I don't think there's much similarity between current hitting philosophy and 2019. Your mileage may differ. The evidence isn't with you, though. -
Is Popkins Next Firing in MLB Coaches Mid-Season
USAFChief replied to Dave Borton's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
1. I specifically said I don't know if Rowson is any kind of answer. His teams haven't been good since leaving. But 2. Nicksaviking (and wabene) specifically mentioned the 2019 Twins as an example of "the same" offense philosophy as 2023. That's demonstrably wrong. The 2019 Twins did NOT sacrifice Ks for power. They surely had better hitters. But, that teams philosophy was NOT the same as 2023. Or at least they didn't rack up Ks at an astounding rate in search of power. And I'd sure as heck prefer to give Rowson another shot compared to the current disaster. -

Maybe you SHOULD look up the stats I don't know whether Rowson is any kind of answer, but it's wrong to claim he coached the 2019 team to the same offensive philosophy as the 2023 Twins. Or at least wrong to imply they had similar results. The 2019 Twins under Popson had a team OPS of .832 with a team SLG of .495. And Were the 6th lowest in MLB with a K rate of 20.5%. That's correct...only 5 teams K'd less than our 300 HR Twins. That team actually DID hit for a ton of power, and didn't rack up a ton of K's doing so. BTW that 2019 team hit .270. As a team. That seems like an impossible dream just 4 years later, but it's true...you could look it up. The 2023 team doesn't actually hit for a lot of power, but geez-oh-man they sure K like they're trying. And do they even HAVE anyone hitting. 270? ;) https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=np&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=1&season=2019&month=13&season1=2019&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2019-01-01&enddate=2019-12-31&sort=4,d https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2019.shtml I don't think @nicksaviking looked up the stats either. -
1. Goldschmidt was an example. It could be somebody(s) else. There's basically nobody anyone should worry about replacing or moving. It's as straightforward as straightforward can be. 2. But If you want to talk Goldschmidt specifically, ok. He's at .284/.369/.475 for the year. With a LONG history of stellar production, including a .981 OPS in 650 PAs as recently as last year. He's 35, so maybe that's his last great year, but he's without question better today than any current Twin. It's not even close, and he's likely to be so for another year at least. 3. Nobody said he would "fix" this offense. I was addressing the OP's point that it wouldn't be "straightforward" to improve the offense. Well, yeah, it would. Get better hitters. That'll improve the offense, and except for SS and perhaps 2b it's pretty straightforward to put a new guy in and drop or shift the incumbent. It couldn't be MORE straightforward. Who are we worried about losing playing time? Joey Gallo? 4. If you don't think swapping out Goldschmidt for Kepler, for example, is a straightforward way to improve the offense, then I don't know what to tell you. Or the OP author. 5. Goldschmidt specifically is a pipe dream anyway. I doubt StL trades him and if so, it won't be to the Twins. Again, he's an example of how perfectly straightforward it would be to improve the offense.

Joey Gallo Shatters Failure Narratives
USAFChief replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Concur. It's hard for me to understand someone making that argument. And to top it off, most of the same people consider Ks the holy grail of pitching. -
Actually, it's really very straightforward. There is nothing complicated, for example, by putting a Paul Goldschmidt at 1b. Nothing. It's a no brainer. You move Kirilloff somewhere in the OF. Done. You don't even need to give that 1 second of thought. What are we worried about...Gallo? Kepler? The Twins are giving regular playing time to Donovan Solano, MAT, Joey Gallo, Max Kepler. Willi Castro. Kyle Farmer. Hell, we've recently seen Solano hitting 4th. There's AMPLE opportunity to improve the lineup. Easy, low hanging fruit. It's pretty straightforward. Nobody is getting pushed out of anything deserved or showing huge promise. I suppose there'd be some fans clamoring for Trevor Larnach, but he's proven nothing. Earned nothing. He's currently got a lower MLB OPS than Kepler, ferpetesakes.
