  1. The teacher/student relationship is complicated. If the teacher can help the student fix his shortcomings, it will work; if the student's problems are not ones that the teacher is good at fixing, there won't be much improvement. I'd be very interested in seeing a more detailed analysis of *which* pitchers have improved with Johnson and what aspects of his pitching improved, and *which* pitchers did the same or worse under Johnson and what were their weaknesses that Johnson seemingly did not improve.
  2. I guess that the FO perceived a "hair deficit" after Ryan's trim.
  3. Mr. Fisher might be fishing in a different pond soon...
  4. He's gone from the mane man to the main man in the rotation.
  5. I'm getting the video stream just fine on MLB.TV.
  6. Love the Ryan haircut! No more Medusa!
  7. MLB.TV lists the game for both TV and radio. Am I missing something?
  8. Just call it a tie! No reason that we need extra innings anyway.
  9. Are you forgetting that Jake Cave is destined to play >80 games in LF? <Ducks incoming tomatoes>
  10. I hadn't thought about Klippstein in years! Second best reliever on the Twins 1965 pennant-winners!
  11. #4 will always be Bob Allison to me, but I hope Lewis ends up getting it retired!
  12. How soon do we ask "What's wrong with the offense?" 2 runs in 3 games (unless they score in the 9th).
  13. Good to see Sano in midseason form. (Not)
  14. My Gray matter says that we need to get over our Petty concerns.
  15. What does this mean? That you don't know them? Why not say that?
  16. Are the fans who keep the game alive benefiting from those ad dollars? The extra ad between half-innings adds a few feet to the owners' yachts and a few rooms to the star players' mansions, but it certainly doesn't seem to lower ticket prices! On the pitch clock, I remember Jim Kaat in his later years (not for the Twins) quick-pitching on every pitch in order to throw off the hitters' routines. Maybe one of our pitchers whose raw stuff is not quite enough could try that.
  17. It is certainly true that baseball will continue for colleges and minor leagues. But how much of the attraction to these games (from players as well as fans) is based on the existence of the golden prize of major-league baseball? If that were to disappear or be seriously impaired over the long run, what would happen to the minor leagues? Would they disappear or would they morph into a (perhaps less flawed) baseball pyramid with the rot at the top removed?
  18. Last spot is a toss-up between Mauer and Oliva for me. How about increasing the size of the mountain by 25%?
  19. He came to the Twins (along with others) from Texas in a trade for Bert Blyleven in 1976. Interesting that they both ended up as Twins broadcasters 40 years later.
  20. Good stuff. I remember Darwin well. But I believe that the American League went from 154 games to 162 in 1961, when the league enlarged and 154 could not be made to come out even with a symmetric schedule. With 7 opponents, 7 x 22 = 154, but with 9 opponents, 9 x 18 = 162. So his 145 games is a slightly smaller, though still impressive, fraction of the total season.
