Assuming the Twins part ways with Rosario, Odorizzi, Hill and Gonzales, along with the already dropped Bailey, the Twins free up almost $45M from the 2020 payroll. That should be enough for Trevor Bauer and a few other pieces.
This review gives me hope. And that hope is that if Thorpe is "still a commodity other teams would give a shot to," the Twins trade him this off-season for whatever they can get.
If a professional baseball player can't intentionally hit a weak ground ball to a vacant area of the infield, he should be sent to the minors until he perfects that skill. If you want to get rid of shifts, start hitting the ball where six opponents aren't standing.
I can see the point of the previous commenters. Why would anyone want a guy who can get on base when you have a dugout filled with guys that hit .220 and strike out 50% of the time.
Francisco Lindor is a free agent and would solve the SS problem. And he would add a bat that can actually make contact with a pitch. Trade away Sano, Polanco, Kepler. Replace Sano and Kepler with Rooker/Larnach and Kirilloff. And if Lewis looks ready, bring him up to play all the outfield spots as a replacement for whomever needs a rest.
Questions for the off-season: 1. Can Sano be salvaged or is he done? 2. Who to get rid off outright? Gonzales, Astudillo, Adrienza, Avila, Romo, ? 3. Who to trade? Rosario, Thorpe, Smeltzer?? 4. What else? It's officially the off-season......
Bad defense at 1B (lack of foot work cost errors in both games). Good bye Marwin. No bitching about needed an ace for the big games. Maeda and Berrios were great. Remember pitch to contact? How about hit with contact? Put the damn bat on the ball. And bring in the K Box as the umpire. The calls for both teams were horrible. Kiriloff looked like the best hitter we had and it was his first game above AA ball. Pitiful showing by the Twins.
I think that with the way the Yankees (the probable opponent) are hitting right now, our best chance will be with a rotation of Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.
Looking at the pitch chart, I only see two pitches that are clearly outside the zone (and three that may or may not be touching the edge). I don't think this qualifies as "all over the place.". I don't think the umpire was the problem.
I thought the pitch framing last night was about as good as it gets. On every close pitch, Jeffers glove was moving from beyond the strike zone back into the strike zone in a very subtle, fluid motion. I don't know how much this actually fools the umpire, but it sure looked good to me. Great start for Jeffers.
And all these problems are in a sport with built-in social distancing. What the heck are the NHL, NBA, and NFL thinking? Those sports will be walking Petrie dishes for the virus. I love sports but it's time to shut them down until the country gets this under control.
I totally agree. It's a pleasure to watch him work the pitcher until he gets a pitch he likes. During one at bat yesterday, the camera did a closeup of Arraez and you could see him take a look at both the first and third base sides of the field looking for the best spot to hit the ball. That was impressive.
Living in Maine, I haven't seen Stashek pitch much. Color me impressed. Wherever Garver put the target, Stashek put the ball. The only hit was on a pitch thrown exactly where Garver wanted it. Quite a performance by the bullpen.
He should lead off. He can make the opposing pitcher work right from the start. My only problem I had last year with Kepler leading off was the frequency of one pitch/one out. That's not ideal for a leadoff hitter.
My brother sold the Twins their first video system in the early 60's and I contribute to Twins Daily periodically. My brother was 20 years older than me and sort of a father figure. Does that count?
These reviews are interesting to read (especially this year with nothing else happening in the world of sports). However, after reading the redrafting articles and seeing names of so many first round picks that are unknown to me, I am thinking that spending millions on draft picks might be a huge waste of money. Maybe a better approach would be to trade draft picks for AA or AAA players that scouts think highly of?
