And with that homer, his 33rd in 805 career at bats, Der Schlagger remains atop the list in fewest ABs per homer. He's competing with Aaron Altherr, who is at 25 in 642. He moved ahead with the blast last night.

    Der Schlagger!

Now, if a newspaper reporter had been happening buy and thought the coverage of the incident was worthy entering Columbia's journalism contest, that would have been a pullet surprise!

I'm thinking there may be a rule that addresses this, but I don't recall the specifics. If I'm not mistaken, the rule came about when Earl Weaver did something like list the previous day's SP in the DH slot so that he could wait to make his decision on who to DH based on the game situation when that slot in the order came up. And maybe it's a DH-specific rule.

And realistically, since Sept. 1 is two weeks from today, most activations are pretty much for the duration.

Great article again, as always... Stew said: "The inning has to be reconstructed based on what follows, even if logic dictates that the inning would have played out differently." I assume that statement applies in the following situation, but I've always wondered about that as it applies to bunts. Buxton singlesAdrianza strikes out.Castro grounds to 2B, but SS drops the ball on the force, resulting in 1st and 2nd with 1 out (should be runner on 1st with 2 outs)Ervin Santana is up, so he bunts for the second out, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. (In the reconstruction, a bunt out would be the 3rd out, but he wouldn't be bunting in that situation. After all, it's Santana -- he would have slashed a double down the line!)Dozier singles and both runs score.Grossman strikes out.I assume that would be two unearned runs, but the notion of reconstructing the inning with the bunt doesn't make much since there should have been two outs and Santana wouldn't have been bunting. What is the explanation on that one? Is it the claim that Santana was actually bunting for a hit?

That's a good thought. That he's largely plateaued also may lend creedence to my hypothesis about his decline potentially being more gradual than others. Again, if he stays at league average hitter and plays outstanding defense, I can live with that. If that's the team's weakest link, that's a good team.

I'm of the "a good defensive 1B is worth more to the rest of the infield than we give him credit for" school of thought. And realistically, very few teams (especially in mid-size markets) are going to ever have an above-average hitter AND defender at every position. So if a guy is still playing Gold Glove defense at age 35 or 36 and has any where near a 95 OPS+, I don't have a problem with playing him so that you can spend the money elsewhere. I do think it will be important to find a way to lower him in the order, which in itself will soften the blow of being an average to below-average hitter, since it will knock off 50+ plate appearances. I also have a wondering about Mauer. In the big scheme of things, we still know very little about the process of returning from concussions. A part of me hypothesizes that his decline may be a little slower than others -- is it possible that the incremental losses in production due to aging will be mitigated a bit by the incremental improvements of being further and further from a concussion? Of course, maybe it goes the other way and folks fall off the map even more quickly when they've had a concussion -- we just don't know. But here's a question for the old-timers. I looked back at a similar situation 13 years ago, when the strike ended the season at about this time. The Twins had a 34-year-old local boy at 1B whose stats that year are actually quite similar to Mauer's stats as a 34-year-old so far this year. Hrbek retired rather than come back in 1995. So, were folks ragging on Hrbek as much as some are ragging on Mauer now, or is this once again a function of the $23MM contract?

I know it's lame to quote your own post, but it would be fun to have a Twins Daily gathering in Cedar Rapids on Saturday night (the 19th). Any takers? I grew up south of Iowa City and went to a bazillion game at old Vets Memorial as a kid, but I've only been to the new digs once. If someone has a suggestion on a good place to gather before the game, I'm all ears.

I'd like to see Sano at 3B as long as possible, but whether he stays or moves from 3B really comes down to the alternatives. If the available 1B is the second coming of a pre-concussion Morneau and the best 3B option is Nick Punto (and remember that Punto turns 40 this fall), it makes sense to leave Sano at 3B.If there's a new Gary Gaetti at 3B and Craig Kusick Jr. is the 1B option, you move Sano.We can't predict either with precision for 2019, let alone 3-5 years or more from now. Either way, as my momma used to say, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Edited... High minors: AA and AAA (and White Sox) Agree otherwise.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. The overwhelming sense of civility here is what keeps me taking part in Twins Daily and not the other sites. Thanks again, moderators and other posters.

This is outstanding news, and I'm glad it's happening already rather than waiting a couple more weeks. He has nothing more to prove.* *This opinion may or may not be influenced by the fact that I have a business trip taking me to eastern Iowa, arriving on the 19th when the Kernels play Beloit.
  14. IndianaTwin
I'll also add that this is the first 8-2 stretch of the season.
  15. IndianaTwin
Tied for the second wild card nuthin'. The Twins are at .50877, whereas the Mariners are at .50862. That's clearly Advantage Twins!

Nice game thread, with the always interesting Joe M conversation. Speaking of self-driving cars, my son points out that once we have self-driving vehicles, we'll have country songs about how your truck left you too.

Just one. A sweep means donuts for the office, but I'm too cheap to take them twice.

If Mejia can't go Sunday, I hope Gee gets the start.

Dozier had his 20th HR today on Aug. 6. On his way to 42 last year, he hit his 20th all the way back on ... Aug. 2. Let's see some more fun the next few weeks.

Thanks -- that's helpful clarification. I assume that also means he's likely not someone that will get a 40-man spot elsewhere either, so if they like him and he likes the Twins, they could offer a minor league invite and a shot to be in the mix, right? (And to clarify, I'm not necessarily a Hurlbut fan -- I just like having as many options available as possible, particularly if they've got a good history with him. And besides, that's gotta be one of the better names out there -- I could see putting that on a shirt.)
  21. IndianaTwin
    1. What is your assumption on Hurlbut? 2. One could suggest adding Trevor May to this list as well as he returns from injury. 3. I also like this list, and I'm with you in hoping they aren't planning on having two of them in the rotation at the beginning of 2018. In fact, I'd prefer their not planning to start any of them in the rotation -- I'm not sure that any of them are where Berrios was a year ago at this point, and it seems to have worked well for his development to begin 2017 in Rochester. 4. Which is why I prefer they not trade Santana. I could very much live with a rotation of: 1-Break the bank on signing a free agent who doesn't cost anything in terms of player talent. 2-Berrios 3-Santana 4-Mejia 5-Someone from among likes of a low-level free agent signing, Phil Hughes or a Dillon Gee-type. Yes, I'd even consider the right person on a minor league contract -- even non-tendering Gibson or Santiago and giving them a final shot. I know options like Hughes/Gee/Gibson/Santiago won't be popular on this site, but the No. 5 starter really only gets 3-4 starts before early May. I'd rather give your list the extra month in Rochester. 4. The message to the guys on your list heading into spring training is: "We hope to start you in Rochester unless you force us into having no choice but to add you to the rotation. Otherwise, your job is to go to Rochester and be ready for the callup, because the odds are that we're going to need a half-dozen of you over the course of the year."

All season, my response thought has been – ride the success as long as it rides, but don’t lose out on 2018 as the focus. So now, while it’s too early for the Off-Season Blueprint, how about a Late-Season Back of the Napkin? I’d love to see someone take a shot at inventorying what we’ve got on hand. Could someone give an itemized list of what we would spend (with arbitration estimates) on this list? C: Castro and Garver Corner: Mauer, Sano and Vargas. Middle: Dozier, and two of three of Polanco, Adrianza, and Escobar. OF: Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Grossman, Granite. SP: Santana, Berrios, Mejia, May and somebody else in the system. RP: Hughes and a logical seven based on those in the system. Other: Build in anyone that we are committed to that I’ve forgotten about. It would be nice to have estimates on some of what seems like non-tender candidates (Gibson comes to mind). Given that there are only two team unfriendly contracts (Mauer and Hughes) and only a handful that are more than a couple million (Castro, Dozier, Santana), don’t we have the ability to take on quite a bit money in the offseason, particularly on the pitching side?

My standard line is that basketball and football are just something to have on TV until baseball comes around.

Speaking of whining, now it's my turn. I was having a PERFECTLY GOOD DAY until you brought him up. Now I probably won't even be able to sleep. Thanks, "friend."

ChiSux seems obvious. In fact, at Cubs games, one can get shirts with the '70s-style unis and the "o" changed to a "u."
