Trivia on the Shot Heard 'Round the World. The audio you hear is actually from the radio broadcast by Russ Hodges. Games were not routinely recorded at that the time, but a Dodgers fan had his tape recorder hooked up to the radio. The game itself was the first ever to be nationally televised. On the TV mic that day was a young broadcaster named Ernie Harwell, who would, of course, go on to fame as the longtime radio voice of the Tigers. Tiger fans here in northern Indiana and nearby Michigan and northwest Ohio love Harwell just as deeply as Dodger fans love Scully. And deservedly so. Very conversational in nature. One of his regular things was to say, when a foul ball headed to the stands, "That one was caught by a fan visiting from Muskegon" (or Hillsdale, or whatever small Michigan town he thought of that day). He was known to be a wonderful gentleman.
