  1. Wow. I haven't heard that one for a LONG time. That was my dad's favorite song when I was a kid. He's 91.
  2. You’re a good man for letting someone else have a chance.
  3. I think you are misunderestimating the ineptitude of the Battling Gardys. Tuesday night's Twins lineup had only two guys with an OPS less than Detroit's BEST player. That same night, KC's lineup was okay through four (maybe five) but then had four guys under .600. Chicago had three guys under .700 and nobody over .900. Without Kepler, Buxton, and Gonzalez, the current Twins lineup is not nearly as good as earlier in the season, but remember that you're remembering a record-setting lineup. If you take the average OPS last night (and not even weighting that Wade's pathetitude comes in many fewer at bats than the rest of the lineup), their .778 OPS would still be 8th in the majors. That said, that horrible Detroit lineup scored 11 runs, which speaks to the unpredictability of baseball and how on any given night... So I agree with your premise that they can't count on easy wins because of the easy schedule, but it DOES benefit them to be playing teams with crappy lineups and crappy pitching, and I'd rather have the Twins remaining schedule than have Cleveland's.
  4. Which MIGHT not be the worst thing. Some of us were concerned he would run out of gas at the end of this year coming back from TJS. A late start would also limit his innings, but limit them on the front end rather than the back. And it's not unusual that a starter has gotten injured or pitched his way out of the rotation by around mid-to-late May. I was struck by the tone of the responses from Rocco and other players in talking about him this week. They seemed to be genuine in expressing their sorrow for him, rather than the somewhat veiled responses that often come and that seem to be hiding an "I can't believe he's such an idiot" feeling. And the sadness didn't seem to be coming from the perspective of losing a top-notch pitcher as much as losing a top-notch guy. I think we'll be able to tell a lot about the situation by how the Twins respond in contract talks. They're smart and know more of the story than we do. If they go after him, I'm inclined to buy his story. (Sorry. Three paragraphs was more than I'd intended. I don't want to hijack the game thread.)
  5. Yeah, I assume the ears also contributed.
  6. Same son, by the way, that when I mentioned that Bochy's career record after Monday was 1995-2019 in a career that lasted from 1995-2019, said, "I hope he doesn't get a big head about it."
  7. Cool. I looked at a couple posts. I don't get it -- why did they call him the Sphinx?
  8. My son was the play-by-play guy for his (award-winning) college radio station. One year for the station pledge drive, my wife and I gave at the level where the gift was the opportunity to share a shift with one of their regular deejays. Instead, I asked if I could do color with Tony on a basketball game. It was one of the most fun things I've ever done. There's something really awesome about doing something in your child's space, where he/she gets to mentor mom/dad and be the expert.
  9. Even if he has to stand in the dugout to swing, GarvSauce is my pick to click.
  10. Also get ready to celebrate on... 02-11-20 02-22-20 12-11-21 12-22-21 But after that, it will be a while, and I probably won't be around to see it. Ted Williams will, perhaps, if they can work out that freeze and thaw thing.
  11. Unrelated to the Twins, but going into tonight, Bruce Bochy, whose managerial career has lasted from 1995-2019, has a career record of 1995-2019.
  12. Okay, thanks for stopping in. See you later.
  13. Provis: If you drafted Garver in your fantasy league, good for you!
  14. An oversimplified response here, but... While this may make sense in terms of developing MLB players, that's not the only reason to have minor league baseball. If MLB is concerned about marketing to a younger audience, they could be shooting themselves in the foot by taking away the opportunity to provide (relatively) cheap access to pretty-high level baseball for families in their local communities. I certainly cut my teeth as a professional baseball fan by going to a half-dozen games a year at (old) Veterans Memorial in Cedar Rapids. (It still doesn't seem right to go to a game in CR and not immediately walk down this steep incline to a musty green hallway and then back up steps to get to the seats, stopping to get a back-issue of The Sporting News for 25 cents. But that's another post...)
  15. ClevelanDaily probably has similar posts on Civale.
  16. Bomba Blankets?
  17. I went to supper and left in time to hear the walk and the homer. You’re welcome.
  18. I'm not a native, so I try not to use that kind of language here. I’m afraid they’ll try to wash my mouth out with soap.
  19. I like antepenultimate. Or even better, preantepenultimate. But my favorite is propreantepenultimate. As in, this is the propreantepenultimate series of the regular season.
  20. In skipping him, they'd have to go by bullpen two nights in a row, since the other three starters aren't available tonight. Berrios going tonight allows him to go next Tuesday against and then on the second Sunday against Cleveland. At this point, this weekend shapes up as Pineda, Odo, Bullpen. With the off day on Monday, next week shapes up as Berrios and Perez on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Nationals. Staying on schedule would mean Pineda on Thursday against Washington, but Gibson would also be eligible to return by then. I'd use Gibson or the bullpen on Thursday to give Pineda, Odo and Berrios against Cleveland. All that to say that staying on schedule gives the opportunity for Cleveland to get Pineda and Odo twice, Berrios once, and the bullpen once. Recently, Pineda and Odo have been the two most effective, so that seems about as good as we can get with Gibson on the IL. Pulling contortions to get Berrios, Odo, and Pineda twice against Cleveland requires throwing everyone off schedule and also likely requires more bullpenning. What I DO hope is that the offense scores enough against Rodriguez tonight to feel good about pulling Berrios after a spiffy 82 pitches through six. (And I won't be at all surprised to see Berrios skipped once during the Chi/KC/Det/KC conclusion to the season, particularly if they can wrap up early. Or at the least that they throw in a bullpen game or two in lining up the playoff rotation.)
  21. And yet, in the all important Eliminate-the-White-Sox portion of the pennant race, with last night's win, the Twins have clinched finishing ahead of Chicago. They are 25 up with 24 to play. This is the first goal in any season. Then we can move on to loftier goals such as the Wild Card, Division championship, etc.
  22. I was an optimist. I had them at 88. I think they can do it!
  23. My full answer is above. I'm just saying I don't want to spend the money on Cole that it's going to take, especially if it's the $35+ million described in the scenario. If I'm going to spend $36 million, I'd rather do it on Pineda and Odo for one year and have than lock into Cole for several at that price per year.
