  1. Hoover's/Dun & Bradstreet has revenue (annual sales) figures of nearly every US company and these figures are usually pretty close to reality. I looked up what some MLB teams are claiming their revenue is. They are comical. Here are a few: Twins: $48M Royals: $9.9M Indians: $19M Tigers: $238M White Sox: $1M To be clear, this is not net profit. These numbers are what these teams are reporting as income. The Dodgers actually share their net worth with D&B and not just their revenue. They claim the ball club is worth $308,000. Your nearest corner gas station is probably worth more. I'm thinking all of this is simply illustrating that sports teams try to hide their real value and real income from the government, for various reasons. It's hard to get the subsidies sports teams enjoy if the numbers show the truth, which is that MLB and NFL teams are usually among the post profitable companies in each state.
  2. Clearly I did look at the data as I pointed out that what I was talking about (RF) is not the same as whatever RZR is. In order to do that, I had to look at RZR. The person who could not be bothered to look anything up is the person on the other end of the transaction. I looked at both metrics. For some reason you are coming into this conversation with a bias without properly reading the thread. Not sure what the point is other than to drag it out. I think the two of us have already moved on.
  3. Of course fangraphs is reliable. No one said it wasn't. But RZR is not RF. RZR, as far as I can tell, is the component of UZR that is used for range.
  4. I did not tell him to look up the data. I told him to look up the fact that what he thought was RF was not RF. I had already told him it wasn't, and he chose to argue rather than check.
  5. That's almost an apples to oranges comparison. First basemen tend to be power mashers. Thinking about Mauer is wasted time. He's gonna be around. The Twins should start him no more than 120 times, but other than that he is what he is......... I agree that he's not terrible. He's just not what one typically wants from a first basemen. But whatever, it's not like much has gone right for this team for six years anyway.
  6. what about funk and jive
  7. I have been following this group on facebook and have not been impressed by some of the posts. Also, they remind me of this, where a group of elite scientists decide they are smarter than everybody else and decide they should be running things. http://www.shannonsullivan.com/drwho/serials/4a.html Mind you, I understand that these days the least fortunate citizens can't seem to vote responsibly and there is an urge by smarter people to try to take charge. But if we are not inclusive we are on the wrong path.
  8. Here are Cash's numbers so no one has to look them up. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cashke01.shtml
  9. This would be a good time to start a rumor that Hughes is moving to catcher.
  10. Park started out much better than I expected from him as I was skeptical that he would ever hit well in the MLB. Then the bottom fell out. I'm still not certain what happened. I can buy it that his injury messed up his timing, but we won't know until he gets out there again.
  11. It doesn't seem like a "setback" since he said he wasn't anywhere close to being ready to do a bullpen session just a couple of weeks ago. This seems like the same course he was on to me. To me this is a non-story because Perkins already said this stuff.
  12. Only if things changed in the past couple of weeks, which seems doubtful. Perkins made it clear that he was not doing a bullpen session anytime soon.
  13. Great to have you here.
  14. There are some guys on this list who have some real upside.
  15. I'm a little surprised that they had him scheduled to do a bullpen session. Just a couple of weeks ago he said there was no way he was going to be ready anytime soon and that the only plans were soft tossing on grass. Maybe Rhett is just getting the story late or maybe the Twins tried to force something.
  16. This line is utterly comical and I don't know why some people stick to it so wholeheartedly. Sano has not played at 3rd for a long time because he shattered his arm while practicing fielding at 3B. He may be the only professional third baseman in history to have done this. There is also some great footage of a ball bouncing off the top of his head as he attempted to field an infield fly without bothering to look at the ball. Sano's only value as a player is with his bat. And if he misses a month or two because he injured himself in the field, then you've lost his bat from your lineup.. The Twins should always keep their eyes open for someone else to play 3rd so they can use Sano properly.
  17. There is no such thing as "DFA Waivers." Nor is there anything called "trade waivers." DFA and waiver rules are the same year-round. Trading rules change after August, but the waiver process is identical. The reason to do a DFA instead of just putting someone on waivers is that when you DFA someone, they immediately come off your roster. When you waive someone, they don't. Most players get waived in August but keep right on playing for the same team and never get traded or cut. When the DFA happens, the team gets 10 days to decide what to do (cut, trade, waive/reassign to minors, or put back onto the roster).
  18. Sano has a few more really's in that sentence than Alvarez.
  19. She's missing the fact that the Twins would have revoked the waivers if someone had claimed him. The only thing this would have accomplished is the Twins would have been forced to put him back on the roster. There is no strategic advantage of forcing the Twins to do this in February. Unless a team wanted to *trade* for Park, there would have been no point in claiming him.
  20. I would sign him in a heartbeat. He can be the primary 3B and back up 1B. Sano would then DH most of the time, only playing 3rd when Mauer has a day off (which should happen every 7-10 days). I would call this brilliant if the Twins actually do it.
  21. The "pace of play" thing is a red herring anyway. Games got longer when TV contracts got bigger. What slows down the game is everybody has to wait for the longer TV commercials to finish. If you listen to the Twins on the radio, they don't even have enough advertising to fill up the long breaks, so you hear the same public service ads 9-18 times a game. Baseball has never addressed the true cause of long baseball games and they never will because that's where the money is. If by some strange reason teams manage to trim a couple of minutes off of each game the league will simply fill that time with more commercials and act like the teams haven't done enough.
  22. I'm not understanding the *shuddervomit* response. The reality of the situation is that Vogelsong is probably the #2 or #3 best pitcher on the staff. *That* should make you *shuddervomit* and not Vogelsong's existence on the roster.
  23. A rich entrepreneur could fix gerrymandering and the "swing counties" we see in swing states that tilt elections. Build a factory in the key area. Hire minorities. Build affordable housing in the district for them to live. And of course give everyone the day off to vote. Give a bonus to people who come back to work with proof that they voted. Sure, Republicans will adjust and gerrymander again. But the new boundary won't be far away. Build new housing in the new district. Provide public transport if necessary. To the Buffets and Gates of this world, this would be nothing to do. And it might just be the only thing that can save us from ourselves.
  24. Park was DFA'd, not outrighted. The outrighting will happen should he clear waivers, assuming he was waived. (He surely was, as if not they can only trade him or release him within the 10 days). The rule about rescinding waivers states that you can only do it once for a player in a year.
  25. The explanation of DFA rules was close. The Twins will have 10 days to put him back on the roster, trade him, release him, or send him to the minors. The Twins will have 7 days to waive him which would give other teams enough time to make a waiver claim before the 10 days are up. Unless the Twins DFA'd him to pique trade interest, he was likely waived already so they can pass him to the minors. Seeing as the Twins clearly want to keep him, if another team claims him they will simply revoke the waivers which would force the Twins to keep him on the roster for now. I would be surprised if any team would force the team to do this during an offseason, so he will more than likely pass through waivers and go to the minors.
