  1. six dollars? Man, life is cheaper there....
  2. fair. to answer your other question, I would have used him in relief, like some other teams do with some of their pitchers, that year.
  3. So, 1 time in how many years? Do we think shutting him down that many years ago, or not, matters now?
  4. And the nats haven't been close since......and I was on the angst side for sure.
  5. scoops are part of fWAR, IIRC. I thought Dave or someone said that online this year. did you look?
  6. It was an example of going young, not him specifically. Stop with the old, never was, players. Apparently that was not clear?
  7. Another terrible, old, never was. I would love a new approach.... Like Verlander it s young player with upside. Like Slegers, for example. But why bother trying?
  8. Correct, but I do agree, he should be plan 7-8 or so, for starter.....not plan 1-5.
  9. Actually, at least on Fangraphs writer thought the Dbacks had a good shot to surprise people. Looking at Grienke and their health issues, one can understand how that might be......people have been underestimating Grienke forever.
  10. Congrats to Slegers. Maybe this will encourage the FO to stop ignoring the results of players already in the system..... I'd like to see Garver up. But then, that should have happened a month ago. At this point, I expect Granite and no other position player move until September. Really, really, really not a fan of how the FO has handled the bench. I'd like to see Gonsalves get a start Monday. I doubt he's "ready", but I don't think there is a better option.
  11. He really bungled the loogy again today.
  12. There is a real skill in inducing weak contact. Perhaps that is his skill. We'll find out more in teh next year or two.
  13. Setting the bar at one of the perennial MVP candidate's levels seems like an awfully high bar to have to clear..... I agree, though, we don't know much about Rooker yet. I'm ok with that, given that he's been a professional baseball player for 10 weeks or so......
  14. that's not even close to true, actually. There are plenty of studies on this on the internet. 1 run games are fairly random, not totally, but closer than your statement implies.
  15. You can't see how that is different in a small, family owned business, vs a very public company like a baseball team? And yes, we have very different experiences. In all 4 places I've worked over the last 30 years, people questioned moves of management. Over and over. Nearly every week in some companies. But then, I work with dozens and dozens of management types and their people.
  16. I think the "stat guys" were saying that it was hard to predict which RPs would be good, and that they were expensive because of that, relative to expected outcomes, not that RPs were not worth signing if you could figure out which ones would be good.
  17. huh. well, bias happens every day in work, conscious or not. friends, people you don't like, people that you don't know.......and conflicts happen. And imagine all the second guessing from others on every move about Joe (including, most importantly, the rest of the team). It isn't just how they act, but how everyone else thinks they are acting. This is super, super, common in business, to have issues with how teams perceive a manager treats another team member, imagine how it would be with a relative. I mean, this is management 101 stuff that you have to think about every day with a team.
  18. I'm not sure anyone said that..... but, if you can't see how it would put them both in an uncomfortable, very public, place, I'm not sure what to say.
  19. If the FO and scouts can't figure out any better than fans what to do, they should be replaced. How can they figure out which minor league players to use, if they can't figure out which MLB players to try? I'm with the others, sign at least 1 legit RP .... don't rely on the minors only. That has not worked at all for several years. Maybe more than several years now. No one is say "go crazy" or "sign every RP" or "replace the entire bullpen" or any such thing. People are asking for 1-2 RPs to be signed that they team thinks are "certain" to be good. Not flyers. Not minor league deals that aren't really minor league deals.
  20. I don't think managers are over rated, they are paid like a player that supplies 1 win or less, if anything, they are underpaid and under rated. Most of what a manager does is off the field. We can't see that at all. So, my comments are all about on field tactics. He bunts too much. And please don't argue by comparing him to NL teams. I think he handles the bullpen fairly well, using his good pitchers in high leverage situations, and his bad pitchers in blow outs. That said, I think he burns out certain pitchers in that pattern. Not a super fan of his pinch running for Sano with 1-2 outs late in games. The gain is way too small to lose your best power hitter. I think challenging Buxon early in the year was a mistake. I don't know if that was him or someone else. all in all, not a huge fan. But, since we can't see most of the work, I guess I'll just sit back and wait.
  21. Wow. This is a surprise to me. Good luck to him
  22. Great writeup Seth, I say you keep writing them. Gotta work thru this slump, and not give up.
