  1. How does signing a FA pitcher stop them from building the system? Why are those mutually exclusive acts?
  2. I'm with you. I was commenting on Jimmers stance that his results were bad, and I was saying that might have been due to first year back from TJ..... And, I can't see the Twins winning the Darvish or Arrieta sweepstakes. And, I agree, the list of who can help is short.
  3. so, pass on anyone the first year back from TJ? That cuts a lot of guys off your list every year.....
  4. mostly myth. The weather here is nicer than MN, until about now. Post season would be a potential issue, but no more so than Denver. though, I'd bet they would build a retractable roof, yes. Also, politically, I don't see how this government puts money into a stadium with all the other stuff going on here.....so unless Phil Knight decides he cares about Portland....
  5. No chance, imo, there are enough businesses here to buy suites, nor do I think the tv market is big enough. Seattle would be bummed for sure, to lose this market, they would want to be compensated. I think Vancouver, BC is actually a good idea. LOTS of money there, LOTS. However, a report came out yesterday that there is a Portland money group working on this..... The stadium would be tough. No one in the city likes going west to the burbs, no one in the far out burbs likes the hippy dippy city. Traffic is awful to the one suburb spot you could do (Hillsboro), and even worse in the city. Supposedly there is a site in the city. It will either be Amazon HQ2 (hahahahaha) or a baseball stadium (hahaha), or condos/apartments/park space. Frankly, this city will have to ban cars in the center part of the city at some point....
  6. They didn't have an English language broadcast for several years also....
  7. this is an off hand comment in a chat, but last year his predictions were decent....(he earlier predicted the Arrieta numbers).... Replacement Level 12:39 If Arrieta is 4/100, what does Darvish get? More years or just more per year? Dave Cameron 12:39 Both 12:40 I'd put Darvish at 7/175.
  8. They literally did not offer salary arbitration to Cliff Lee and 4-6 other good players, and let them all walk. That's when the attendance plummeted, and rightly. Yes, the league ran them the year after the league voted to contract Montreal and MN, and literally had to hire a manager a few weeks before the season, because the FO had fired everyone making money. They also took all the computer equipment and most everything else to Miami, leaving the team with almost no FO, scouts, etc.... It wasn't the fans that betrayed the city/team....
  9. They tried pretty hard to get a veteran DH last year. I expect them to try again. Is there one that can sometimes play 3B, if needed, or RF if needed?
  10. Why would Dozier settle for less than 4 years, 80MM-100MM?
  11. Actually, Montreal did support the team before, just the owners wanted to move. The minor league stadium is not near the city. Put one in the city, and it would draw, imo. but I agree, it's not big enough to support a MLB team for 81 games.
  12. that seems unlikely for travel, safety, and other cultural reasons. Mostly travel.
  13. IMO, and we are all guessing...... Buxton was 15th in fWAR in the 2nd half of the year. If he did that all year, he'd be in the top 20 among hitters/fielders. I can't see him thinking anything short of "top 5-10 player in all of baseball" money as a FA. Like, $30-40MM per year money. The OP would have him give up at least $38MM in pay those 3 FA years, in exchange for a bit more earlier (is it more?), and more certainty. That's a lot of money to give up, imo. I think the 116MM number is more correct, but possibly still light if he aggressively values his probabilities and the FA market. I think that number might get it done, though.
  14. I think being a FA a year later than Trout, and MLB inflation, means it has to be closer to 100MM, but we are all guessing at this point.
  15. sure, "enough" money will get anyone signed. Trout signed for $24MM per year, and will be a FA when he's 29. So, I think Buxton would cost $20MM per year, maybe as little as $17MM per year. Just over 100MM total, or more like 120MM, I'd think.
  16. Estimates are each existing team would get a check for 30-60MM on the day the franchise are sold, maybe up to 70MM. That makes up for missing 6 games a year pretty fast.....
  17. and yet, almost none of hte superstars are signing such deals the last two years....
  18. pitcher, pitcher who didn't make real money as a draftee, guy who didn't make real money as a draftee.....
  19. Heh, if everyone would do that deal in a minute, there is no way any agent would.....
  20. Correct, that's the one of the points of Dave's article on Fangraphs.
  21. Imagine trying to convince a FA to move to OK City. Even the NBA, with all its money, struggles with that.
  22. don't forget, more playoff games=more league revenue. Also, more revenue from hats, jerseys, etc. due to 2 more teams. But, I think your point, overall, has merit.
  23. 8 divisions>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>4 divisions. It's probably more > than that, but I was too lazy to hit enter 100000000x. And, I don't think for a minute Portland is a good idea. Not enough big businesses to buy up the boxes and season tickets.
  24. Agreed. Seems light to me. Really good FA will get 20+MM per year within a year or two. Also, this: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-possible-extinction-of-the-early-career-superstar-extension/ If they pull it off, they'll have done something few other FOs have been able to do lately, despite all the young stars out there.
