  1. I'm ok with trading for a bad contract, if they don't plan on playing the player. I just think it unlikely. I wonder what Donaldson would be worth on the open market right now? He wasn't all that good last year. Maybe 8-10MM on a bounce back deal? So, ya, eating 60% sounds about right.
  2. Like what? What is the "right cost"? I assume you mean the second tier of players, in which case we agree......but most of those are gone now too.
  3. Oh, they'll sign some players......but they are more likely Lynn level than CC level at this point, IMO.
  4. they don't have CC or Urshela, and they are better? They better not be trading the player they pick #5. The team doesn't "save for next year". They run year by year. They've said that publicly, and acted that way. I guess you could just give everyone a raise this year, and a lower contract next year? But no team does that....... Which available pitcher do you think is even Morris?
  5. Donaldson is worse than Miranda.....what would you do with him? Plus, man, he'd be mad he was traded back to MN. Hicks is a glass pistol. The ONLY way you trade for either is if NY is giving you one of their top 3 prospects for nothing in return other than cost savings.
  6. There is merit in this, though I'm not sure Mahle is at a low point. They can have him throw and get checked out. But I get your point.
  7. It was a great trade last year. They had the team, it just fell apart with injuries. Now? Now I'd do the reverse for Mahle (I think they can use an option to keep Gray). They don't have Urshela or CC. We know Buxton won't stay healthy. This team has a very nice floor, but the ceiling is way too low, IMO.
  8. He's a great utility player or decent 3B on a team trying to win it all. If he costs any prospects, and your best case scenario is that Lewis plays SS this year at some point, I don't get why I'm giving up prospects? Why give up prospects for a guy you hope doesn't play half the year?
  9. I agree with nearly all of this, except the last part about owners. Every GM acting the same kind of means the boss has an agenda, IMO. Also, I think the Mahle deal was going for it.....but otherwise, yes. Agreed.
  10. I can't see any SP you want to extend for sure at this point. Gray already has an option, IIRC. The rest have had injury concerns.
  11. the only one I want is Tatis.....but I don't think the Padres need to move him yet. Other than that? Yuck. I'd take back big deals to get better prospects when trading....but not just to get expensive players that aren't actually good that I want to keep.
  12. Not "sometimes". Always when it comes to the elite players. That's why they should stop looking at them.
  13. They don't care about the last 5 years.....they wanted to spread the money out. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/why-are-teams-issuing-extremely-long-contracts/ I agree with the premise of the article here and the one I just linked. There was ZERO chance he signs for less than Turner. Zero. Once he signed, the Twins should have pivoted to Bassit and, well, not sure who else. Xander is a much better deal, and I'd have been good with signing him for what he got. The Twins did this with Darvish.....and passed on every great SP last year. They have one, one, long term FA deal to an elite player in the history of their club. I think we have to realize who they are, and they need to also. The team must be built mostly from within, but when they do sign FAs, they need to aim at the second tier and get the ones they want.
  14. I'd deal anyone they don't think will be here in two years. This team isn't great. They have one star, and he's going to play 100 games.
  15. Swanson just isn't the guy you go massive for. He just isn't likely to be great long, even short term there are questions. They could have had Rodon last year for what looks like a bargain now.......I have doubts they sign him. But as pointed out above, they might be desperate.
  16. I initially thought this was a good idea. Now I'm not sure. Imo, this team isn't a legit playoff team. They should not be dealing prospects away. If anything, they should be trading veteran players off. Sixteen million a year for a guy you hope only plays half a year seems like an odd investment for a team that won't sign elite players.
  17. More than not having a great players at all? You want great players, you pay. Or somehow develop a bunch at the same time.
  18. Why is it dumb to pay players? I don't get this. Where should the money go?
  19. Syndergaard to the Dodgers....rumor has it. So, that's off the table. Also, y'all need an editor. Bassitt was signed a loooooong time ago.
  20. Agreed, no way they take an extension mid-year unless it is a TON of money. Also, people here yelled all summer that trading for an injured Mahle was a mistake, now everyone wants to extend him? I'd be good with a Gray extension at this point, like 5 years at 20MM per.....that's what it will likely take.
  21. Archer and Bundy aren't on this roster. If you can get Swanson for 5 years and 90 million, he'd already be signed in ATL or elsewhere. Even 7 years 126.
  22. Neither is here past this year. Those are the players you trade in a youth movement. It is one plan or the other....
  23. Thanks, I don't see them signing Rodon to a 6-7 year deal. They passed on EVERY great pitcher last year, despite it being the best FA class ever. And, for less money than Rodon will take..... Eovaldi? Is that really going to make them a great team with no SS? Which OF do you want? I'm not sure any of them are better than their existing options at this point.
