    The Twins were smokin’ in the first half of 2001. That was coming off four 90-loss seasons and there was nothing flukey about it! 55-32 at the All Star break.

    Wow. Thanks for posting. So I guess people are complicated. Maybe the statue should have never been raised, but when would that have been, 2009 or 2010, a much different time. Where do you draw the line? Griffith? Puckett? Hrbek? Do we really just want a bunch of Joe Mauer statues and no one else’s? The Griffith statue was going to come down eventually, whether it was today, five years ago, or later next month when an asteroid collides with Earth and wipes out all life. It served its purpose and it’s time to move on. Tip my cap to the fan who led this drive. One person can make a difference. /rant Edit: No, no asteroid is coming to wipe out life on Earth. That I know of.

    I think even a 50 game season at something between 80% and 99% of their remaining salary (high end maybe imo) the players should take that. The players have plenty to lose here, I just think the owners have more to lose. Also correction from earlier: I think young players like Arraez and Garver, with little service time who didn’t get big signing bonuses but have shown they can stick in the big leagues, will be the most hurt. I would hope if the players accept less than their pro-rated salaries for the rest of the season that the richer players would take the cuts for the younger guys.

    I am calling it a worst-case scenario, not something I am confident will happen. But not completely unrealistic to me especially if the two sides remain obstinate and the general situation outside baseball keeps eroding. Olney is already floating the idea of free agents after 2020 (for example, Odorizzi, Cruz) holding out in 2021 until after the new CBA is agreed upon.

    But thinking long term, with revenues that will not return to their previous levels and a CBA negotiation coming up, I think the worst case scenario for owners is that eventually players will retire or leave for international or independent leagues. The players hurt the most would be guys like Berríos and Buxton (my two faves) who have done well financially but lose the chance for large life-changing paydays, but owners will stand to lose much more if MLB becomes a shell of its former self.

    Buster Olney suggests it was the players who offered back 20% from their highest salaried players back to the owners, but the owners leaked the offer to the media in a way to spin it negatively against the players. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29241941/future-mlb-not-just-2020-season-stake If there is no season, players will be taking a 94% pay cut. However I think the owners have the most to lose long term if there is no season. MLB will for sure lose fans, just for starters.

    My take on it, in one sentence, is that Max Kepler accidentally stepped in dog s*** and then did a bad job of cleaning it off his shoe before coming back into the house. Kepler should have looked to what Baldelli said as a better response. Kepler will probably be asked about it again at some point. This is going to be a long, long national conversation.

    I have not read the above commentary yet, but I will. And I will probably disagree with a lot of it. I just want to say I appreciate coming to the blog and willing to speak your mind and think out your thoughts without resorting to quick and easy mud slinging in the other thread.

    Turns out I watch a game here and there, but my television isn't loyal to Fox Sports North during the baseball season Somehow I got all the A answers correct, but only one other in addition to that.

    Obviously the deal with the Red Sox was better, but getting Maeda is the key. Dollar for dollar a very good deal for the Twins, in my opinion.

    Early on, I took a look and the first or second thing I saw was Marwin batting, in a fairly quiet stadium, I think it was Tanner Roark pitching, and right before the pitch *BANG*BANG* for curve ball. Marwin actually struck out on that pitch but it was clear as day. Didn't want to post anything when I first saw that but very, very unfortunate how implicated he seems to be in this.
