    On the contrary, I think the Twins could use a player who can play multiple positions and contribute at all of them. Placido Polanco is a good example of this, as are Ben Zobrist and Mark Loretta. With benches as short as they are having a player with defensive versatility who can switch hit is a plus. If the Twins trade Plouffe and put Sano at 3B this will become even more important.

    I think Nolasco is on a very short leash and likely headed to the bullpen as the long reliever

    I think Nunez is naturally a third baseman, just like Trevor Plouffe. Neither player has the range needed for SS or 2B. The Twins don't really have a backup infielder they would use to replace any of the infield starters on defense. The starters are generally average to above average defenders and the backups are below average defenders. The only positions you might see a substitution for defense are RF (Sano), C (Suzuki) or 1B (Mauer).

    That's unfortunate if true. If Polanco can't field as well as Nunez they should probably cut him. Nunez is below average at all three infield positions and trending downward. Santana is bad enough at SS that they want him to play outfield.

    I like the idea of developing Jorge Polanco as the utility infielder. I'd like to see him on the team as I think he's a better ballplayer than Santana or Nunez but I don't think he beats out Escobar, Dozier or Plouffe.

    There are several broadcasters of Herb Carneal's generation I enjoyed. Ernie Harwell was great. Jack Buck was entertaining. Mel Allen and Red Barber were tops. Provus works well with Gladden. He learned well working with Uecker all those years in Milwaukee. Much bettter than Gordon with Gladden. I hope Rodney spends some time in the booth this summer. I like when he works TV broadcasts with Bert.

    Not much demand for third basemen this offseason. David Freese is still looking for work.

    It throws out half Dickerson's plate appearances. Most players play better at home, so he's penalized again. Plus there is a bit of a "Coors hangover" that depresses the road stats for Rockies players. Just use adjusted OPS+.

    I'd rather have Tyler Clippard than any of these lefties. He held lefties to a .468 OPS last season.

    Terry Ryan likes having room in the payroll in case he wants to make a move to fortify the team at the trade deadline.

    I agree. If Thorpe comes back healthy he could be a top 3 prospect. I think Felix Jorge is underrated also.

    I agree that there is a willingness to go with younger players due to cost. PED testing is a factor in the age trending downward but that doesn't explain the dip below 1979. A lack of MLB expansion will also drive average age downward. Expansion tends to help extend careers.

    On average each team produces fewer than two major leaguers of significance (worth the signing bonus) every draft. This is just the reality of a 25 man roster.

    Perkins as the LH setup guy. Buy another bullpen arm but don't force a "closer" role on Perkins or Jepsen. Better to have 3 guys you are willing to use as a closer.

    I think converting Nolasco to relief has real potential. At least it seems to have more potential than continuing to use him in the rotation.

    Kevin Jepsen might be interested in a two-year $10M contract when settling his arbitration case.

    I can see getaway day lineups where Sano moves to 3B, Arcia to RF and one of Park / Mauer / Plouffe to the bench. I think my next move this offseason would be dealing Tommy Milone for a relief pitcher that does better than he does the first time through the lineup. Some other team with less starting pitching depth will value Milone as a swingman and cough up a decent reliever for him. Perhaps it will take sweetening the pot with a Twin reliever from the end of the bench (Tonkin, Pressly, Graham). This also moves one person out of the way for Berrios, Duffey and/or Trevor May. My bullpen: Jepsen, Perkins, TBD, Fien, Nolasco, two of Tonkin, Pressly, Graham, Darnell, Rogers, or minor league free agent signings. The 6th and 7th guys in the bullpen should be developed from within but they need one more guy from outside the organization to help in high leverage situations. Then I would recommend bringing in players as minor league free agents for depth. They will have Berrios, Vargas, Kepler, Michael and Polanco in AAA but they need pitching, catching depth and someone at third base.

    You can pull guys back in an expansion draft. Not the Rule 5.

    #1, #2, #3, #5, #7 should be added. Those are the ones that would hurt if they got away. 1, 2, 3, 5 should all be in AAA next year and might be valuable depth call-ups, meaning it won't be a wasted 40 man roster slot. Felix Jorge has upside and I can see someone wanting to steal him. For #1, #2 and #3 if they don't want to protect them they should trade them to a team that would. Pat Dean is freely available talent. He won't make the starting rotation and he's not a great prospect for the bullpen. I think eventually he signs elsewhere as a minor league free agent. Zach Jones is a bad bet to stick all year in the majors. Ditto with Bard and Melotakis though someone could play disabled list games with them. They might protect Melotakis for that reason, power lefties are scarce.

    I'm on board with 4-man starting rotation but I see a 13 man pitching staff with 9 relievers, not 11 and 7 like your plan. Starters never, ever go more than 6 innings and 5 is common. That limits your starters to roughly 200 innings (40 starts x 5 innings). Starting pitching is the scarcest commodity in baseball. It is much easier to find a reliever who will be as good as your SP the 3rd time through the order. Blaine Boyer types are everywhere. The best relievers are as good as a SP the first time through or sometimes better.

    I think people underestimate what it takes to maintain two swings as a switch hitter. "Unfortunately, Hicks started drifting away from those changes later in the season, so his bat cooled off."

    They may have traded him too late. There were rumors of a Zack Greinke deal that would have been led by Aaron Hicks as the top prospect. In hindsight that would have been a better idea.
