    This is the offseason they should lock up Arraez long term if they intend to do so. Comments like these suggest they should not give him a long term deal. If you're 25 and your knees are so bad you can only DH you are not someone a team should make part of their long term plans.

    Miranda will not be a starter unless his fielding improves. He'll be a bench bat who fills in to give someone else the day off. He can't beat out Urshela or Arraez as a fielder in the corners.

    If you go to Baseball Reference and look up the team you will see an RField of 21 - which means they saved 21 runs above an average defense.

Mahle should be fine. Paddack comes back late if at all. Can Ober stay healthy for a full season? The rotation is pretty unpredictable - lots of injuries and youth. They will have to be able to quickly determine who is performing well and they aren't really good at that. 10) Maeda to the bullpen helps a lot here.

    This is the third or fourth defensive metric where Polanco rated poorly. He had an awful season in the field.

    And the only candidates they have to develop one are Jhoan Duran and Connor Prielipp. Prielipp is at least 3 years away.

    This is just objectively wrong. It's a lot harder to find someone who can give you five good innings than someone who can pitch effectively for one inning. Just look at Griffin Jax for example. He was terrible in the rotation but he was able to increase velocity and lean more on his slider in the bullpen. The vast majority of starting pitchers in baseball would be "lights out" relievers. That's where they find the relievers - guys who couldn't hack it in the starting rotation like Jax, Lopez, and Tyler Duffey (just to name players who were on the Twins in 2022). Duran is different because he never really got a chance to fail in the rotation. His injuries and lack of innings in recent seasons meant he was going to be limited in innings in 2022. His performance pretty much demanded he play in the big leagues. They compromised by putting him the bullpen. I don't see a reason to limit his innings in 2023, in fact I think he might be better served by not pitching with maximum effort every pitch.

    Nola and Wheeler have both pitched like All-Stars the past few seasons. Nola has two top 10 finishes in Cy Young voting. Wheeler got MVP votes last year. If they aren't "aces" then there aren't any in MLB.

    Or throwing the hardest split finger fastball in the history of baseball. Look at how many arms Roger Craig shredded with the splitter. I don't know if it's the max effort that causes injuries or the fatigue from pitching multiple innings, or both, or neither. If he's in the bullpen he's pitching max effort every pitch. Jhoan Duran wants to start. If the Twins won't let him he's not likely to sign a contract extension. Then you're looking at trading him in a couple seasons.

    Kenta Maeda is coming off surgery which will limit his innings. He's been successful as a reliever in the past and is actually cheaper if they use him in the bullpen.

    It is rare to get a leverage index of 2 for any inning, let alone 70 of them. This is probably not possible. His leverage was 1.6 last season. Would you rather hand the bullpen a lead 30 times a year or try to find 60 games where Duran holds the lead.

    I'm not sure if the Twins want a primary catcher. I think they would rather share the job 50/50. I'm on record as wanting them to sign Christian Vazquez as the other half. The no-hitter last night reinforced that.

    I'm going to bet Jeffers plays out his entire career before we get an automated strike zone in MLB.

    League average batting average is .243. So, you're fine with them as long as they're a league average hitter which is well above average for a catcher.

    People here are fixated on stolen base percentage when you really need to consider stolen bases allowed per inning. Jeffers allowed 31 stolen bases in 496 innings. That's one stolen base every other game which is consistent with the league median rate for stolen bases per game - 0.53. MLB Stats - MLB Team Stolen Bases per Game | TeamRankings.com Jeffers had an 18% caught stealing percentage. League average CS% is 25%. If Jeffers had been league average at catching runners he would have allowed 29 stolen bases. So the difference between Jeffers and an average major league catcher is two extra stolen bases every 500 innings. He's not throwing out as quite many runners because of his stance which is designed to allow him to frame pitches at the bottom of the strike zone. He doesn't have to get many calls with his framing to make it worth giving up 2 extra steals every 500 innings.

    Actually other than a weak arm Piazza was a pretty good catcher.

    I agree with this. The Twins have money to spend in the budget and are low on prospect capital. They need to spend some money acquiring talent this winter.

    The problem with upgrading offensively at catcher is they only play 80-100 games behind the plate. That's about the same as the offensive upgrade you get from the 80 games Buxton plays every season.
