  1. That's unfair. Jeter was a below average SS with a Gold Glove rep. Torii was at least an above average CF with a Gold Glove rep. He's more like the outfield version of Omar Vizquel. Vizquel and Torii were both very good defenders but not all-time greats.
  2. His sexual misconduct charge isn't going to help his case.
  3. Twins pick up a solid piece shopping the scratch-and-dent 20% off sale
  4. If defense matters so much you should be stumping for Andruw Jones - he's clearly a better defender than Torii. Andruw actually produced more at the plate over his career as well (RBat 119 vs 113). Torii has a (weak) case but not as good as Edmonds or Andruw or Lofton. That's just among recently retired CF.
  5. About the same as someone who has a .400 OBP and doesn't steal bases. You score by HR from first or second base.
  6. Someone should sign him, but not the Twins. He would draw national attention for all the wrong reasons. People can change, especially when met with public disapproval of their actions.
  7. Predicting the future of 16 year olds is hard and prone to error. I noticed you only listed the successful contracts from that year and not the 50 other high priced busts. You can't measure success in scouting and development on an individual player basis, just like you wouldn't measure success or failure of an investment portfolio based on the movement of one stock in the portfolio. They need to measure their gain in aggregate and in relation to other baseball teams. Are they generating more, less or the same talent as other teams?
  8. 80% success rate says very good things about minor league development staff.
  9. You'll need 18 pitchers to get through the season. That only leaves a few slots for projects and you might prefer your own guys.
  10. It's actually the teams spending above the luxury tax who can't afford a big useless contract. $30M of dead money for Correa will cost them $57M due to penalties. The Twins don't spend anywhere near the luxury tax limit so they can easily afford $28M of dead money 8 years from now. 10/285 is a fair deal. If he provides 35 WAR they break even. He should be able to provide that in 6 seasons.
  11. I agree they need more than Correa, but can't Correa be part of it? It's not like they're spending free agent dollars anywhere else. They have enough free cash flow to pay Correa's entire 10 year contract over the next 3 seasons.
  12. Pretty sure I'd rather have him at 10/285. 5 years $60M for his ages 33-38 seasons is pretty cheap. $12M will barely get you a starting infielder in 2028.
  13. Even if that's true they should still be looking for two veteran pitchers to add to the roster. Worst case they release them, best case they flip them at the trade deadline. It may be Feb 15th before those pitchers sign.
  14. Glad you agree with the rest of it. Balazovic has one option season left. If he's just as bad this year as he was last year he's getting released.
  15. Working my way backwards through that list - Dobnak is off the roster and probably never pitches in the major leagues again - we already know he's not good. Balazovic is more likely to be released than he is to contribute. Headrick and Henriquez are relievers in the majors. Woods-Richardson is the 6th starter, he should get plenty of chances to pitch in 2023. Winder is a reliever. Maeda is coming off a missed season and can't be expected for more than 100 innings. Ober has never been healthy. Varland - who knows, he's a rookie with 47 innings above Double-A. There were 313 innings pitched by Bundy, Archer and Smeltzer last season over 66 starts. The Twins know that Gray, Mahle, Ober and Maeda will each miss starts. If they all end up on the IL at the same time the rotation becomes Ryan, SWR, Varland and two other bad options. There are two automatic roster openings that will happen this spring. If they don't use those two openings to add pitching they should probably fire the front office on the spot because they aren't trying to win but they also aren't trying to rebuild. It's a 78 win team that subtracted two of the 10 best players from the roster. This team should not be on autopilot.
  16. Canterino is out with injury. Paddack will also start the season on the 60 day injured list. This team should absolutely sign two pitchers to fill those spots. They can option Megill and Moran to start the season. They're free roster spots.
  17. I think he'd be a great candidate for a bullpen conversion at this point in his career.
  18. Four for my daughter's D3 softball team and one for the Twins.
  19. Seems like this could be expanded beyond players in the system. When I think of organizational assets I think of Target Field, next season's first round draft pick, goodwill for the Twins brand, their television contract, etc.
  20. Falvey's contract is up after 2024. I think he'll finish next year and then they'll make a decision.
  21. According to me. I'm not the one claiming consensus on something where there is definitely not consensus.
  22. I don't know what a "local" TV channel is anymore. I can watch WCCO's news broadcast anywhere in the world. The team could move all broadcasts to MLB.tv streaming and make a ton of money in subscriptions.
