    Someone mentioned Scripps Sports on a different thread. That could become the local sports option. They already have broadcasting (Ion channel 41) and basic cable carriage.

    MLB defense was also a lot worse over 100 years ago. Strategies change. If you're playing the odds then (like Julien) you should take close pitches on a 3-2 count hoping for a walk. A .500 OBP beats a .180 batting average every time. Ted Williams figured out all this stuff in the 1940s. Rule #1 - Get a Good Ball to Hit. Rule #2 - Proper Thinking. Rule #3 - Be Quick with the Bat.

    I'm a little worried that both Kirilloff and Miranda are coming off shoulder injuries. Both could end up starting the season in AAA. Polanco might be the answer at 1B to start the season and his bat is not impressive at 1B.

    They're taught that because defense is terrible in little league and just putting the ball in play leads to a high batting average. Little league strategies don't work in the major leagues. You have to be able to hit the ball hard or you'll end up hitting below .200.

    That is not a fair market offer. Gray should be able to get $100M if he only cares about money. Someone will guarantee 3 years $75M.

    Great article. What they didn't mention is Baldelli also got the team to buy into the plan, which is the sign of a good manager. No pouting from Joe Ryan or Kenta Maeda, for example.

    He's not good defensively, but he WAS the regular 2B in 2023. I don't expect Polanco to be healthier or better at defense in 2024 so I don't really see him as a challenge to Julien as the 2024 starter. Polanco would be a $10M backup infielder who can be expected to play 80 games. Of course, none of this has anything to do with replacing Sonny Gray unless you're talking about reallocating Polanco's $10M toward a starting pitcher.

    Julien started more games at 2B than anyone else. He was the regular 2B.

    A couple nitpicks. "Laughable" is not the right word in that context unless you are trying to insult Wes Johnson. Duke is in the ACC, one of the best divisions for college baseball, not the Ivy League. Duke was also the #15 ranked team last season. The ACC placed 8 teams into regionals last season and had 5 teams ranked in the top 25.

    He's also injured all the time (games played of 80 and 104 the last two seasons) and bad at defense. Plus, he's lost his starting infield job to Julien.

    Half the $54M was shared with the league. If they lose all of it (and they won't) they're only really out $27M.

    They might be able to replace him in WAR in the aggregate but it will be extremely difficult to replace his performance above the average pitcher. That was a tremendous season from Sonny Gray. That said, I don't even expect Gray to repeat his 2023.

    The money isn't an issue with any of them, they're all underpaid compared to market value. The issue is whether they're worth a roster spot. De Leon is old and injured, so no he isn't worth a roster spot. Luplow is someone who they should upgrade by signing a free agent. Nick Gordon is gone if they pick up Polanco's option. Otherwise they're all going to be offered arbitration and only replaced if they can find someone better.

    Disagree, Michael Taylor is a clear starting caliber CF and Kyle Farmer would be the best available SS in free agency this offseason. I like your sentiment - signing Gallo when we already had Wallner and Larnach was silly - but your example players are better than you think.

    I don't think it's a dumb idea. Many players have shifted to 1B as they get older and more injury prone. He's tall and can catch the ball. Not sure how well he will do with grounders but my guess is he will do at least as well as Kirilloff at the position.

    You can probably keep everyone you would like to keep with an above market minor league deal.

    Only if they're up against the luxury tax in future seasons. Otherwise it always makes sense to back load a contract. Put the money in the bank and earn interest.

    I didn't mention the second definition because it wasn't what I meant, and you know it. I was explaining my post, though you seem content to ignore what I said and argue with yourself.
