  1. They only have a 2 game lead on Boston for the last wild-card spot. They need to get into the playoffs first and adding a rental bat or reliever could help.
  2. There are very few teams who are completely out of the race and those teams are bad for a reason.
  3. Most prospects turn out to be nothing special. It's perfectly acceptable to send a C prospect for a veteran on an expiring contract. Is anyone regretting losing Casey Legumina?
  4. JD Martinez and his 130 OPS+ would fit just fine in the Twins lineup. He doesn't make much money (most of it is deferred) so he would fit just fine in the budget. The Twins have been rotating players through the DH spot but they would be better off handing the job to a professional hitter like Martinez. I like Ottavino as an addition. Veteran relievers with good peripherals and bad results at the beginning of the season are always the best buys at the trade deadline. They cost almost nothing and often perform very well down the stretch.
  5. Good article that shows the Twins coaching staff knows a little bit about baseball. Woods Richardson has been fantastic, as good as almost any free agent pitcher they could have signed. If he keeps producing like this he's going to get votes for Rookie of the Year.
  6. Your quote is empty. I assume you're talking about the platooning comment. Yes, people have been platooning in baseball for over 100 years. Whatever era of baseball people remember from their youth doesn't matter. Platooning has always been part of the baseball you have watched. TK platooned with Pagliarulo and Leius. Gardenhire had the weird Dusty Keilmohr platoon.
  7. Is #2 catcher better? Teams need 2 catchers like they need 5 starting pitchers and 8 relievers. I doubt they are getting what they hoped for offensively when they signed Vazquez. His paycheck doesn't figure into whether or not he's worth keeping now. They can't find anyone better unless they trade for a different team's #1 catcher. Everyone available on the waiver wire is worse.
  8. Interesting. It could also be that he doesn't have the same finish on the pitch. If he lets go of the ball earlier it will spin less and locate higher. It might also explain the increased velocity. A pitch that "rises" is experiencing lift which means it is spending some of its thrown energy pushing air. We're talking about fractions of a second on the fingertips.
  9. Catchers mostly don't hit and in this low offense environment it's even worse. Vazquez is 51st in OPS among catchers this season. There are 60 roster spots which means there are 9 teams getting less offense than the Twins out of their backup catcher. Many of those teams are also getting less defense from their backup catcher which is reflected in Vazquez' WAR of 0.0. If Vazquez can provide an OPS the rest of the season in the 580-600 range (like his past two seasons) he would finish the season in the mid-40s for catcher OPS which is a pretty good bat for a backup catcher.
  10. Mazara is certainly more likely than Bryce Harper. If you look at Kirilloff's comps on baseball reference the top 3 are Jason Kubel, Mitch Moreland and Todd Benzinger. Moreland was a good fielding 1B so he's probably optimistic.
  11. True, but it could mean Kirilloff is traded at the deadline if they think he has no future with the team.
  12. According to many Twins Daily posters whenever players fail it is the manager/coaching staff's fault and when the players succeed it's only because they stopped listening to the manager/coaching staff who are always wrong and don't know anything about baseball.
  13. I think this means Kirilloff is out of options. Being out of options and arbitration eligible means his time left playing for the Twins could be short.
  14. If they're constantly in fear of being demoted then they probably don't have the makeup to succeed.
  15. That's inevitable. AAA is a LOT easier than the big leagues. You should expect a 200 point drop in OPS or a full run added to ERA for any player promoted from AAA to MLB.
  16. Vazquez is defending well enough to cancel out his bad bat. He's not the worst catcher in baseball with a regular job. If the Twins released him another team would definitely be willing to pay him the minimum to be their backup catcher. The money is a sunk cost so the Twins might as well keep him.
  17. He admitted that the rise on his fastball is gone. Without that movement it is very hittable. Caleb Thielbar struggles in loss to Rockies (mlb.com) It's a very good article. The Twins and Thielbar know exactly what is wrong. He's very aware that he needs to fix the problem or his career may be over. The question I have is why the Twins keep running him out there when his stuff is broken. He is not a pitcher they should be using in a tie game. I think the problem is fixable but it may not happen this month or even this season. He is healthy and lefthanded which means he will keep getting chances.
  18. What would you do with Jose Miranda?
  19. I'm saying he's only received 19 innings because every time they extend his outing he's been terrible. They have every reason to keep Louie Varland on a short leash. I thought they were pushing their luck having him go 5 innings.
