I was extremely low on the Diaz pick when they got him, so nice to see that he is doing well. Seemed like a lot of money and a risky bet to go for someone who was basically all bat, but i guess if it is a special bat then maybe it will be worth it. Time will tell but nice to see him proving my assumptions wrong.

Twins Minor League Report (8/11): Gonsalves Aces Barons
Dman commented on Steve Lein's blog entry in The Hanging SL
IMO Gonsalves is ready for AAA but I doubt they will move him there. Most likely he starts AAA next year and if he improves there like he has everywhere else I think he he will be starting games for the Twins at some point next year. He has been solid at every level and I think he is going to be really, really good. Better than I thought he could be. -
The only pitcher I have seen handle AA this quickly and dominate was Berrios so Gonsalves has the right stuff. I think a couple of more starts and they should just move him to AAA to deal with pitching to the crafty vets there. No reason to waste more time in AA. The faster he adjusts the faster he can help the Twins. I always thought Stephen would good but I didn't see him becoming this dominant. He has really put the time in on his craft and it shows.

Article: Twins Trade Deadline Tidbits
Dman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the Twins will trade Abad. I think they can get a return that will allow them to pull the trigger. I think they keep Kintzler unless blown away because he has solidified the closer role. Also I don't think other teams value him that highly. He sort of is who he is. He doesn't have a long track record as a closer or dominant relief pitcher. They will keep Santana primarily because they are just too thin on starting pitchers and next years free agents don't look good and prices will likely high for the talent that is there. If they do trade him they do need a good return as they gave up a fairly high second round pick to get him in the first place and right now he might be the best pitcher on our team. Doubtful that another team will pay the price needed to pry him from the Twins. I am surprised more teams aren't interested in Nunez. He has top 10 offensive tools and the flexibility to play almost anywhere on the field. He is top 5 I think in stolen bases and average for the shortstop position and he can hit a home run if you need him too. He could end up with 20 dingers by the end of the year. I know defensively he can be a liability but I think his offense more than evens that out. I would think he could be a valuable weapon or at least excellent insurance for some team willing to pay a price. -
Article: Twins Minor League Report (7/25): Lachlan Wows
Dman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ok so I will admit I did do a triple take on Tyler Beardsley. I checked where he was drafted, stats, etc. I mean 2 K's per inning isn't easily done. So I was pretty impressed by his outing. The things about E-town though is that stats don't seem to mean much there. Also he is pretty old for the league as there are a fair number of High schoolers so competition is mixed. He did peak my interest and I will be keeping an eye on him. Hopefully the Twins found something in this kid but there is a long way to go.- 15 replies

The Minnesota GM position should be pretty attractive. Young players coming up. Solid farm system. Some core players like Kepler, Sano and Buxton just getting started at the MLB level. A pretty hands off owner. The only real concern might be payroll limitation. Seems hard for me to believe even the top guys wouldn't be interested. I mean this isn't an Astros rebuild where you have to start with nothing. A lot of the pain of building the farm system is already done. Just have to make smart moves with the assets you have and continue to build the farm like everyone else. With any luck there are enough pieces already in place you don't have to do much of anything to find some level of success. And once you have a solid core in a couple of years you should have pieces to trade to fill weak spots. It would be hard to find a sweeter deal IMO.

Article: Twins Fire General Manager Terry Ryan
Dman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really don't understand the timing of this move. I would have thought they would wanted Terry around at least until after the deadline. While I get that someone needed to take the fall for the mess the Twins are in I didn't see it coming until the end of the season. I mean Terry would have or maybe has fallen on the sword for the organization. Getting rid of Terry should take some of the scrutiny off of JP so I guess it makes sense except for the timing. I always thought Terry had that job until he didn't want it anymore. I guess I was wrong. -
Gonsalves!!! What can you say? I love that guy. 11 K's that is dominating. I always thought he would be good but he seems to be on his way to great.

I totally agree with this. It needs to be a top 100 prospect to pry him loose. I know that seems like an over pay but the team that does it also has a chance to trade him later and get something in return. As Brock stated I don't see any reason to trade him just to trade him and we are going to have trouble protecting our prospects the way things stand right now not sure we need more mid level prospects. Also we need pitching if we want to compete next year so he is valuable to us as well. If you can get someone to overpay then go for it.

Article: Examining Potential 40-man Additions
Dman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like the list and wouldn't change it. I agree they have to find room for the top three and they will. I think Garver gets added because he has offensive potential and has gotten better defensively. Unless the Twins trade for a really good catcher he is essentially a for sure add. To add Turner I think you need to decide how you feel about Murphy because Turner and Murphy look pretty similar to me. I like Granite and have been watching him come through the system but if you add him them you potentially have 8 outfielders on the 40 man. I don't see that happening. Maybe Walker and Palka are considered more DH\1B than outfielders and Santana in center might not be ideal, but IMO the Twins need to decide about Santana this year if they want to add Granite. Get rid of Santana and Granite is an easy add. Also even if the Twins lost Granite they have Wade coming up in a few years who should be able to do pretty much everything Zach can do. Just have to wait a couple of years. Trade Nunez, Dozier or Escobar and Vielma is an easy add. He is never gonna hit for power but he can hit and plays better than average defense so he looks like a utility player for sure and maybe a quality starter if he can hit some gaps. Would hate to lose him and he would be a good rule five grab for a team because he already brings quality defense. I think they should give Wheeler a look in the second half. The last time I went to bat for him he pitched terrible for a whole season so I don;t know what to think about him other than he might be a fifth starter type. Thing is we have plenty of those already with a crop of guys with higher potential on the way so unless he pitches really well at the MLB level I don't see the twins protecting him. Granted there are guys who can come off of the 40 man but I think it will be hard to find 6 spots. The roster is getting younger so it is getting harder to find spots to hide guys. Will be interesting to see how the Twins value these players and what decisions they make. Personally I hope they trade or remove some of the marginal guys and vets on this team to make more room.- 71 replies

Thanks for all the info Jeremy. They really did a nice job getting the High School picks to sign. I really like the upside for this draft class. Whether anyone reaches there highest potential remains to be seen but I like that these young guys will have some time to develop in the minor leagues.

Rosario is on fire. Granted he didn't walk tonight but I guess when you go 4 for 4 you don't need to. Man he wants to get back to the bigs and I would rather see him than Buxton right now.

Benninghoff deal is a steep price for the 11th pick. Will that affect the Balazovik Signing? Also they had a couple of other high schoolers further down as well. This is gonna get interesting.

Wheel house is back with a vengeance. Don't know what happened to him last year but he is starting to look like the pitcher I thought was worth keeping two years ago. I defended keeping him over Gilmartin and last year that didn't look so good. Hoping he keeps this up.

Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As usual, I agree with most everything you say here. It is sad that we are giving him away for nothing especially given his age and potential. And yet on the other hand I don't see him as a good fit on this team. He doesn't have a great eye at the plate. He doesn't field any position well. Given his splits he looks like a platoon player. So basically he could be a DH with no real position flexibility. I just think the Twins can do better than that. If they had a crappy farm system I would say this is a huge mistake but they have Vargas, Walker and Palka in the wings as well and if Grossman is the find he appears to be I think they all are as good if not better options than Arcia at least at this point. While I am sad to see him go and have success elsewhere we can't keep everybody. It is a waste that they did not develop him properly and will get nothing back. I cannot defend that, but at the same time I think it is time to move on.- 267 replies

I tend to agree with you. Not every pick is a value pick as sometimes they want to pay a player less to pay an other more (ie college seniors). Lot's of boards have players ranked way lower or higher than other boards so consensus beyond the top 50 is iffy at best. In the end hardly any of these players will make it to MLB. You hope the scouts can find one or two guys a draft that can help the big club. That is a lot of swing and misses every year for every team.

I like the picks 1-5 which equals 7 as they all seemed to be picked right about where they should be and if not have some high ceiling potential. I am coming around on the Kirilloff pick. I thought college pitcher was the better value there but going with a young hitter for the next wave probably makes more long term sense. He has a lot of tools and a higher ceiling than the college pitchers so it makes sense. I hope he is a good one. I loved the Rortvedt pick and his signing so fast makes me like him even more. Glad he is ready to get to work and become the star player I think he can become. I hope they can sign most if not all the top 20 players and that this becomes a great class for them.

Article: Cody's Post-Draft Top 10 Prospects
Dman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like the list. It's a good list but tough going for a first round pick when you start out at 9th. Typically they start in the top 5. Lot's of first round picks and international signer's in that top 10 so I guess that makes sense. Like others I could quibble about placement but swapping is just a matter of preference at this point. I take it we would see the top high school catcher in the top 20?- 33 replies

I have been a big Eades basher, but have to say he has been pitching pretty well lately. I still think he is better fit for the pen but am happy to see him playing well.

Happy to see the Twins going hard for hitters and going young. Should help set them up for a second wave. Low minors has been short on good hitters the past few years as they focused on pitching. Hard to say if these guys turn out but they did seem to get a little of everything. 5 tool guy, power guy, speed, the best prep catcher etc.

That is a pretty impressive top ten. I am hope, hope, hoping that the pitching will translate to MLB. If it does I think this team is ready to be really good for quite some time.
