Article: 2019 MLB Draft Day 1 Thread
Dman replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
yeah he recently popped up. He could be better than all of them he might have a higher ceiling than Stott or Carroll but I feel like his floor is much lower with the suspect hit tool. How many times do you see great athletes that just aren't that good at the plate, Kid is young and made strides I just think there is more risk in this than the others.- 192 replies

Stott is the highest rated by fangraphs and others will he be the pick or will they go against the grain and come up with someone different? They could go with Carroll as well.- 192 replies

I think the Twins go with Langiliers or Carroll if they are still there. With such good hitters likely on the board I don't see them going with a pitcher but since high end pitching is the weakest area in the system maybe they will surprise me. Taking pitchers early has been unkind to the Twins in the past. The only success story I can think of is Kyle Gibson. I take that back they also took Garza in the first but traded him. Also they have been good at finding hitters in the later rounds so maybe they take a chance on high end pitching with the first pick anyway? If Stot or Jung are there I could see them picking one of those two as well. There will be some good players left when we pick I guess it just depends on what kind of deal they cut to get one of the better players in that range.

Article: MIN 9, TB 7: Odorizzi Shines In Tampa Return
Dman replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Call me a worry wart but after we lost that first game big to Tampa I was worried the wheels might come off. I thought Tampa's pitching would slow our offense down and I felt they had the better starting pitching staff going into this series and the better bullpen. Taking three out of four from them really makes me feel better about this team. It was nice to see our offense put lot's of pressure on their pitchers and for the most part continue to do damage all series long. Even going up against good pitching this offense can produce. Also I felt the team played really good defense and did not give Tampa extra outs. At any rate I am really, really happy they took this series to help take some of the worry out of me.- 27 replies

Nice to see the offense have a good day today. Just short on a few fly balls that turned into doubles. Everyone got a hit except the leadoff man Kepler. Can I Just say that I don't have much faith in our pitching and yet they continue to do well. Going into this series I wasn't sure we could play with the big boys but with the win today we have held our own against the good teams we have faced so That bodes well.

Article: Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month - May 2019
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah I should have said signed but the Twins did PICK him over other IFA's so I used the word pick. He never was fat but I had heard things about him needing to watch his conditioning I assumed that meant not to get too heavy or that there was at least a concern he would get too heavy. As for slow MLB.com had him as a 30 runner to me that is not that fast but maybe they made a typo? Never said he had a bad K rate just that he was under 20 percent with a good eye. Below is MLB's scoutng report on him. Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 30 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45 The Twins signed Diaz out of the Dominican Republic in 2013 for $1.4 million, then watched him struggle a bit during his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2014 and again in the Gulf Coast League in 2015. Things really started to click in the Appalachian League in 2016 and he made a successful move to full-season ball that included a Midwest League All Star nod in 2017. He didn't back that up with a strong performance in the Florida State League in 2018 and a fractured right thumb sidelined him in late July. Diaz's value lies in his offensive potential from the left side of the plate. Over the past two seasons, he's shown an ability to make consistent contact and drive the ball to all fields. He has tremendous raw power that he is still learning to tap into and it has been really encouraging that he has kept his strikeouts low and hasn't sold out to try to hit the ball over the fence. A below-average runner, Diaz will be a first baseman only and should be capable enough to not be a liability there. As long as Diaz continues to watch his conditioning and continues to refine his approach at the plate, he should fit the profile of a run-producing first baseman in the future. He'll play all of the 2018 season at age 21.- 19 replies

Article: Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month - May 2019
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I never liked the Diaz pick. Thought he would be a fat, slow, swing and miss 1st baseman. I am very impressed at what great shape he appears to be in and the way he is hitting the ball is even more impressive. HR's are hard to come by in the FS league and he doesn't appear to be having trouble. He has a good eye at the plate as his K rate is just under 20%. He doesn't walk much but making contact is just as important as walk rate and he can barrel up the ball. Congrats to Lewin on proving my assumptions wrong and having a Fantastic month of May.- 19 replies

Article: MIN 5, TB 3: Twins Rally, Top Rays Late
Dman replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have to say when the Rays were up 3 to 1 I was thinking maybe we just can't compete with the East teams. I was glad when they turned it around and found a way to win. OUr players chased some horrible pitches, looking at you Rosario and Astudillo and yet those two both came through in the clutch. As long as our pitching holds this is going to be a special team. Stinks that Sano got robbed of a Home Run. I think Domes and Baseball don't really go well together.- 41 replies

I have no idea what the Twins will do this year. After the first ten picks or so though the next 30 players are pretty much rated the same so it just depends on how teams have those players ranked on their board. So we should be able to get two really good players and then some players that hopefully we can develop. I don't think this is a great year to save a ton of money early on if it means taking a lessor player. There are so many teams above us that can cut deals that it might be hard to find a deal anyway. If they can do it and still get the player then great but I wouldn't let that factor in a ton this year. There are going to be good players at 13 and the Twins will be one of the first teams to pick from the second tier of talent. I hope they make the right choice.

Article: TB 14, MIN 3: Well … That Just Happened
Dman replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Perez seems to play with fire several innings every time he pitches. Lot's of times he has been able to work himself out of it but not tonight. Hoping for a better approach from him in the future. It is a tough way to start the series as you hate to just give a game away but it happens to all teams at some point. I hope we can compete with these guys at some point. If we can't beat the teams in the East then it doesn't really matter what our record is as we will be out in the first round. -
Article: How the 2018 Twins Draft Looks One Year Later
Dman replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That Jeffer's pick I didn't like last year seems to be paying off for the Twins. His numbers haven't been too far off of Larnach's this year and he was taken in the second round and plays the valuable catcher position. A bit disappointed in Keirsey and Helman this spring but it has been a down spring for a lot of our prospects. There is still time for these guys to adjust especially the high schoolers but this draft appears weaker than the last couple of years.- 22 replies

I am sorry now that I wasn't a believer but I had this game as a loss with Devin on the mound. Of course I couldn't have been more wrong, Devin was brilliant tonight and now we have our best pitchers ready for the Tampa series. He man handled that tough Brewers lineup tonight. I was shocked at the out come. I hope he gets another chance to prove himself. Very happy to grab a split with a tough NL team. Here's to hoping the bats come alive against Tampa.

Yeah Astudillo was supposed to balance that low OBP with power but it hasn't worked out that way. I agree with most posters that pitchers are giving him garbage to hit early in the count and he has been all too happy to oblige. It would be nice to see some semblance of plate discipline so that he can get better pitches to hit. For a guy who can hit almost anything he shouldn't be afraid to get to two strikes as he should be able to hit whatever else is coming. I think that if he can work counts more then he should get better pitches to hit. Heck don't be afraid to take a K watching strike 3 go by. If he can be more unpredictable I think he stands a better chance. I still like the turtle as a player. He plays the game with the right intensity but it might not hurt to have him go down to AAA and work on working counts in his favor a bit more.

I agree, I don't see them taking a risk on a high school pitcher when Jung, Stott or Carroll might be there. I also think they might try and cut an underslot deal for Langeliers if he falls that far. The first six picks feel like a lock. After that it seems to be anyones best guess as to what order the players will fall in. Personally I think a good bat will still be there at 13 and it will be hard to pass up. This year is going to be tough to gain much of an advantage with bonus pool money as Arizona and lots of other teams will have more money to make deals. so I wouldn't get too cute trying to do underslot deals. Just pay up if it means landing a solid prospect. We have a solid farm so no need to take lots of risks. Just go with your board and hope for the best.

So I kept telling myself I am going to be nervous about this team until we have at least a double digit lead in the division. I never expected them to get there this early. Now what am I going to fret about? What other standards of non belief can I find? It's a tough year for the typical Twins fan to wait for the other shoe to drop.

Article: MIN 8, CHW 1: Gibby Sizzles Over 7 Solid Innings
Dman replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know this a great offensive team but championships are won with great defense as well. Austudillo's throw out at second was a thing of beauty. Gonzalaz's run saving catch was fantastic. Those are the plays that make me excited for this teams chances. The Whitesox were never able to recover after making mistakes in the field and to beat this Twins team you can't give away runs. To some extent the Sox beat themselves today. The Twins also knocked another starter out before the 5th inning. This offense is so tough to face. Every guy can do damage. You can't pitch around players. I haven't even mentioned Gibson yet. What a crazy good job pitching today. The Sox have some tough batters and other than the one HR he gave up he rolled through that lineup. This team is starting to make up for all the miserable season I have watched the last several years. I just love watching this team play every day.- 53 replies

I don't know if the Twins will trade for a top tier starter or not but I am certain they will trade for pen help before the deadline. They have too many prospects to keep them all. Too many to expose to the rule V draft. They should use that capitol wisely and do some trading. The main weakness on the team is pitching. Come July they need to make some trades and I am certain they will.

I agree it depends on how motivated the seller is and what the market is for the player. Other than Sale it seems the going rate is a top 3 or 4 player and then a couple more around the top 10. Sherzer is a top of the league pitcher so definitely could cost more than that who knows. I think giving them our top three is a bit excessive though.

I think if I am the Twins I am shopping all the prosptects that are a year away from the rule V draft and seeing what kind of talent they can get with that. If it is not good enough then start figuring out what it is going to take to get what they want. Good deals can be struck in a variety of ways. I think the Twins have some interesting players at AAA for other teams. Raley's numbers look MLB worthy to me. I think Wade has a real good chance as well. Gordon is a bit of a wild card but he is a former 1st round pick that has hit pretty well all the way through the system just has had trouble staying consistent the entire year. Rooker would be on the table for me as well but I doubt his value is very high. Cave has some question marks but seems like a good bet to be at least a 4th outfielder if not better. So those are all guys I would look at moving and see what you could get. I agree Larnach and Wander could be included as well as they seem like depth right now. The four guys I would least like to give up are Kirilof, Lewis, Balazovich and Graterol. For me pretty much everyone else is in play. Would kind of hurt to lose Miranda, Baddoo and Rortvedt as well but I could live with losing one of the three. We should have another good draft ahead of us so this should be a good time to trade some talent. We can't keep them all anyway might as well get something we can use for some of them.

Article: MIN 3, LAA 1: Pitching Great, Sano Homers Late
Dman replied to AJ Condon's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am happy the Twins are playing Arraez and not just sitting him. I think he has answered the question of whether he can handle hitting MLB pitching granted it is a small sample size but the fact that the game doesn't seem to big for him is nice to see. Sano has a knack for just when you think he stinks he does something great. Offensively he single handedly won that game for us. Nice to see him get the big hit instead of strike out. Odo keeps making me look silly for doubting him this year. He has been outstanding and makes this rotation look better. Always good to have a big year in a contract year as well. -

Article: Twins Minor League Report (5/13): Baller-Zovic
Dman replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Most of the guys on this site hated the Jay pick but I defended it. He was supposed to have two plus pitches with a floor of elite reliever. From day one he was hit hard or allowing hard contact. He just never seemed to have the stuff to make it from day one. I kept hoping he would turn it around but he seems to be the same unreliable pitcher pretty much every game every year. I mean Ryan Mason an after thought pick is pitching better than he is. I am finally starting to come around that Jay was bust a pick.- 40 replies

Article: MLB Draft: Eight Names to Know
Dman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is so hard to predict if the three teams above us will go with pitchers or hitters. The sweet spot for pitchers seems to start around pick 10. If you want to grab one of the better pitchers you need to do it then as it looks like slim pickings by the time you get to pick again. The thing is their is some interesting talent in the 9-16 range and I can't make up my mind who the Twins should pick at 13? All I know is that they will get a very good player with that pick. Personally I would like them to go with a pitcher with the first pick as they have been able to identify bats in the later rounds. The problem comes if teams that pick 9-12 decide to to take pitchers then there will be better position players that fall to our spot as well. So whats the right thing to do I have no idea at this point. If Stot or Langeliers falls to 13 it would be hard to pass on either one. If Manoah were to fall to 13 then he would be hard to pass up as well. It is hard to say what the Twins will do. I just hope they make a good choice. They should be in a good spot to get some good talent again this year.- 14 replies
