  1. Very encouraged to see Celestino third on this list. He was a big part of the Pressley trade so I am hoping he turns into a special player. He has had a really good month. Hopefully he has figured some things out and continues to improve and move up.
  2. I am going to miss Davis but you can't keep them all. He had some tough years but the Twins stuck with him. I really think he is ready for the Majors so I agree the trade is really good for him and the Giants.
  3. Nice article! Always nice to take a deeper dive looking at players in the lower levels. Really appreciate the focus on the DSL players who we often overlook. Maciel has been impressive as a 20 year old in High A ball. If he continues to play this well he should start in AA next year. Would be nice if he had more power potential but I have seen the value a good on-base guy can bring to the team (Arreaz) so that skill has value as well. We'll have to wait a while to see how his skills translate at the higher levels but I like what he has done so far. Gary really surprised me this year. I thought it might take him longer to get his hit tool going and I wasn't sure if he would hit for power or not. Right now he looks like a good sign for the 9th round. Might be in the same mold as Badoo and Miranda will have to wait and see though. I have been watching Baez and Urbina since the beginning of the DSL season and Baez has been very consistent all year. Hopefully the bat is for real. Urbina has been a bit streaky all year. I am not certain he will make the GCL right away next year or not. Diaz was a surprise for me as well. He started out very hot to start the year and seems to be slumping a bit right now. All three appear to have good bats. It is just so hard to tell how good guys are in DSL as I have seen guys with great numbers there and then flame out pretty quickly so stats at that level don't seem to mean much. At any rate like you I like all three guys and I hope they all continue to do well.
  4. To be honest I always just thought of Dobnak as filler. It is funny how I think about guys who are drafted low or not at all. I guess my general feeling is they don't have a chance to make it. Looks like I was wrong about Dobnak. I knew he was having success but I never liked his K rate so figured he would get killed at one of the higher levels. He kept moving up and while I waited for him to flame out he kept getting guys out. He has a really nice WHIP this year so he is attacking hitters but they must not be getting great contact because his ERA has been under 3 all year. If he keeps this up he has a good chance to make the big club next year. Too bad Duran melted down in the 6th. No hit through five shows he has some impressive stuff when he is on but seems a bit fragile mentally to me or maybe he just ran out of gas hard to say. I hope he keeps pitching well and maybe we will have a pitcher with front line stuff. I never really understood why they didn't start Breek in E-town this year. I mean I guess it is just a number game but I felt like the way he pitched last year he should have started there this year. I guess you can make the jump to A ball from either league so not a huge deal but I do wonder why they kept him in the GCL.
  5. Yeah I get that. All I am saying is it just hard to say yeah this guy is great when he gave up six runs and couldn't make it past the third inning last night. Every pitcher has his bad game now and then so I get what you are saying but the reality is it is hard to praise how good a guy is after an outing like that. I mean he was awful last night that is just the reality. He didn't look dominating. He didn't look like he had command of his pitches there just isn't much good to say about an outing like that and it was the first game with his new team. The first time I get a chance to see what he can do. I can't say I was impressed because well I wasn't. I also get what you are saying about results matter more in the bigs. Sure in the minors they are learning as they move up and results don't mean quite as much but the reality is they do still matter. If he throws like that every game then he won't move to the next level. Players need to show some level of dominance to give the team a reason to move a player up so results do matter. Even if they move a marginal performer up odds are they won't make it to the level beyond that anyway. You have to have good outcomes\results to keep moving up otherwise your talent level has peaked and you won't make it to the next level. I agree with you it was just one game but it was a game that did not show that he is a dominant pitcher as he didn't get good results. The other team was getting hits all over the place. It is just hard to say hey that guy is really good after a performance like that. Not trying to be mean but realistic. I am sure he will be better next time out and then I will be sure to mention all the positives. I still like his potential one game won't define him it just came at kind of a bad time IMO.
  6. So does Cole Sands have a chance to make it to AA this year? He has been outstanding in the FS league. I mean a .79 WHIP means he isn't having control problems and if he is challenging hitters and they can't seem to hit his stuff shouldn't he be moving up? He has been in High A a couple of months now so those stats look to be pretty solid IMO. It would be nice to give him a solid month in AA to see how things translate there with tougher hitters and smaller parks. Should set him up with things to work on over the winter.
  7. Kind of tough timing for this article after he gave up a bunch of runs in his first start with his "great" stuff. I know it is just one one game and he appears to be a guy that is going to be a good pitcher. He has the size, the control, the tricky stuff that you like to see your pitchers have. He also is willing to leverage technology to make himself better so you know he is dedicated to his craft. I am still a believer and the Twins scouting staff picked him for a reason so they must like his stuff as well. This is a results oriented endeavor though so hoping to have better things to say about him in the future when he is having greater success.
  8. And yet Arizona gave up their #1 prospect for him rated number 59 in the top 100 on MLB site. He held a potent Twins offense to two runs. Maybe a lucky night but it seems like he made believers out of Arizona. Maybe he does turn back into a pumpkin or maybe he is the next Kluber hard to say I don't know much about Gallen but he impressed in the one game I saw him and Arizona obviously sees value in his arm so it makes me wonder.
  9. He made a nice play ranging far to the first base side during the game but not many balls were hit to him so it is hard to say just how good he is defensively. There were a couple of balls hit past him but the Snappers were just pounding the ball so not much of chance to do anything about those. It looked like he might have been working on his power stroke as I believe most of his outs were fairly long fly balls. He didn't seem to have the power of Akins, Isola, Weiss or Snyder so I think your assessment of not great power is likely correct but really hard to tell from limited at bats in just one game. The thing that impressed me was his ability to swing at pitches in the zone and get contact. So many of the others wiffed on a lot of pitches but he always seemed to find ways to contact the ball and he didn't strike out when I watched him. To me he had the best approach at the plate and always seemed able to put the ball in play. Even though he didn't get a hit in this game he was the most impressive batter on the team IMO.
  10. I agree with you on the Marlins. I don't know much about Gallen but if he as good as he was against us I would have created a package to get him. We need good young controllable pitching and if he was the answer and could have been had for Larnack or Kiroloff with some other throw in's that could have really helped us IMO. Maybe Gallen isn't that good? I don't know but even he was just effective he would have been a nice piece to have moving forward. We need pitchers not hitters right now. so trading to even that out would have been nice IMO.
  11. I think the Twins FO did OK here. Seems like they stuck to their plan of safe guarding the farm and finding a way to offer value to another team with Prospects largely outside the top 30. Given the prices for the higher quality talent this year I think they did well. They managed to turn two potential rule V players into assets to acquire talent (Two Relievers) at the deadline and even add to the farm an interesting pitcher with three more years of control left who is currently in our top 30 prospect list and a lottery ticket player to named later. They gave away no high end prospects to get the two relievers who should be able to help this team compete through the end of the season. The pen is what I wanted them to fix the most and they did that. Would I have loved a high end starter? Yes I would have but not many of them moved this year so I don't find myself blaming them for the odd market this year. They are right in that we need to believe in the players we have. Believe that they can get the job done. There are 5 playoff spots and really only 6 teams competing for those spots. Once in anything can happen. Right now I am happy with what they got done.
  12. I went to Beloit with my 8 year old son to watch the Kernals get shellacked. I guess I am a good luck charm for the Snappers. It looked like Kody might have been OK had Wander not almost airmailed a throw he had plenty of time to make and made the first baseman leap for the ball taking his foot off the bag. Things just seemed to unravel from there. Cabezus is a plucky guy but he looks far more suited to the pen than starting. He also gave up some pretty loud contact but was far superior to Kody this night. Funny thing is I think Casanovo pitched better than both of them and he is the catcher. Wander didn't look good in the field at all and while he batted OK it seems like he has a crap load of work to do if he wants to be even a good not great player at this point. I know he is young but he has bust written all over him from what I saw. He doesn't look great defensively at short either. Honestly I don't think I would have him in my top 30 right now and if I did it would be in the high 20's. Maybe he just had a bad game but I didn't like what I saw tonight. Ricky De La Torri one of my favorite players looked liked he couldn't make contact with a ball in a softball beer league, but he did look good defensively at third base. He was swinging at air all night. Some one needs to work with him on that swing you can't miss the ball as much as he does and consider that a competitive at bat. Isola, Akins and Weiss looked decent at the plate but lots of popups and long fly balls for them tonight and only one went over the fence. They are all long shots but they look like they can make it to the next level. The only guy that looked really good at the plate I mean really good was Spencer Steer. Good eye with the strike zone, always making contact, actually had a clue at the plate. I know he went 0 for 3 but he looked good. He looked like a player that could move up. Everyone needs to improve quite a bit from what I saw hopefully things start to click for some of those young guys. I really want to see them succeed but what I saw tonight was pretty discouraging over all.
  13. Man I wonder what crazy offer they made to get Gallen. He had a ton of control left.
  14. Wow we are getting down to crunch time and still not much happening out there.
  15. They will make a move it just won't be as big of one as we all would like, I am sure they talked about deals for all kinds of guys at various levels and will work the phones today to see what they can find. If they don't find anything they can stomach I guess I would find that hard to believe. We have a lot of talent that is rule V eligible and they might as well do something with those assets rather than let them go for nothing. I still believe they will make at least one deal.
  16. Man Cleveland got a haul there and they got just what they needed as well. I hope their FO is writing thank you notes to Cincinnati. Reyes appears to be Sano part 2, They get another big bat in Puig to finish this year out with. They get Allen who was considered at top 100 prospect by some and Moss looks like a very good reliever is his floor as well as a flier on a young bat.. All for the reds to have essentially a one year shot at a playoff berth? They have to be crazy. Why can't we ever run into deals like this? Well buckle up because the fight for the division is on now. Just when I thought the Indians might be starting to crumble they get a boost like this to keep them at the top. I am sure it was a tough decision to give up Bauer early but I think they still have enough front line pitching to win the division they just needed more power in their lineup and they just got it. Baseball is funny you never know what is going to happen but this trade looks like it really helps the Indians for the stretch run. We'll have to see how it plays out.
  17. Escobar is pitching pretty darn well for an 18 year old in the GCL. This guy looks like he could be special. Does anyone know how hard he throws? I think if Graterol is going to be throwing at 100 he should be in the pen. Shoulder issues brings back memories of Alex Meyer so I think the Twins should be more careful this time around. We need help in the pen anyway. The Rochester lineup seems to have cooled off a little bit and Jaylen has been human finally going 0 fer in a game or two.
  18. Technically I would say Kirillof is expendable as Larnach is somewhat comparable in skill set. Granted I think Kirillof has the better bat but Larnach might have the better arm and better eye at the plate to take walks. While I don't know a ton about pitching I don't really love Thor's stats. and while two and half years of control is nice I have to give up a likely All-Star bat that will have 6 years of control and more prospects to boot. The value is definitely on the Met's side in a trade like this but we do have a need for immediate pitching help so that is the price you pay. I would be torn but could see them lose Kiriloff and not having it impact them too much in the future since Kepler and Buxton look set for a while as does Rosario. They would still have Larnach to step in and they have other guys coming up in the next two to three years to offset anything lost for outfield depth. It is certainly something they could afford to do. Whether it is the RIGHT thing to do or not I am not sure.
  19. Thanks for the link. I really liked this statement form the article. "The star of this deal is Miami’s scouting department, on both the pro (which likely knew the background on Diaz) and amateur (which found Vallimont at a Division-II school in last years fifth round) side, even if Sergio Romo has a sizable impact on the postseason race. The Marlins flipped a rental reliever and recent fifth rounder for what might be a long term answer at first base." I think Fangraphs see's this the way I do. They are not declaring a winner of this trade just yet but Miami knew the Twins were going to have 40 man issues this summer and that there is a bit of a log jam at first base. They targeted a very good bat that should be able to help them pretty soon and only had to give up a 5th round pitcher(at least until we know the player to be named later) to do it. Marlins got what they wanted\needed out of this deal and are likely a stronger club for it. As much as I was down on Diaz until this year I really think he is in that Rosario mold of borderline All-Star caliber of player at his position. If he ever gets better strike zone discipline then I see him as likely All-Star caliber. He has a really sweet swing from what I have seen and has been a tough out all year this year. I like Vallimont but don't know a lot about him. Seems like a pretty short record to this point and from what I have read he needs a better third pitch but the guy could be good as well. Maybe not All-Star level but we need good pitchers in the system and he should help with that. We also get Romo, a player to named later and have one less player that needs rule V protection. So this deal works out pretty well for us as well.
  20. While I like the concept of adding Greinke I don't see this FO taking on A 30M per year contract. I am not saying they are cheap but so far it seems like they have been more about financial flexibility year to year rather than boxing themselves in to any future payroll constraints. I think the FO is more interested in extending their current young performing players(i.e. Kepler, Polanco). I think they prefer taking calculated risks on players they think are on the verge of a breakout and\or coming back from a down season maybe due to injury (i,e. Schoop, Cron, Pineda). I think if you add Greinke's salary it severely limits what they have been trying to do which is to prepare to keep our own players for as long as possible and make value moves in the off season. I know people will argue the money is there and it is but I think this FO is really looking to maximize the money spent in an efficient manner as possible (i.e, Performance value of the player per dollar). I don't think it is there in a Greinke deal. While i don't think it is impossible that the FO would go for Greinke IMO it is unlikely.
  21. Should remember the name Lewin Diaz as well. The kid has a sweet swing and easy power, has improved his defense and has a good eye at the plate. The Marlins got a good one so I hope Vallimont works out just as well for us.
  22. Always nice to see great pitching performances. Would be nice to have difference maker pitchers making their way to the MLB club. Really nice night for all the affiliates lets keep this up. Lots of fun when players are performing and winning as well.
  23. I guess I was looking more at his K rate and this fangraphs article earlier in the year https://blogs.fangraphs.com/nick-anderson-is-improbably-excellent/ It looks like he has regressed some since then but still would be nice to have.
  24. Initially the article only stated Romo in the trade and not Valimont or player to named later. I don't think that Diaz for Romo would have been a good trade. I deleted my post after more info was added. Nick Andersson would have been nice to have right now but the Marlins got him for a prospect who hasn't done much for us yet so if it would have been Romo for Diaz straight up we would have been fleeced two out of three IMO.
  25. Seems like kind of a savvy move by both FO's. Marlins get a big young bat that looks close to MLB ready and the Twins swap the bat for a very intriguing arm that doesn't need to be put on the 40 man anytime soon. On top of that the Marlins sweeten the pot by giving us Romo. Our FO accomplished two things with this trade. They get Bullpen help and they swap a strength 1st baseman Hitter for a weakness in the system which is Pitching. Too early to tell who got the best deal but this move really helps us in two ways so I give our FO the early edge on this one.
