  1. I think a case could be made that he was mismanaged in 2015 by spending all of his innings in the minors rather than leaving a few in the tank for a September call up or been available for the bullpen games played for the last week of August. He was ready for it all year and the FO made a decision to not manage his innings as such. I think he and the team would have benefited having him available last year, and would have made this spring's rotation competition much more interesting.
  2. How do you accomplish this with a three man bench? Play Vargas at SS when Esco needs a break? Go to a 4 man bench and not carry a backup catcher? Edit: yeah what Jorgenwest said much better than I did
  3. we don't really know anything about either player. Being unfamiliar with the KBO, I hope it's more competitive than the CanAm league. Are you really going to platoon a guy you just dropped 18 mil on (12 mil plus whatever his annual salary is)? You can't really pick and choose the right situation if you are managing the every day DH, you throw him out there until he proves he can't hack it. I hope Park will be fantastic and all this will be forgotten. The truth is we don't know, and the Cola comp is not encouraging for me.
  4. hes 32 and never played a full season in the bigs, SSS alert? If you spend 12 mil to sign a AAAA first basemen, ouch
  5. good to hear that he is doing well, I miss his contributions here as well.
  6. The whole Moderator deal reminds me, what happened to Snepp? And I for one appreciate the realists on TD.
  7. Holy crap! Souhan used OPS in an article! I demand RBIs to mentioned at least once in a newspaper article!
  8. Fantastic post but my feeling is go scorched earth rebuild or go big in free agency, don't half-ass it. If with a straight face you can look at 2012-14 and say the Twins needed to spend real big to not be a really poor team, why can't you look at 2015 and say, if they had put good dough into 2 relief pitchers in the offseason they would have had a real shot at the playoffs? What's the threshold for hindsight 20/20 rule? I think you could repeat that meme again in 2016
  9. It has been a repeating theme around here that Murphy is as reputed a good to very good fielding catcher, and .734 OPS or better hitter. I tend to overrate Murphy a bit too in assuming the Twins will get Murphy's to-date ceiling as a floor. the guy is in some ways a "prospect" in that he doesn't have much ML seasoning, but hope springs eternal. I know he may not turn out as advertised, but man I hope he surpasses expectations in every way in 2016 and runs away with the job.
  10. Fantastic event! Being a bald guy winning a Harry's Shaving kit was icing on the already delicious cake.
  11. Great event, Laudner was fantastic, Pags killed it, and Meatsauce was a fun and entertaining host.
  12. just a guess, but LEN probably agrees with you too. I really enjoyed the article and hope the Twins are successful, it would just be great if Abad were the supplemental addition and not the centerpiece to the offseason bullpen revival. Maybe I'm reading the tea leaves wrong and the centerpiece is Burdi or maybe there's still a trade in the works.
  13. Hard to argue, thanks for your clarification/research into my wild claim. It further cements my opinion that this rotation will most likely be pretty poor unless the GM is willing to put young guys in front of established guys regardless of contract.
  14. while true, he won't be "good". He's had one good season in his career and bless him, he capitalized on it. He isn't capable of repeating. I agree with Mike, worst case scenario is also best case scenario, Nolasco is mediocre and therefore untradeable and uncuttable, and he blocks Jose Berrios and/or Duffey and/or May from the rotation all season long.
  15. all true, but to gain the HOF cred, he needs to continue playing for several more years, and I think he will play for 5+ years. He'll have played as much or more as a first baseman, than as a catcher. Is Joe's current performance HOF worthy? Do you expect it to improve enough to be HOF worthy again. I have my doubts. If he had retired rather than play through the concussion and transitioned to first base, he would have been a lock.
  16. I really enjoyed the article. I'm less optimistic about the season because I think TR and PM will stick with the veteran pitchers (starters and relievers) rather than let the young guys with upside prove that they are more than upside.
  17. I can't get my phone to cooperate so... "Like" "old nurse Jan 01 2016 06:32 AM Thrylos, on 31 Dec 2015 - 6:58 PM, said: Too early to even start thinking about the Twins' lineup. And the stories they are spreading about Sano have him at LF instead of RF (with that overhang etc...) Pretty certain that the Twins will make changes by opening day... It is just baseball dreaming on a winter day. As John Phillips wrote all those years ago, "I'd be safe and warm if Nolasco were in LA.Baseball dreaming on such a winter day". Something like that."
  18. Bingo, Atlanta would have been foolish not to take that deal, and the Twins as well, but that's point. You'd be foolish not to take it because it's a crazy over pay and that doesn't happen very often. GMs that too often over pay in trades don't usually stay GM for very long.
  19. I do agree with several posters that depth is critical to the Twins success, but the current roster construction problem is the 4/5 depth pitchers are on multi-year contracts. Which is why I get the idea of trading Gibson. It's just a little misguided. Don't trade for relief pitchers, sign them in FA or develop them. I wouldn't trade Gibson unless I was knocked of my feet. The rotation needs to get younger and better and trading your youngest/best veteran starter doesn't help. unless it is for a younger/betterer starter and brings with him one of Nolasco/Hughes to be offloaded, but that won't happen.
  20. especially since he isn't currently on the roster
  21. tough to prove this in the bullpen
  22. we're not talking about pitchers. Ya you're right , k/9 is a great way to measure a pitchers individual effectiveness in ways that ground outs are more of a team effort. We're talking about hitters. If your getting a 250 batting average, would you rather Plouffe and Mauer who hit into double plays 25% of the time, or Sano and ABW who K 25% of the time? I prefer the latter, esp w/ the power that accompanies.
  23. Really encouraging answers from ABW. While I would be tickled pink if he cut down his k rate, at least ks don't become double plays
  24. I have no problem with Milone, he's fine, but the rotation is chock full of "Milones". The rotation is much better with a May instead instead of "a Milone", but the other three "Milones" have much larger contracts that will be much harder to shed
  25. the Twibs aren't unique in this regard. Every team has prospects that are done right and wrong and most of the time you don't really know until it's apparent to everyone else too. Especially mid and lower market teams of a decade ago who's main strategy is draft and develop. I think Park was had for a song, for a reason. The Redsox supposedly had a good long look at him and didn't bid more than 12.9 M for a guy that hit over 50 homers a year 2 years in a row? I can only hope Bruno can work wonders helping the guy get caught up to MLB pitching.
