  1. passing through waivers means nothing. IF it means anything, it means teams thought he could be had, but it might take extra haggling and they might run out of time in the waiver period.
  2. "Icky" Ricky Nolasco signed a 49 mil contract. Had to trade away a prospect to get his equivalent back. Stuck with that garbage for 4 years. I'll take the 2 years of Verlander, given the choice.
  3. losing Santiago and Gibson, they can do both
  4. Dozier increases 3 mil. They won't offer Escobar arb. They might sign him off open market but not at 4 mil. My guess is opening day utility guy is vielma or free agent I haven't been able to find the payroll spreadsheet lately. Is it still there? That was nifty
  5. they should grow their payroll a bit too
  6. 2 years 56 mil is steep, but it's only two years. If you think Helickson is taking less than 3 years 17 mil per year (51 mil) on his next contract, I'd like to se evidence. I'd take the shorter contract every time.
  7. I'd like Gee and Gibson to switch roles. They both have earned it.
  8. Miss Vanimal likes you for you. So should her parents. I met my in laws at a restaurant, was myself. 12 years later my wife swears they like me more than their own daughter
  9. i like your plan but i'd add at least one reliever, maybe 2 thatd pretty much a high end setup man as well.
  10. Pythag run differential according to bbref puts them at 55 wins, which more or less fills the gap. It must be the manager and all that veteranness
  11. indeed, 68 run differential on defense is huge. 4.45 runs per game scored in 2016. 4.63 runs per game in 2017. that's only 28 runs on 162 games, 3 wins.
  12. Defense is big, but 68 runs differential on defense is what, 7 wins Pythag? Where did the other 10 wins come from?
  13. 10 starting pitchers for how this club was prepared last year is really tough, however 10 starting pitchers in a season is no "monumental task". https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.mlb.com/163495284-mlb-teams-need-starting-pitching-depth.amp.html In 2015 on average, a ball club trotted out 10.9 starters. From 2012 to 2015 40 teams made the post season. Those 40 teams has on average 39 starts per season by pitchers not in the opening day rotation. The Twins aren't breaking new ground. They're getting better quality pitching from the reserves than seasons past, but it's not alarming at all. By the way, the one team in 2015 that used 16 starters; the Dodgers, who were playoff contenders and have built their strength largely on a strong farm club (and huge cash).
  14. If he wanted to be around his parents and kids, why did he play baseball? And why did he buy a house in Florida? Could be right but some of your logic has holes in it. I'm not so sure the FO would go with that model. I have no idea what Joe is thinking, but I might take a longer term deal somewhere else just to be able to keep playing. Money might not mean much, but contract length might mean a lot.
  15. at 7:45 Micky Mental has please don't call 'em the Twinkies by the Hold Steady
  16. well done! So funny that "You're killing me Smalls!"
  17. Hi John - Happy anniversary. Great podcast as always. It might have been easier to follow if the podcast had been edited together in the order it was recorded with the disclaimer at the beginning, sorry we might repeat ourselves on the radio portion. Otherwise, one of my favorite discussions of yours while on the air. I do enjoy a lively debate, sometimes the radio aspect can serve to tone down what would become more spirited debate were there a couple of beers consumed first.
  18. right now there's 3 bench players and two of them are short stops. If you wait a couple weeks I'll bet there's at least one more bench bat plus Garver and still have the Giminez check valve.
  19. Kevin Jepsen and Ricky Nolasco were very moderately priced signings. Low risk, low investment, low reward, low fan morale, low win total. lets try a new approach I mean sign a couple of high end guys who have he track record to lock down the back of the bullpen. Rely on Shaggy et al. for the front of the bullen and if they take off and take over the back of the bullpen, they are that much better off and that much deeper.
  20. Rosters expand in two weeks, might as well hold on to Giminez as the check valve. In September, bring up Garver, let Giminez rot on the bench, and give Garver all the at-bats that Giminez got, plus rotate hi around DH, First and maybe a spot start or two in RF. If he continues to hit like a maniac, get him 4-5 games per week. If he struggles, just back up catcher to see what you got for 2018. I don't get the certainty that he'll do anything, but I do get the sentiment that he should get a chance. I also don't think that the FO should put them selves at risk to only have one catcher, were they to make the Wild card and one of the two gets injured. Cant go into the wild card with Escobar as your only backup option.
