  1. we haven't really been through a "full" off season with this FO. I don't believe we can be certain. Under the TR/WS regime I would agree with this. Now, not sure
  2. I think it depends on what you want from your 5th starter. I've seen multiple posts that Colon is the "perfect 5th starter". Maybe it's trolling, but seems pretty honest. I'm in the camp that the 5th starter should provide youth and upside, but lack polish. It should be the spot in the rotation that creates depth for the future. That is clearly not the only sentiment on the board. IMO Mejia is the perfect 5th starter. In the near future Gonsalves or Enn or Romero could be perfect 5th starters. I agree with you Brock, the FO needs to bring in front of the rotation help. Colon is a guy that you sign to the bigs mid season due to injury or sign on a minor league deal. Great guy to have on a minor league deal, but definitely not someone you WANT to rely on out of the shoot.
  3. the M word is 4 letters in these parts. http://www.citypages.com/news/phil-mackey-1500-espn-reporter-blasts-no-accountability-bloggers-on-twitter-gets-blasted-6545885
  4. Maybe Garver just had a bad game. it was his first MLB start behind the dish. Plenty of reason to be nervous. Reports were earlier this year that his glove has come a long way in the past couple years. Its hard to tell, maybe you're right and there's reason to be nervous. Maybe he just had a bad game.
  5. You are right, location and speed change is the key to both pitcher's success or lack thereof. That's a really fine line to walk. I trust Big Sexy more, but as evidenced by his stint in Atlanta, he may not be effective enough for a whole season at 45, he may not be effective for another start at 44. I hope he is effective, just not convinced that he will. Colon http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.aspx?playerid=375&position=P Pelfrey http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.aspx?playerid=5203&position=P
  6. Sorry, couldn't get both in the same post
  7. Happy to see Colon pitch well. He was needed at the time due to lack of depth. I pray he (or someone like him) is not needed as the 5th spot in the rotation needs to be for the young guys with options. We have an awfully low bar to be better than the recent rotation options of the past 6 years. "Your better than Mike Pelfrey" is quite the backhanded compliment. However the two do have similarities as only having "one stupid pitch". At some point Big Sexy will go the way of Big Pelf. Hoping he's not in a Twins unit when he does. I do hope he gets his last 4 wins for the 243 number
  8. Curtiss pitched a perfect 9th last night - 35
  9. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.beyondtheboxscore.com/platform/amp/2017/7/14/15955698/michael-brantley-indians-all-star-pull-power-joe-mauer Ok, we've overcome that obstacle. Still seems very clear that if Joe lifts a ball to left, he pops it up. The article is a good read, btw. As to the video of Joe pulling the home run, it was only one, and it was a year ago. I wish I could do a Parker, but I don't have either the computer expertise or baseball mechanics expertise, bit I'd like the answer too.
  10. i wish TR had given KV more leash while he was OPSing 1,000 too. Not sure how much difference it would make, but maybe given the chance last August and September things would be different in '17. On the other hand, how many chances does a guy get until you just accept that he's had some flukey hot streaks? I do like the Dozier comp. Doziers bat plays up well at 2nd base. First, not so much. Now cut down on his walks and don't really have enough currency. I agree with Thrylos. In the days of 13 man pitching staffs, roster flexibility with position players is critical. Vargas is very position inflexible, I don't think that will change.
  11. cinch is a joint between two pieces, so lead pipe cinch is a joint between two pieces of lead pipe. Synonym might be "lock"
  12. that and between Gibson, Santiago, Colon, and Belisle there's bound to be some pitching turnover on the 25/40 man.
  13. done and done! I refuse to give the strib money, even advertising clicks, especially for Souhan drivel
  14. The winning ways this season remind me of glorious seasons of the past. I can't help but think of Andy MacPhail and the two World Series he helped bring to our favorite franchise. In an article from SI in 1992, MacPhail spends some time talking about being a small market GM, and the premise of the article is how great of a GM he was for trading Viola for Tapani, Aguilara, and Erickson. https://www.si.com/vault/1992/03/30/126247/master-of-the-trade-when-it-comes-to-building-a-baseball-team-for-the-90s-andy-macphail-gm-of-the-twins-is-the-best-in-the-business The parallels are amazing. It seems like MacPhail tried to cultivate an image of a small market baseball team. It feels like that image still exists. Does this ghost of the past(who still looks younger than his successor) still frame how you make arguments over what Falvey and Levine should do with the roster of this ball club? Do you find yourself hoping the repeat of the pattern continues? I doubt the "great swindle" would ever happen again, but do you find yourself hoping that Levine can flip Santana for the next Tapani/Aguilara/Erickson?
  15. looks like Falvey reports to DSP. Ultimately JP, but I wonder how much of the decision making changes w/the new structure?
  16. Verlander has been a better pitcher in the AL than Shark in the NL as well as AL, for similar total contract, I'll taker Verlander Verlander 2016 137 ERA+ 10 K9 2.3 BB9 2017 111 ERA + 9 K9 3.6 BB9 Career 122 ERA+ 8.5 K9 2.7 BB9 Shark 2016 105 ERA+ 7.4 K9 2.4 BB9 2017 88 ERA+ 9.2 K9 1.3 BB9 Career 96 ERA+ 8.2 K9 2.7 BB9
  17. Verlander has pitched as well as Berrios this year. Having him on the roster this week would be like replacing Gibson with Berrios, like having two Berrios's on the roster. If Berrios were a free agent 20-25 mil per season for a decade would seem prettt reasonable to market. Therefore Verlander's Berrrios-like pitching at 28 mil doesn't bother me, and for only being 2 years, the risk of Verlanders age isn't so bad. Most every free agent is 32-35 and if you sign them on the open market, 3-4 years is usually min length for any decent pitcher.
  18. prospects are just prospects. I'd take another Berrios on this roster. Imagine trying to sign Berrios today on the open market.... 200 mil easy over 8 years... the money isn't that crazy. so make a trade for the push, it's only 2 years. For the Twins there's not as much to get stuck holding the bag at the end.
  19. very true, 2 year extension at reasonable extension rate would prolly be a deal breaker unless the prospects given up were almost E level minor league fodder
  20. with a guaranteed contract, annual rate matters less than total. Hellickson prolly won't go on another one year deal. More likely 3-4 years at 15-17 mil per season. The longer the contract, the more likely the contract diminishes in value. And they can sign a 10 mil reliever too and still be in the 130-135 mil salary range for 2018-19 years As spycake said, i just assumed we all agreed Verlander is better now when the Twins need the help
  21. im fine with Gee, but Melville, yeesh
  22. depends on the value of the extension... ML min... maybe, then it's Icky Ricky contract
