  1. i am not a contract lawyer, but if I were a GM with a $3mil contract with a player, terms will be followed strictly for both parties involved. Articles states that the contract was voided due to undisclosed medical condition. There were questions about Sano’s actual age which is how the Twins got him under market. Teams were scared off by the risk. I would not fault an organization for strict contract adherence.
  2. if he didn’t disclose a vision issue, what else didn’t he disclose? If the FO knew about the vision issue, might they have taken a different approach in negotiations? It may not be about the vision issue, it might be about the terms of the contract. I do feel sorry for the kid and hope he’s ok, and hope that he can finagle another mlb contract. I wish him well, but I get why the contract was voided.
  3. as I said, you had me. I agree that the Twins shouldn’t trade for Stanton because his contract would preclude the FO from going after pitching while the offense is less of a concern than pitching. My quibble is that Stanton is somehow not worth his contract. He absolutely is worth it. He’s just a bad fit for this team.
  4. you had me until “clearly below top tier”. There’s too much talk over a “clearly below top tier” player on that gigantic contract with a full no trade clause, that he is not considered by many/most GMs as “top tier” https://www.fanragsports.com/heyman-giants-and-cards-favorites-but-many-want-stanton/ He’s 28 and posted a 6.9 fWAR.
  5. if it’s Lackey or Bartolo, Lackey would be not cause for pitchforks and torches for the 4-5th spot in the rotation on a 1 year deal if the front of the rotation gets addressed. I’d prefer the second piece be more of the 3-4 years 10-12 mil per season type. More of a mid rotation piece, but if #1 is Darvish that isn’t happening. If it’s Cobb or Lynn or a trade maybe a mid rotation addition is feasible.
  6. Please, oh please can Levine aim higher for pitching than John Lackey? Puh-lease with sugar on top! Bench bat type? Fine, prefer better fielding than Werth so as to keep the DH spot open for Mauer and Sano, but he’d be fine in a part time role. But Pitching, especially starting pitching where there’s two solid feel good when it’s their turn in the rotation that the front of the rotation needs fortification, not the back.
  7. https://www.fanragsports.com/heyman-twins-could-target-top-tier-free-agent-starters/ Heyman doesn’t provide direct quotes, but seems pretty convincing/convinced himself
  8. depends if you can come to agreement with his current team and posting fees and all that. I agree it would be best to go get Otani as the best young talent available. However if you can’t get that deal done with his current team, might as well benefit from the situation somehow. Betances would be a very good consolation prize
  9. Wins, ERA,and “Starter Saves” are team metrics, not individual accomplishment metrics. He won other awards and was a good pitcher on a good team doesn’t clear that threshold for me.
  10. id move to Japan for 2 years if i received a guaranteed 2 mil to do it. 2 mil is life changing money for me. If I were a MLB player, it depends on how realistic I thought my chances were that I could get at least a mil in MLB contract. 2 mil isn’t exactly life changing for an MLB veteran. My recollection is the players rights aren’t usually sold unless the player has already agreed.
  11. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/259650658/mlb-qualifying-offer-rules-explained/ Not third round pick. Their Third overall pick if they received revenue sharing. If they exceeded the luxury tax threshold, signing team would lose second and 5th pick. So first pick is protected but first round comp pick could be the second pick, and the second round pick might be forfeited. A team that fell in between loses second overall pick and 500k in international draft pool. The penalty is less severe than previous, but not trivial. For players around that 50 mil contract range with a QO at 17.4 mil, it might serve to suppress Cobb or Lynn’s value a bit. I’d be supportive of Falvine signing Cobb, or Lynn, or both. Being a recipient of revenue sharing it will impact the Twins less if they do exceed 50 mil and the second signing would forfeit their third best pick after their previous third best is forfeited. Or maybe they can sign one or both for 4 years 49 mil or less, maybe one would sign 3 years 40 mil. Cobb and Lynn are both 30, 3 years would leave them 33 when they go after their next contracts. 3 years of Gold Glover Buxton begins them and still having career horizon in front of them could be enticing. Pipe dream maybe.... but maybe not
  12. because QO I bet he doesn’t break 50 mil.
  13. game day bench coach is 2nd in command to the manager and offers advice and feedback to the manager. They fill in when the manager can’t such as when the manager gets tossed. the bench coach usually also has other coaching duties such as some kind of position or endurance coaching duties.
  14. https://rayscoloredglasses.com/2015/05/14/tampa-bay-rays-mailbag-how-bad-is-derek-shelton/ I think Shelton could be a good bench coach(hitting coach too). I thought this was interesting
  15. in 2018 May or Romero could be a top 25 MLB starting pitcher for the Twins? Having that upside, and having that upside in 2018 are two different things. The window for the core to compete is finite. Can’t wait for someday
  16. Interesting that MLBTR has the Twins as possible suitors for pretty much every pitcher in the top 50 list. Seems like a prediction for an active free agency period for Falvine
  17. this I buy. Initially it sounded like it was a weight issue causing the surgery, which I would vehemently disagree with. As Chief said, he may have a struggle with his weight and conditioning if he can’t follow his normal offseason routine. Here’s hoping there’s a plan in place for that as well and he hits the ground running in February
  18. What are Falvey and Levine going to bulk up spend by 24 to 44 million (96 mil up to 120 to 140 mil) on, if not an impact starter? Starting rotation still has woefully little depth or ceiling. Yes they need an impact reliever too, but it seems possible they already have them in the minor league system.
  19. he has shown the ability in the past to be a good starting pitcher, 4-5 innings at a crack, but doesn’t coming back from Tommy John give you some pause? He was never going to be an “Ace” but maybe a lights out bullpen arm or 3-4 starter. Could he improve last year’s staff? Absolutely Will he do so opening day? 50-50 at best. Will he put in a 150 inning season? No chance
  20. this is the very essence of the importance of sample size. It’s the foundation of statistical analysis. You will always find variance like this inside of a season among all players. This just Gibson. His season on the whole was in line with his career. You take the good with the bad.
  21. Having 5 starting pitchers better than league average xFIP isn't realistic? The average team uses in excess of 10 starters in a season. Sure the bulk of your starts come from the opening day 5, but if you expect to be a "good team" I would think 4/5 of the starting 5 would be better than league average. According to Fangraphs, Gibson's FIP was 4.85 vs league average 4.4. Better than Gibby still has some room to get up to league average.
  22. sign or trade for 2 starters and a reliever, and 2 or 3 of Jay, Chargois, Burdi, Romero, Gonsalves and May become significant contributors and you’ve turned over half your pitching staff. You can make significant improvement when you turn over half your pitching staff
