  1. as Mr Brooks said, they need 2 rotation pieces, one immediate front of the rotation like Darvish that is clearly prioritized by the FO, and another 2-3 starter type. It’s not clear yet by the FO’s posture, but I doubt the FO has the budget available to sign Darvish (or maybe Arrieta) AND sign a second tier Cobb/Lynn and below that tier in free agency, it doesn’t clearly improve over Mejia/Gibson or compete with Santana Erv is in the twighlight of his career, last year was a career year for him. It’s not realistic to expect the same in 18. I expect him to regress a bit and get passed up by an improving Berrios in 18... so that second acquisition should hopefully push a healthy and realativly effective Erv to 4th
  2. as others have said, why not both? Waiting it out could hurt Darvish’s value, so maybe he could be signed for 4/120 if his other suitors get impatient.
  3. According to Passan, Cole is expected to be traded within the week. Pirates are looking for Torres from the Yankees, but they don’t want to part with their prized SS prospect. If there’s anything Levine has as trade chips it’s SS prospects. Can he be the one Passan mentions as the team to swoop in to pry away Gerrit Cole? https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-yankees-continue-push-gerrit-cole-pittsburgh-expects-deal-soon-030645878.html
  4. the +? would probably have to be Gonsalvez and I'm not sure that's enough.
  5. I was going to like this until I read it 3 times. ;-) Belisle seemed to pitch better as the closer than he did as the fireman - I think you are on to something with the clean inning assumption. Timing, frequency, number of pitches thrown, how many times did the guy get up to warm in the bullpen without throwing a pitch.... all can have an impact.
  6. I don’t think Garver and Gordon get that done. Fish don’t have to trade him away. Agreed on the assessment of the Marlins hitting. Kinda baffled the Marlins didn’t go the other way and go hard after acquiring pitching.
  7. because catchers that can hit don’t break the bank?
  8. If that timing worked like you laid out, it would be pretty sweet - that's quite a tightrope walk
  9. I don't think the Twins have the prospect capital to go after both Realmuto and improve the pitching staff. Pitching is a higher priority for me.
  10. indeed, the most expensive garage sale I've ever seen
  11. does signing Darvish move the perception needle from middle of the pack to legit WS or Pennant contender? If no, what else needs to happen this offseason? If yes, what happened to the narative relative to the division and league? I don’t think Darvish alone changes the narrative for 2018, but certainly makes them more competitive.
  12. 80-85 wins in a league with 2 100 game winners and 6 60 game winners of which 2 are in their division. They could conceivably get more than half their wins against two teams.
  13. I would hope Berrios will take a step forward in 2018 and expect a 36-37 year old Santana would have some back end of career decline. Pineda could come back strong from TJ this year too. Archer Berrios Pineda (if he comes back in 18 to pitch in the bp) Santana Romero
  14. the cash was only 4.5 mil to even put the swap. Total salaries swapped was 50 mil in 2018 for 23 mil in 18 and 23 mil in 19
  15. Braves trade Kemp to the Dodgers for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Culberson and cash. Gonzalez is already DFA’d. https://mobile.twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/942116470875676672
  16. its not a “bad” signing, i just don’t believe Falvine will raise the bar. No evidence to suggest either way, but Falvine expected more from the prospect relievers than he got last year. What’s changed?
  17. pitchers and catchers report Feb 13. Considering the grousing is 90% pitching related and the short supply in the FA class, I see it warranted. Rodney has already been anointed closer. If that doesn’t scream “done with relievers”, I don’t know what does. I guess they could acquire a setup man, but I was hoping for a bigger step up.
  18. In the ESPN article below, MLB has begun a trend back towards disparity. Teams have begun taking a more clearly defined rebuild/push to World Series contention. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/21769342 It’s not clear to me where Falvine really see their team. Much like the Marlins, the Twins have a very good hitting side of the team and need help on the pitching side. With the winter meetings concluded. What are the indications? How do you read the tea leaves? Is it still realistic to get Darvish and does that change the narrative in context to the disparity of the league?
  19. as I understand it, you can’t mix the pools, so they still have 1.9 mil to spend this year and about 3 mil left for July 2018
  20. is it easy to cut ties when your bullpen is in shambles? If the Yankees or Indians made this move, Rodney is just another guy. As things sit with the Twins right now, Rodney isn’t just another guy. Next man up is a much bigger hole relatively speaking.
  21. it depends, if this is the only reliever signed I’ll be upset. If they get another reliever I’m ok, if not a bit underwhelmed
  22. i agree with your argument. I’m not yet ready to crown Falvine as king. They are doing well, maybe very good. Not exactly crushing it. Don’t quite agree that last trade deadline was a blunder. The players traded away probably wouldn’t have made a big enough impact to really be a blunder. It may have been the wake up call the team needed to turn the season around. The team is better now than it was before the trade.
  23. I had this thought too... but on second thought, maybe this tact is better. These trades happened in very short succession. Seems like Falvine might be pitting these two teams against each other, not giving either one too much greater advantage over the other. Promoting an arms race could leave both teams worse off in the long run, trading away multiple assets to keep ahead of the other. By not picking a winner, Falvine can let a market play out and hope they both trade away more resources in the process.
  24. agreed, need to wait on Mauer until he offseason as he should be a 10-12 mil player not an 18-19 mil per year player. If not spending on FA when our payroll is 95 mil and dropping, when?
