  1. He minds me of a right handed Hector Santiago, only lefties get away with more than righties do. I'm not a fan of Santiago either
  2. indeed it does but the teams make their money from cable contracts. Currently streaming video is not an option for in market consumers, and the teams don’t get a large portion of their revenue from streaming.
  3. I think a very related market issue is that cable tv will soon go the way of CDs and DVDs, and VHS and Cassette tapes before them. They are all becoming obsolete by a changing consumption of media. The model of big cable tv contracts and bundled channel packages must change to an online al a carte model of some kind.
  4. There must be some level of collusion on both the players and the owners side. Someone would've blinked by now. That being said, I think the greatest influence on the owners side 1) teams on the winning trend are trying to beat the luxury tax ahead of what is expected to be a banner off season next year for free agents 2) teams on the losing trend are restocking the prospect list and waiting for an uptrend to make a move On the players side 1) High end players are trying to wait out the market that may not come to them 2) next tier are waiting out the first tier as the market setters 3) winning trend teams are filling their gaps with the third tier of players that aren't waiting out the market.
  5. agreed, I think the Twins should wait it out.
  6. it was a miscommunication via a medium limited to 140 (or whatever number) characters. I can see why that might happen. I don’t read too much into it. Maybe the “term” missed was really “informal offer pending clearing salary”. Nothing’s moving so the Yanks moved on.
  7. Seems like the TWins might currently be high offer. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/latest-on-brewers-search-for-a-starter.html Looks like Darvish is holding out for a big player like the Cubs or Yankees to clear space and start a bidding war. Why would the Twins up their own ante? Just wait it out.
  8. This is way off subject, but i’ll try to circle back around to the topic... theres indirect monetary gain. People like sports and choose to live where there’s pro sports. The gains are real, just not directly related to the building. Direct public monetary gain is minimal. Sports franchises pay very little taxes compared to the gain they get from the publicly funded stadiums. Sports complexes create very few high paying jobs for non athletes, sports complexes create very few new small businesses. New bars and restaurants don’t open around ballparks, existing ones relocate, if at all. All of this to say the public expects a return on investment. The team gets a huge direct windfall from the public, and in return the public gets very little in directly returned tax revenue. The public expects a more competitive team to make the area more desirable to make the indirect return more impactful. Hence the social contract. It’s all implied. My implication is, so far the Twins have not lived up to their side of the bargain. It’s time to change that. Go get Darvish!
  9. ”could” doesn’t guarantee anything.
  10. every sports franchise has a social contract with the public, because of the public funding they receive. There is no direct monetary gain ever proven through building stadiums. The Metrodome was evidence. However sports provide some kind of desirable attributes to a community. People like to live in communities and root for their home team, so the public builds stadiums. The implication is the public buys the stadium to get a good sports product, to expand the tax base. Social contracts are implied contracts. The Packers are publicly owned. It’s not implied, there’s actual ownership.
  11. no that’s a contractual contract with the public.
  12. Imagine landing Darvish on a 6 year deal and Arrieta on a 1 year make good... not likely, but not impossible in this market
  13. that and Berrios and Mejia are the only two 2017 starters probable for ‘19. Still plenty of room for a long contract and get the minor league graduates a spot.
  14. agreed, the AL West and East have similar but not so pronounced disparity as well. With a couple injuries, East and West teams looking better right now, than the Tigers and Royals, could also compete for the bottom. I’m just not sure 90 games won guarantees an AL wildcard
  15. https://www.fanragsports.com/inside-baseball-mlb-notes-betts-arb-win-could-affect-others/ According to Heyman Dodgers are ambivalent towards resigning Darvish and the Cubs are low bid. Looks like the Twins and Brewers are highest offers but he isn’t getting the bidding war among the big players he was hoping for. Come on Levine! Make it happen
  16. Very good questions! I have no idea! My personal opinion is logos and mascots depicting groups of people is a slippery slope. People are more complicated than a catch phrase can describe. I’m not sure what kind of “ism” label to put on it, or even if one is appropriate. If Notre Dame decided to change their mascot, I’d support the change. There might be some historic context to the name that may or may not make it socially acceptable. Societies change. https://www.nd.edu/features/whats-in-a-name/
  17. 100% agreed. You can’t make blanket comparisons with people’s self identification. They are not the same. I was just trying to put the shoe on my own foot. I can never fully understand what another person goes through, but I can try to empathize.
  18. intention and outcome are different things. I'm not necessarily onboard with the outcome for all of these. There is an important distinction between proper names as an honor and classification or heritage names as an honor. What was once a "heritage" can become a "classification". I don't ever think of classification as an honor. classification is a quick solution to lumping people into buckets whether or not those people want to be in those buckets or agree with them. Are they necessarily "bad", no not always, but can be. Where I might choose to become an army infantryman, serve my country in the theatre of battle, and become a veteran, I might have been drafted and resent that classification. The intention is to honor, but is to the people in those groups? Does the intention matter? Do people "choose" to be Native American or American Indian? I'm not even really sure how to describe these people to get it right. All I know is, I would probably not find it an honor for someone to name a team "mathematically inclined white guys" or something like that. I never chose to be a "mathematically inclined white guy". So I support the idea behind moving away from that type of mascot and team naming.
  19. We need to return to the Nyköping staff. If it was good enough for 13th century Swedes, it’s good enough for me.
  20. depends on when you started counting. 7 days from Jan 24 is Jan 31. Last I checked it was Jan 28
  21. 7th Day Adventists worship on Saturday... just sayinghttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh-day_Adventist_Church
  22. my brother in law does well for himself, I do too. It’s not about survival. It’s about comfort.
  23. i get Archer and his relative youth and contract sitch. Why Arrieta over Darvish?
  24. heavily incentive based contracts are unusual for top end players. The MLBPA is very powerful and the owners bring in tons of tv money. The players association and players agents know it and do a very good job of taking advantage. I for one am very thankful that only 10-15% of my income is incentive based. I choose a stable salary at the loss of top end opportunity. My brother in law is in sales and his rate is flipped, 10-15% salary. He has years where he makes twice what I do. He also has years where he makes less than half. I couldn’t handle that kind of uncertainty.
