  1. Astudillo brought 5 gloves and can play 3b, 1b, left, right field. The guy’s a freak and absolutely perfect 25th man. https://calltothepen.com/2018/01/29/minnesota-twins-intriguing-piece-willians-astudillo/
  2. agreed. Speculatively, this could also be Falvey admitting that the organization is still a bit too hands off when it comes to developing players that are already major leaguers. Gardy used to whine about minor leaguers coming up unprepared for the bigs, the last few years of his tenure were a complete joke in terms of fundamentally sound baseball. Molitor’s teams are currently no better in terms of fundamentally sound baseball. It’s on the individuals to put in the work, but... It’s also on the organization to put its players in the best position to succeed. That’s systematic consistency, and it’s still not clear to me that it’s in place. I think real organizational change is currently in process. Again, what do I know? This could all be more of the same and we’ll never see the Twins develop another star ever again....
  3. I think you are on to something here. http://m.startribune.com/twins-send-miguel-sano-to-minors-after-loss-to-tigers/485595781/ I characterize Sano going to A+ ball as a resset. I imagine the conversation with Sano to have been “Look Miguel, you are extremely important to the organization and I’m not sure where things got off course, but we need to correct course. We can get you the best support in Ft Myers so you can get your strength in your legs back and your swing mechanics back in alignment” Falvey describes it as a reset, and I think it’s a reset from how Sano was managed by the old regime to how he will be managed going forward. I’m still in Sano’s corner despite my feelings about the offseason allegations. My hope for this young man is that 2017-2018 is a period that he can learn and grow from, and come out on the backside a better person and better player. It’s really difficult to make that kind of transformation without support and personal conviction. I think Sano has the personal conviction part. No one gets to the MLB without it. It appears that the support part from the Twins is changing and I think (hope) for the better.
  4. The Twins still have control of Mejia for 4 years, and is already an effective 4th/5th starter. The need for the rotation was real and is still there as Bert is coming up. Nunez was sign on a free agent deal, which was no guarantee he was coming back to the Twins. That was a very good trade and one that Falvine should be looking to replicate if possible with every expiring contract on the team.
  5. I’m unsure of Polanco sticking at SS. I’m unsure of Sano sticking at 3rd. I’m unsure of Gordon sticking at SS. If Dozier doesn’t turn things around in a hurry, I don’t know if he can be extended the QO, for fear he would take it. Morrison will not be back. Can’t count on Castro for 19 as a starter. Mauer appears to still be suffering from concussions... Right now Sano looks like he could be first base/DH in 19 and Polanco/Gordon are pretty solid at 2nd and utility. With a world of questions at SS and 3B, it would be nice to have a backup plan locked in. God knows what this infield would be like without Escobar right now. If I can’t extend Escobar by the deadline, it would be really hard to trade him away then, but you almost have to, as he’s the only expiring contract they have that will return anything of value.
  6. Royce Lewis is 3 years from debut. What relevance is he?
  7. Kyle Gibson’s first Arb settlent was 2.9 mil. Second 5.2 mil, his third is upcoming and he’s having a really good year, he’ll pull down 10 mil in his final year. Total Arb earnings 18 mil roughly Assuming similar performance and health for Romero as a Super 2 would mean starting significantly higher than 2.9 mil, double per the chart I referenced before, plus a 4th year of Arb. I used 5 mil as a starting point, but it could be 6 or more. Keuchel got 7.2 in his first Arb year... 5 mil plus 7 mil plus 10 plus 20 is very plausible. Pie in the sky optimism 7 plus 10 plus 15 plus 30 isn’t impossible. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/01/arbitration-records-starting-pitchers-2.html
  8. agreed, it’s cumulative not exponential, but Super 2’s start higher and starting pitchers tend to be higher paid. It does all depend on health and performance, but avoiding Super2 status assumes the best case, right? https://www.amazinavenue.com/2013/3/11/4080186/mets-travis-darnaud-super-two-opening-day
  9. and it’s 5 mil year 1, plus 5 mil plus Arb raise year two, plus 5 mil plus plus Arb raise year 3, AND 5 mil plus plus plus Arb raise year 4. Its more like 30 to 40 mil or more over 4 years (15 mil 4th year of Arb plus 5 mil x3 as Base line) if healthy and decent. If your having conversation about risking Super 2 status, you’ve already got a decent major league pitcher on your hands. In isolation, 8 to 10 mil per season isn’t the end of the world. Hopefully if your farm system is any good, this situation happens every year or two. You could have 3-6 players flirting with Super 2 over the course of several years all accumulating additional payroll that with some careful planning a GM can avoid and use that payroll to fill gaps with free agents.
  10. none of Santana, May or Pineda are even close to healthy yet. Let’s cross these bridges when we get to them individually....
  11. if Molly lost clubhouse, I would have thought it was weeks ago
  12. Fantastic approach Walt. I laud your effort, but agree with spycake. We’re looking for data points suggesting logic, when the basis for decision making is unwritten. If the rules for the game are clearly documented, but the rules for this scenario are adhered to as code but not documented, we’re looking for logic where none exists. It’s illogical to add unwritten rules to a written rule book. It’s illogical to have a moral code that says verbally, I guess, “play the game the right way”, “sportsmanship is ultimate” and “if you take offense to the other team, you should throw at them”. Molitor is a Savvy guy; he’s not going come right out and say he ordered the Profar plunking. However I can recall referring to these types of “rules” by the players , especially Dozier, and Molitor during Molitors tenure way more than I can recall during Gardy or TK’s tenures. Maybe it’s recently bias, but man it feels like Molly preaches from the unwritten gospel more than other managers.
  13. yeah, I suppose anyone is available for the right price. I doubt you’ll get much for him now, when the most you got for him last time was one single pitcher who seemed injury prone/ready at the time and ended up needing TJ.
  14. thats irrelevant. The statement was “I wouldn’t have let him hit with RISP” to which I responded “who would you pinch hit for him?” The move you would make a week from now has no bearing on today’s game. Dozier has been bad, I would totally bench him for Polanco next week, but there’s zero depth to just get rid of him.
  15. Is Magill taking Romero’s spot in the rotation? If not does he go to AAA to make room for Mejia?
  16. ended game winning run at the plate. Profar was absolutely right to steal. Shame on Molitor.... he needs to learn how to play the game the right way. Clearly he’s forgotten.
  17. Great analogy, you should coach Gleeman
  18. Reed and Pressly both pitched, and have pitched Thurs/Fri. Duke hasn’t pitched since Tuesday, Belisle pitches yesterday and the day before. He’d better go three days in a row...
  19. why swing? Because the pitches would have to catch more of the plate more frequently
  20. or a walk comes at 4 balls but gets you two bases. That would take away the strategy of trying to get the double play, and force pitching to good hitters.
