    10 starting pitchers for how this club was prepared last year is really tough, however 10 starting pitchers in a season is no "monumental task". https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.mlb.com/163495284-mlb-teams-need-starting-pitching-depth.amp.html In 2015 on average, a ball club trotted out 10.9 starters. From 2012 to 2015 40 teams made the post season. Those 40 teams has on average 39 starts per season by pitchers not in the opening day rotation. The Twins aren't breaking new ground. They're getting better quality pitching from the reserves than seasons past, but it's not alarming at all. By the way, the one team in 2015 that used 16 starters; the Dodgers, who were playoff contenders and have built their strength largely on a strong farm club (and huge cash).

    Hi John - Happy anniversary. Great podcast as always. It might have been easier to follow if the podcast had been edited together in the order it was recorded with the disclaimer at the beginning, sorry we might repeat ourselves on the radio portion. Otherwise, one of my favorite discussions of yours while on the air. I do enjoy a lively debate, sometimes the radio aspect can serve to tone down what would become more spirited debate were there a couple of beers consumed first.

    Kevin Jepsen and Ricky Nolasco were very moderately priced signings. Low risk, low investment, low reward, low fan morale, low win total. lets try a new approach I mean sign a couple of high end guys who have he track record to lock down the back of the bullpen. Rely on Shaggy et al. for the front of the bullen and if they take off and take over the back of the bullpen, they are that much better off and that much deeper.

    to be fair, during the 6 game winning streak, only Erv went 6 innings. 5 of 6 were 5 inning starts or fewer. That's a ton of over exposure. The bullpen was due for a dud. Here's hoping it's only one.

    i think the window won't truly open until after JM and BD's contracts expire. The holes in the pitching staff are too big and too abundant to fill in one offseason. If Falvine had begun filling those holes last offseason, maybe there would be a chance to really compete in 2018.

    I find that the older I get, the more/better equipped I become to cope with grief and adversity. He's still a young man, and may not have as much experience with such things. I don't know that any of this is the case, and human beings are more complex than this, but I can see how this could be one of many contributing factors.

    agreed, but I have doubts that Pohlad could be convinced of that argument. Cutting him means there's no chance of recuperating any of that value. Maybe the odds are low, but not impossible

    do you really think it's possible Pohlad eats 26 mil for Hughes? I wouldn't have considered it, except they took on the dead contract for Garcia. Man that's an expensive oopsie/extension

    60 day DL is only in season. So you would lose his spot all off season. He's a 2019 guy at best, I'd try to sneak him through the rule 5 draft.

My interpretation "I'd really like to trade kintzler for more than has thus far been offered"

    The Twins took on Garcia's salary in the trade. Might the Twins keep that salary (and some/most/all of Santana's salary to increase value of prospect return? Would it actually accomplish that?

    I liked your ramblings Seth, your ramblings are more coherent than my composed offerings. I disagree somewhat, in that the Twins cannot stand pat. I don't think the Dodgers series changes any of it. The Twins need to continuously improve, regardless of current situation. I don't think this team has to full on "Sell" to improve for 2018 at the trade deadline. I do believe that Levine could trade some a couple of assets to improve the ML bullpen, and trade some major leaguers to improve the near ready prospect pipeline, maybe a wash in talent, but stabilizing pitching could help this team significantly to reduce the blowups and reliance on a 13 man pitching staff. One or two relievers could still mean all the difference in the world to a push for the wild card as that could lengthen the bench and give Molitor the flexibility to use his whole bullpen. World series contenders? no? Relevant to the division? absolutely, and need to stay that way
