  1. i agree with your argument. I’m not yet ready to crown Falvine as king. They are doing well, maybe very good. Not exactly crushing it. Don’t quite agree that last trade deadline was a blunder. The players traded away probably wouldn’t have made a big enough impact to really be a blunder. It may have been the wake up call the team needed to turn the season around. The team is better now than it was before the trade.
  2. I had this thought too... but on second thought, maybe this tact is better. These trades happened in very short succession. Seems like Falvine might be pitting these two teams against each other, not giving either one too much greater advantage over the other. Promoting an arms race could leave both teams worse off in the long run, trading away multiple assets to keep ahead of the other. By not picking a winner, Falvine can let a market play out and hope they both trade away more resources in the process.
  3. agreed, need to wait on Mauer until he offseason as he should be a 10-12 mil player not an 18-19 mil per year player. If not spending on FA when our payroll is 95 mil and dropping, when?
  4. i forgot he still has an option. Hate to burn it in a recovery effort. It’d be nice to keep it in your pocket in case he’s still not 100% next year, worst case scenario, though he’s apparently throwing 100 so good sign. Good stuff Thrylos
  5. I'd think if he starts the season on the DL, he'd go to Extended Spring training first, no?
  6. I don’t think Hughes will pitch for the Twins again, so if he does, it will surprise me. Low bar... but possible. Side note, what does a second TOS procedure mean? They didn’t remove a second rib, did they?
  7. as a starter, k rate aggregates to more Ks over a season. He’s absolutely more valuable as a starter if he can get healthy and stay healthy.
  8. here's a couple good links - looks like Jaime Garcia is the poster child and Josh Becket is what to expect. https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2015/7/1/8859137/thoracic-outlet-syndrome-pitcher-effectiveness https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/pitchfx-forensics-matt-harvey-and-thoracic-outlet-syndrome/
  9. its semantics I guess, but with the aid of hindsight, they traded away a rental middle reliever (in most organizations) and a rental 4th starter. They got back two double A pitchers, an A ball pitcher, and int’l pool cap. Is that really a sell? It’s not like they traded away Dozier, Santana and Mauer
  10. to add, Garcia was a rental and was realistically going to add at most a win or two over a realistic replacement. Littel and Enns appear to have significant value to the depth of rotation for the 2018 MN Twins as the 6-7 or 7-8 guys and help avoid the Big Sexy type acquisitions. I see it more inspirational than not.
  11. If you could sign Darvish and Ohtanni, then trade Santana, I'd be OK with it. If you had to trade away Santana to open up the wallet first, my concern would be the last player standing without a chair and being forced into making a bad trade to give up too many prospects.
  12. Agreed with others thankful for TD and the mods. Thankful for the upcoming payroll flexibility and hopeful Falvine will make good use of it.
  13. LNP won a World Series with the Cardinals
  14. Do you think Thorpe gets moved to the Bull Pen to try to simplify/speed up his development plan?
  15. if it’s Lackey or Bartolo, Lackey would be not cause for pitchforks and torches for the 4-5th spot in the rotation on a 1 year deal if the front of the rotation gets addressed. I’d prefer the second piece be more of the 3-4 years 10-12 mil per season type. More of a mid rotation piece, but if #1 is Darvish that isn’t happening. If it’s Cobb or Lynn or a trade maybe a mid rotation addition is feasible.
  16. Please, oh please can Levine aim higher for pitching than John Lackey? Puh-lease with sugar on top! Bench bat type? Fine, prefer better fielding than Werth so as to keep the DH spot open for Mauer and Sano, but he’d be fine in a part time role. But Pitching, especially starting pitching where there’s two solid feel good when it’s their turn in the rotation that the front of the rotation needs fortification, not the back.
  17. Wins, ERA,and “Starter Saves” are team metrics, not individual accomplishment metrics. He won other awards and was a good pitcher on a good team doesn’t clear that threshold for me.
  18. in 2018 May or Romero could be a top 25 MLB starting pitcher for the Twins? Having that upside, and having that upside in 2018 are two different things. The window for the core to compete is finite. Can’t wait for someday
  19. What are Falvey and Levine going to bulk up spend by 24 to 44 million (96 mil up to 120 to 140 mil) on, if not an impact starter? Starting rotation still has woefully little depth or ceiling. Yes they need an impact reliever too, but it seems possible they already have them in the minor league system.
  20. he has shown the ability in the past to be a good starting pitcher, 4-5 innings at a crack, but doesn’t coming back from Tommy John give you some pause? He was never going to be an “Ace” but maybe a lights out bullpen arm or 3-4 starter. Could he improve last year’s staff? Absolutely Will he do so opening day? 50-50 at best. Will he put in a 150 inning season? No chance
  21. this is the very essence of the importance of sample size. It’s the foundation of statistical analysis. You will always find variance like this inside of a season among all players. This just Gibson. His season on the whole was in line with his career. You take the good with the bad.
  22. Having 5 starting pitchers better than league average xFIP isn't realistic? The average team uses in excess of 10 starters in a season. Sure the bulk of your starts come from the opening day 5, but if you expect to be a "good team" I would think 4/5 of the starting 5 would be better than league average. According to Fangraphs, Gibson's FIP was 4.85 vs league average 4.4. Better than Gibby still has some room to get up to league average.
  23. sign or trade for 2 starters and a reliever, and 2 or 3 of Jay, Chargois, Burdi, Romero, Gonsalves and May become significant contributors and you’ve turned over half your pitching staff. You can make significant improvement when you turn over half your pitching staff
