  1. Fantastic news. Twins open with the Orioles, 200 miles away. So of course I'm blacked out of the opening series. Between blackouts and spreading games over multiple individual streamers the league seems determined to make it as difficult as possible to actually watch their product. On the bright side the chances are good I may still be able to watch the first win.
  2. Reasons for optimism about the Twins 2026 season? Personally, I can look forward to almost all of their games being available on my MLB.tv package. Better teams games are frequently coopted by channels I don't pay for. There should be minimal demand for the Twins on national broadcasts so aside from regional blackout games I should be able to watch almost daily. I think of a Woody Allen line about a restaurant - "The food there is terrible, and the portions are too small." The Twins may be terrible but I should get a larger than normal portion. Reason for optimism!
  3. Good. My wife and youngest daughter are at the game, glad they saw a win.
  4. Was that a walk-off dinger?
  5. Any idealized defensive lineup includes none of the Twins current infielders. Aside from a couple AAAA guys who can't hit the Twins don't have a single above average infield defender on their roster. Not one. Keaschall is young and athletic enough to maybe become a plus defender at 2B with enough work. Twins seem determined to ensure he never gets that work. They start this BS in the minors, shuffling guys from position to position and then wonder why nobody develops.
  6. And then was criticized in 2025 for defensive shortcomings at 2B, where he played every inning. How much better could his infield defense have been if he'd been allowed to concentrate on mastering that position? We'll never know.
  7. Every inning he plays in the outfield is an inning he's not getting better at second base. The Twins dedication to defensive mediocrity is maddening.
  8. "Alas, normal age-related decline suggests Hrbek may ultimately represent the most realistic ceiling—and, of course, there's a chance he's traded before the contract ends." We're trading Herbie?
  9. And why did we sell off? Because the team assembled by buying low on injured players was terrible. You are correct that depending ONLY on draft and develop isn't a valid path to contention. FA is also not the path for a team that won't spend. Unless you think Josh Bell is putting us over the top. What's left? Draft and develop needs to be supplemented by strategic trades. MN needs to trade from positions of strength for positions of weakness. Trade prospects while they're still prospects, for prospects who are still prospects. MN continues to sit on draftees until they've proven they can't play rather than risk moving an eventual MLB regular. Yes, sometimes you trade a guy you wish you'd kept. That potential, however, is what gets you a prospect with similar potential at a position of weakness.
  10. Sure, let's double down on signing injured players because they cost less. That's the innovative thinking that resulted in a 70 win season last year.
  11. TD is preparing us for a season of drastic underperformance. A two to five ratio of wins to promises is probably what we should expect.
  12. Probably a casual conversation in the private club smoking room. "Things need shaking up so we've decided to fire our GM." "Hey, great idea, I think we'll try that too."
  13. "Buxton remains a long shot, given his no-trade clause, so the focus realistically falls on the two aces." Trading Ryan would likely shorten those odds considerably.
  14. Perhaps ownership decided canning Smith so soon was a mistake. One they didn't want to make again. If so it appears they overcorrected.
  15. "Rooted in misogyny, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype is harmful and destructive, creating the false narrative that straight men will always be the primary protagonists in stories and that women are nothing but supporting characters whose value resides in how different they are from other straight women. " This is exactly backward. The false narrative is that women can be as batshit crazy (sure, call it eccentric) as they want to be and they will still be an object of matrimonial pursuit for normal guys. It's harmful and destructive only to people who expect reality to play out just like the standard rom-com.
  16. A month ago I expected a $70M payroll or less this year. Now I think you're right. Pretend to contend for half a season, trade everyone making more than the minimum, and enter the lockout at $60M MLB payroll and a ton of prospects.
  17. Correct. Bottom line the FO is lying about their intentions. We can hope the FO is only lying to the fan base and not lying to themselves. If they think they're going to field a competitive team by building around the "core" with whatever scraps remain after free agency they're frankly delusional. I still think the intent is to trade Ryan, Lopez, Buxton, and likely Jeffers. Rebuild after the CBA is settled.
  18. If the Twins have a type this is it. And if the bats were actually productive it might even be justifiable.
  19. We hear it. Question is who believes it? It's not a good negotiating tactic to admit every player making more than rookie or vet minimum will be jettisoned. Pretending you want to contend will ideally result in slightly better offers. Slightly. The game is won at the margins.
  20. Yeah, that no trade clause means Buxton is only as cheap as he wants to be. Buxton should demand a hefty salary increase. If that reduces the return to the Twins...why should Buxton care?
  21. Yes, Twins have a hole at first because they've made no effort to develop a solution. Twins philosophy is put your worst defender at first base regardless of fit. Butchers like Julien, midgets like Solano and Arraez. Based on TD reports that philosophy extends to the minors, where DH candidates and OF sloths man the position. Size doesn't matter much in baseball except at first, where a couple extra inches of reach makes the entire infield better. Every year I hear about a minor league SS prospect who may "grow out of" the position. Please put a couple of those guys at first base starting in A ball and develop an honest to god plus defensive first baseman. It won't help us in 26 or 27 but eventually it should pay off.
  22. "Despite significant questions across the roster, they appear hyper-focused on maintaining (and even adding to) the corner outfield endlessly." Keep trying until you get it right. Not one of the current collection is an everyday player on a contender. Maybe one of the prospects is that guy but the success rate of our former prospects (current incumbents), is not inspiring.
  23. I think a lot of the complaints are perception the team is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. I'm looking forward to watching the young guys but I know the reason I'm getting that opportunity is ownerships demand to dramatically cut payroll. Still, I'd rather watch an ambitious young prospect than a marginal veteran who's only here because he couldn't catch on with a competitive team. There are also fair complaints that the team traded away the bullpen for a collection of suspects. Playing the youth is great when they're actual prospects, not roster dumps.
  24. Has the FO said anything to indicate he's a backup? Jeffers replacement is also a possibility. I understand the minimal track record says backup only but I think folks are underestimating just how low ownership wants the payroll.
