Tanking for draft capital makes no sense in baseball's setup. The odds are too smoothed over from position to position, there are limitations on a long-term tank, and prospects even at the top have too much variance for it to be worthwhile. If Falvey truly gave away four years of Varland for whatever marginal one-time uptick in draft odds that would provide for 2026, then not only should he be fired, he should be imprisoned

Peter man, the other team gets to hit too. That ain't a winning run I generally would rather not bunt in the top of the tenth (bottom is a different story). Honestly, I think we'll get our answer by next spring. If the payroll savings are reinvested and Pablo/Ryan/Ober are retained, then Falvey really is spearheading this initiative. But if the savings are pocketed and at least two of the three are shipped off, then Twins fans better be ready to party like it's 1999

I share that fear the more I think about it. If the rationale behind the sell-off was to prep the team for sale ... then why didn't they do it last year when they made the team available for sale? Also, Manfred recently said he was confident a sale will happen, and he can't approach a microphone without stepping on a rake (remember how we were going to hear all about the TV package replacement for ESPN at the all-star break?), so that certainly doesn't help my doubts in this area

When the Duran trade was announced, I was a little underwhelmed by the return. It turned out to be my favorite trade they made. That's disconcerting

I was not a fan of the Outman acquisition. But if he has any value, it’s as short-term Buxton insurance in center. I read that he’s reporting to AAA. If they’re not going to use him now, then what was the point of picking him up?

The feelings about today are about the returns in trade as much as the players going out the door. Stewart given away for nothing Varland moved while still pre-arb Jax and Duran (especially Jax) dealt for underwhelming returns given the leverage the Twins had in the reliever market Tagging France to the Varland trade, reducing the return in the process, all for a pittance of cash savings The acquisition of another 37 LH hitting outfielders that can't hit A tear down was justified. It could have easily happened without any of the above happening.

That's what I'm afraid of: the desperation with which they cleared not just current money, but future money (including potential arb raises) makes me think the Pohlads might not be as close to out the door as we'd like to think

I'm trying to devils-advocate a reason why Varland needed to be traded, and I can't come up with anything. He's closer to the kind of player you acquire in a fire sale, not sell. He's pre-arb next year! The Stewart trade was weird. This one is just sad

Is there a certain level of payroll you have to maintain to receive revenue sharing? If so, that can be the only reason I can think of that Pablo will still be a Twin come 2026 spring training
