Article: Report From The Fort: Decisions And Divides
big dog replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder how Falvey feels about DanSan... -
Alex Meyer has thrown 7.2 innings this spring. 7 hits, 7 BBs, 5 K's. Are we still claiming he is SP depth, even for the Twins? I don't care about Santiago one way or another, but I'll bet he's going to help the Twins more than Meyer helps the Angels. Let's just get over the end of the Meyer Era.

Article: Report From The Fort: Colombia Conquered
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really like having Ervin Santana around for all the younger pitchers, including Gibson, to use as a role model. I don't see any reason to keep DanSan around and hope Molly eventually comes to my way of thinking.- 10 replies

Article: Central Intelligence: Detroit Tigers
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It will be very interesting to see if the family continues to pony up a huge payroll for an old team now that the patriarch has passed away. I predicted last year that this team would have a bunch of age-related injuries and finally collapse. Only partly true then, but I'll ride that prediction again this year. Yeah, plus they have Big Pelf wanting to take the ball every fifth day, along with the Ghost of Anabel Sanchez. JD Martinez in centerfield, anyone? I'll take the under on Kinsler- the way under. -

Article: Twins Roster Projection 2017: Version 1.0
big dog replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's a fun set of Buxton clips on a ridiculously cold Illinois or Minnesota day. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/211043632/byron-buxtons-5-tools-as-measured-by-statcast/ Let's hope he makes the next leap. And doesn't crash into a wall when he does it. I think Santiago and Gibson need to move on. They can be marginally better if they get some breaks, but how much more upside do they have? That might make 2017 a little more palatable, but we need higher ceilings for the next 5 years. Move 'em. Let's see May and some younger guys and get this thing sorted out.- 87 replies

Article: Bringing Back The Band... And That's Just Fine
big dog replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While Hawkins was certainly a significant player for the Twins, he left after the 2003 season. He played for 12 more years, on 10 different teams. He's experienced other team cultures and been exposed to other ideas, for quite a bit longer than he played for the Twins. That ought to be a useful perspective to have when talking to younger players.- 81 replies

Article: Twins Winter League Report (through 11/26)
big dog replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's interesting that a team would send someone to play winter ball for a month, especially when they don't even play every day. I wonder if it's really worth it to the player, the host team, and the MLB team. I'm sure the host team loves it when a local player returns, or a big-name player, but the rest of the time it might just be a pain.- 3 replies

Article: Following The Cubs' Blueprint
big dog replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I will begin by wishing for a new blueprint. Indians or Cubs, I'm happy to give it a shot. Maybe not Padres or Diamondbacks, though. -
Article: Following The Cubs' Blueprint
big dog replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maddon opted out and was interviewing in Chicago about 20 minutes later. I don't think anyone else, especially the Twins, had any chance. Payroll discrepancy is pretty large, except for 2014 (figures from Baseball Prospectus). Money well-spent, by and large, but a lot of it spent. Year Cubs $ Twins $ 2012 $111 $100 2013 $107 $ 82 2014 $ 93 $ 93 2015 $120 $108 2016 $172 $105 Total five-year gap is $115 million. That's only a difference of one top player, say Jon Lester, and a role player, and clearly the talent gap is just a little bit wider than that. -
Article: What To Make Of Kennys Vargas
big dog replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How many 26-28 yr olds who might develop someday can be on the roster at once? I'm ready to give him a half-season of DH/1B backup, then move on to Palka/Walker/whomever. We have a whole bunch of rapidly-aging minor leaguers to work through. And none of them are going to be Ortiz.- 45 replies

Article: What To Make Of Kennys Vargas
big dog replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know, trying to find a lot of time to play a mediocre defensive first baseman who really struggles to hit RH pitching...doesn't seem like Mauer's the problem there. Does anyone really think he's the long-term answer at first base? I like him, a lot, as a bench bat and twice-a-week player, if we ever get the pitching that allows us to carry a bench bat. That's about it. I hope whomever we play regularly at first brings more to the table than that.- 45 replies

I value people's thoughts on Stewart, and he certainly has a chance to do very well. But when I read his writeup and then immediately read Mejia's, I think hmmmm.... #9 sounds like a lot better bet than #10. I think the Nunez trade is going to look really good for the Twins in a year or two.

Thanks for the writeup. I thought I had missed something incredible about Palka until I realized that "He began the season in Chattanooga where he hit .270/.348/.547 (.894) with 24 doubles, four triples, 34 homers and 65 RBI in 79 games." actually cites his season-long statistics, not just his Chattanooga stats. Still, a really good year and I hope he gets a taste in 2017. You make me wonder if Wade could be fast-tracked to the majors.

Article: Twins Pitchers Need A New Voice
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think moving back to the West Coast was what Nolasco needed, poor baby. Other than that, I agree with the article and think that Allen should be the first but not the last. This team needs new voices- a lot of them.- 43 replies

Article: What Do We Know About Derek Falvey?
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My first question for Mr. Falvey: what do you see in Paul Molitor that might convince you he can successfully manage this team? -
I was thinking maybe the poster meant Max Murphy and just typed Kepler instead. Kepler never looked like Mickey Mantle. Murphy had the OPS of .958 in 2014, then it dropped to .650 for 93 games in 2015. I do think Murphy still has a shot, but that injury has pushed him a ways down the ladder. Here's hoping he comes back.

Thanks, Seth. I thought Kanzler had been released, but when I checked the MiLB pages I forgot to look at the year so I assumed it was all current. Oops. I was the charter member of the Free Max Murphy bandwagon. We broke an axle a while back. Still not sure if it can be fixed.

Love the list, like always. I was wondering what kind of shot these players have. I'd like to know from, say, 5 years ago- how many make the majors for more than a week? Obviously being in this group still makes you a real longshot. I looked for an old list and all I quickly found was 2014: let's see how that list looks two years later. How many of these players still have a chance? Where did they end this year? 50. Lewin Diaz- Elizabethton 49. Ryan Eades- Chattanooga 48. Tanner English- Rochester 47. Jonatan Hinojosa- Cedar Rapids 46. Max Murphy- Fort Myers 45. Dalton Hicks- Chattanooga 44. Jason Kanzler- Fort Myers 43. Rainis Silva- Cedar Rapids 42. Felix Jorge- Chattanooga 41. Brett Lee- released by Twins, signed by Brewers and released So 9 of the 10 are still in the organization, which surprises me (great job Seth) and some of them look to have a decent chance of making it. Let's hope this year's class does at least as well.

Can that please be Tommy's last appearance in a Twins uniform? Haven't we suffered enough with this season? Could we please have just a little hope, and closure? Thank you. Sincerely, big dog -

Article: Updates On The Front Office Search
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's fair to say that both sides were somewhat surprised by different aspects of the interview process. I thought the Twins would be a little more broad-minded about bathroom usage, for example. -
Article: Updates On The Front Office Search
big dog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, just to quiet a little of the speculation, I will go on record and let people know that I, big dog, have withdrawn my name from consideration of the Twins' job. They agreed to respect my privacy and not release any information, but I think I owe it to people to let them know. It looks like a great job, but frankly, they don't allow dogs to have access to the clubhouse and I just can't support that kind of attitude. So I'm out. I do wish them well with their search however. -

100% agree, but if you have kids who are doing well in a good high school, moving them halfway across the country might not be the best plan for them. -
