  1. Buxton is so deep in center he could probably buy a hot dog.
  2. Hit a line drive to deep left field, very nice running catch. Buxton would have been standing there waiting for five seconds and caught it behind his back, though.
  3. I think Bert was joking about being on vacation, not actually suspended.
  4. Yeah, I really thought that had a chance. Even though it stayed in the ballpark it took a very good catch to turn it into an out, too. Would have been fun to watch Buxton fly from first.
  5. Buxton's pushing that OBP up. Triple Digits, Baby!
  6. Matt Belisle. Kicking ass and taking names.
  7. Vargas was a little underwhelming there.
  8. Yes, and by all accounts I'm quite happy to have done so.
  9. Phil Hughes: Unmatched Efficiency who'd a thunk it?
  10. This team has been far less painful to watch in the field than last year's nightmare crew.
  11. I apologize for not announcing that April 1 was Cheap Trick Day here in Illinois, one of the few recent acts of the General Assembly that actually became law. Anyway, at least it's still Cheap Trick Week! Anyone here whose mother served with the WACs in the Philippines? Just wondering.
  12. Nah, it's the pizza oven/mold Domino's uses to turn out a "deep dish" pizza in 8 minutes. Otherwise known as French Bread with Ketchup.
  13. I forgot to use the "tongue in cheek" icon there. But I do confess to having tried Sbarro a couple of times out of desperation. Turns out being desperate isn't enough to make it taste like pizza.
  14. I really like the NY style pizza I got from a takeaway place near Times Square, but somehow when I buy it in a mall in the Midwest it isn't the same. Must be the oven. Or something. Maybe the servers here are too friendly.
  15. If you try Chicago deep-dish pizza from 10 places you will get about 8 different versions. Saying it isn't good just means you aren't trying. Lou Malnati's is phenomenal, as long as you get it baked in the restaurant (especially the one on the North Side). The take-and-bake is a pale shadow. Geno's East never disappoints me, probably my all-around favorite. You can get a sausage patty that covers most of the crust. Some really like Pizzeria Uno, but it doesn't work for me. I grew up and went to college in Minnesota (and love Carbone's) so you won't get me dogging the really thin pizza in square pieces. My most recent favorite pizza place here, where I live north of Chicago, is that style, and it's phenomenal. But oh man, the right deep dish is a special thing. And RB, your Chicago-style hot dog has to have both a dill pickle and sweet relish or it just ain't happening.
  16. OK, so Sano has successfully - handled a grounder and throw to first - gone back on a popup - come in on a popup - flattened a baseball Gotta say...I'm feeling a little giddy right now.
  17. I wonder how Falvey feels about DanSan...
  18. Alex Meyer has thrown 7.2 innings this spring. 7 hits, 7 BBs, 5 K's. Are we still claiming he is SP depth, even for the Twins? I don't care about Santiago one way or another, but I'll bet he's going to help the Twins more than Meyer helps the Angels. Let's just get over the end of the Meyer Era.
  19. I really like having Ervin Santana around for all the younger pitchers, including Gibson, to use as a role model. I don't see any reason to keep DanSan around and hope Molly eventually comes to my way of thinking.
  20. It will be very interesting to see if the family continues to pony up a huge payroll for an old team now that the patriarch has passed away. I predicted last year that this team would have a bunch of age-related injuries and finally collapse. Only partly true then, but I'll ride that prediction again this year. Yeah, plus they have Big Pelf wanting to take the ball every fifth day, along with the Ghost of Anabel Sanchez. JD Martinez in centerfield, anyone? I'll take the under on Kinsler- the way under.
  21. Yet another classic bit of hilarious irony from Jonathan Winters!
  22. Here's a fun set of Buxton clips on a ridiculously cold Illinois or Minnesota day. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/211043632/byron-buxtons-5-tools-as-measured-by-statcast/ Let's hope he makes the next leap. And doesn't crash into a wall when he does it. I think Santiago and Gibson need to move on. They can be marginally better if they get some breaks, but how much more upside do they have? That might make 2017 a little more palatable, but we need higher ceilings for the next 5 years. Move 'em. Let's see May and some younger guys and get this thing sorted out.
  23. While Hawkins was certainly a significant player for the Twins, he left after the 2003 season. He played for 12 more years, on 10 different teams. He's experienced other team cultures and been exposed to other ideas, for quite a bit longer than he played for the Twins. That ought to be a useful perspective to have when talking to younger players.
