  1. Do the antics help you forget the heat index? I can't imagine sitting out in that (although truth be told I spent a big chunk of Friday sitting on metal bleachers in a heat index of over 100 myself, watching my daughter's college soccer team). I think I would prefer fewer antics, more action, but minor league games do have their charms.
  2. 7. Think about Oakland...two games back of Texas for the Division Lead. And the Twins roll out a lineup like that. Highest averages in the lineup? .244 (Dozier and Bernier). Next highest average? Trevor Plouffe. Don't blame Corriea for this. The A's management has a right to be upset.
  3. The vast majority of them don't make that much, or much of anything. Nice use of a cliche, though.
  4. The trade makes sense if you are a fantasy GM or in a Stratomatic game. It may make sense in this world. But it's a shame to talk about long-time employees as assets to shuffle. That's the way it is, but it makes me sad. These contracts are people. I wish we treated them better. I hope Morneau resigns with the Pirates and has 5 more happy, wildly productive years.
  5. KC has been less dreadful than many predicted as well. I'm not arguing it was a good signing, not arguing I'm thrilled to have the second year, but some were suggesting to expect an ERA over 5.0.
  6. It's at least got to be a lot harder for her to urinate in her sink. Chief's like the NSA and the closet light in the little kid's room: always on.
  7. I still believe in Caleb Thielbar. Also Casey Fein, and maybe in Josh Roenicke. I just needed to put that out there- testify, you know.
  8. Dozier's a bright spot, no question. It is astonishing to look at the stats in the lineup. I still believe some of those guys are better than that, but perhaps my hopes are getting the best of me. I sure don't want to believe Morneau's done.
  9. Doumit's catching this game (I thought it was Hermann when I posted), but it was Hermann when he beat the Indians. Here's the quote from Lavelle: "Deduno mentioned after the game that Herrmann tells him to not shy away from throwing his breaking ball into the dirt when he's trying to get a batter to chase. And that helps Deduno's confidence." Anyway, the point was that if you tell Deduno to go ahead and throw the ball in the dirt, you may have unleashed something that shouldn't be let out.
  10. I suppose Doumit's going to blame Morneau for not telling him to slide there, too. There would have been a close play at second if he hadn't run straight into the tag. Willingham's got to be praying that the Orioles make a decent offer right about now. This is just terrible baseball. I'm glad that Ryan's at the game. Let's see what he does about it.
  11. Last week Deduno talked about how nice it was that Hermann told him to go ahead and throw it in the dirt, he'd block it. Hermann's just got to be rethinking that whole thing right now. It's almost like Deduno is saying "OK, fine, you blocked that one. Block THIS!!!" I don't blame Gardy for getting tossed- what's the point. And if I were Deduno, I'd plunk Maxwell in the ribs and get in the AC too. -edit: not that I think Deduno can hit anything on purpose today.
  12. A player on the DL cannot be placed on assignment waivers until he is off the DL and healthy enough to play.
  13. Hendricks is a tease- he threw a really good game against the White Sox a couple weeks ago, then Cleveland lights him up. I'd like to see him get regular starts the rest of the year, as others have mentioned. He might still pull it together. Besides, what's the harm? It's not like we have a ton of other young arms to bring up.
  14. Very encouraging- thanks for all the updates. I look forward to hearing a lot about him as he advances through the system.
  15. Coomer's blaming Hermann for missing the bunt- says you need to get a really good jump at 2nd and if the hitter bunts through the ball you can easily get hung up. I'm not necessarily agreeing, just reporting. I'd disagree with the whole idea of bunting there, personally.
  16. This just in: Hermann has a gun.
  17. OK, who thought this was going to be a pitcher's duel after the way that first inning went? I don't have my hand up.
  18. As I wrote in another thread, I vote that on Sept 1 we bench Willingham and Doumit and let the kids play. Unfortunately, I still consider Plouffe a kid, but I'd bench him too. I was on the bandwagon this spring, but I've seen enough to know that he might play a role on the team, but I hope it isn't a big one.
  19. I'd like the Twins to bring up anyone they thought was deserving, and give them multiple chances to play. We have 10 games with zero playoff implications for anyone; sit Willingham, Doumit, Morneau if he's around, and maybe Mauer plays half of them. Our last 7 games are with the Tigers and the Indians; by then, the Indians may have fallen out, so let the kids play there too. At this point, I don't see any as those three as all that much of an asset anyway. If a contender cries because their competition has to face Willingham, with no outfield ability and a .200 average, I don't really care. It's time to start sorting them out. I think there are a number of guys we don't need to keep around- let's test it now rather than later.

    Liriano

I guess we all have things we're tired of, like constantly bashing people instead of being realistic. Liriano's been this good twice before, both times with the Twins. What are the odds he sustains the success the third time? For his sake, I truly hope he does. I'm just saying I wouldn't bet anything I couldn't afford to lose, given his history. Why does anything that doesn't criticize management seem to automatically get branded as supporting management? Oh, I forgot, this is the internet where everything has to be polarized. My bad.

    Liriano

I don't want Hernandez, but Escobar might have a chance. How much would you bet on Liriano being an average or better ML starter in 2 years? If I could figure that guy out I'd have a job in a front office some place. I do wish him the best, and just hope he doesn't walk off the mound holding his elbow again.
  22. This is Gardy talking about second-hand reports to a reporter. Hopefully there's more going on behind the scenes. Saying that teams don't want to take on the money might be leaving out the fact that teams haven't been willing to part with anyone interesting even if the Twins pay the money. Morneau hasn't exactly been tearing it up, you might have noticed. He's also been pretty public about wanting to stay- that may not hurt his trade value much, but it sure isn't helping it. Not saying that's what is happening, just saying there is a lot of assertion here about motivation based on a small scrap of perhaps partially-correct information.
  23. Reading these posts has been encouraging enough that I have put aside the last four days' of ineptitude at the ML level. What a great problem to have- which potential stud deserves to be Player of the Year? I don't remember a group this strong in the minors since the early 80s, and this group compares better, at least to me.
