  1. Here's hoping he can have a reasonably successful AAA start and then perhaps sit down and get ready for next year. He's been through enough.
  2. That's not accurate at all. It's rare, but he's far from the only manager to do this. LaRussa and someone got into it a couple years ago. Anyone remember Don Zimmer rushing the mound to try and get a piece of Pedro Martinez? This doesn't happen often, but it certainly happens. Look, there are two issues here. Was he out of control and inappropriate? Of course. Was he trying to act in the best interest of his players? I think so. Don't say he was out of control, and therefore it's the same as Sano. Sano's act was less idiotic by far, but the motivation was not team-oriented.
  3. Paging Liam Hendricks...please see Gene Glynn. I hope Gibson has a restful off-season and comes back in good shape. He had nothing today, and not much lately. Time to quit wrecking his confidence.
  4. Yet another out on the basepaths by the Mets.
  5. Dear Mr. Gardenhire, Please remove Mr. Gibson from the game before someone gets killed by a line drive. Sincerely, The MLB Player's Union
  6. The Mets announcers are going nuts about calling that play a hit rather than an error. They are already anticipating a possible no-hitter by Gee and wondering if that could be ruled an error after the fact. Let's hope the Jinx is in order.
  7. Good inning for Gibson there.
  8. I was actually just about to post that if the line was Gibson pitching into the 4th, I would take the under. He looks lost on the mound, at least to me- he's not getting after it...
  9. MLB.com is carrying the Met's broadcast, and I don't live in MN so it isn't blacked out.
  10. At the risk of getting serious, I was more or less thinking along these lines yesterday, as we went 2 for 3,000 with runners in scoring position. Couldn't we try to steal a base? Hit and run a little bit? Move an opposing batter off the plate? It just seems like complete station-to-station statue play, waiting for Plouffe to pop up with runners on (yes, I'm sour on Trevor after supporting him a long time). Dead Men Walking. I know most of these guys can't hit, but can't they do something? I exempt Dozier from this rant. Great catch against Willingham there.
  11. He had a player barrelled over the night before, his pitcher nicks the guy who did it. That happens in the majors all the time. Running after the other manager was an idiot move, no question, but he's a first-time manager and he made a mistake in an effort to fight for his guys. Totally different than Sano. I'm not saying Dougie was right- far from it, and I won't complain about the suspension- but I'm sure he did it because he thought he was protecting his guys. I won't complain about that.
  12. Mint was protecting his players. How is that anything like showing up another team?
  13. deleted post (even though it was spectacularly interesting, at least to me). I refer to Harry Markowitz' pathbreaking work on generating the "efficient frontier" of stock portfolio development by using covariance analysis to develop optimal diversification strategies, minimizing risk for every possible expected return. I then draw a parallel to baseball contracts, with suggestions for future research (which is of course impossible since we seldom know all the possible contracts players consider, but hey that's how it goes). Ah, but it's all over...I'm melting...what a world, what a world....
  14. This is very interesting- especially the poll that AJ wins! In the previous question, players must want a shot at some Jeter memorabilia... Surveys always have flaws, but they provide at least some insight. I'm surprised about the trivial number of players who answered that they wouldn't take less money from any team, as you mention. Even in the case where over 30% said they would be willing to play for any team, I wouldn't think that meant they would always take the highest offer- you could easily imagine someone filling this out thinking "sure, if only one team wanted me, I'd play for them". That's taking the most money, but in a pretty limited universe. I certainly believe money matters, and matters a lot; to some players, it might be the only thing (see Morris, Jack), but playing time and perceived playoff chances seem to matter too. Hunter went to Detroit without shopping himself too much, IIRC, in part because he wanted a shot at a ring and his son is in college relatively nearby. Hamilton took the offer from the Angels without even checking to see if the Rangers wanted to meet or beat it. He didn't turn down less money directly, but he ignored an obvious opportunity to find a better deal, and Texas was hacked off they didn't get a chance. This is ancient history, but Hrbek and Puckett both turned down better offers elsewhere, and I remember Chili Davis offering to take a below-market deal, saying he just wanted to play on the same team as Kirby, but the Twins' best offer to him was no offer.
  15. That was a nice fifth hit for Mauer. Mr. Pohlad, I mean Ashbury, your millions are earned today.
  16. He's battling, and most definitely getting after it.
  17. I hope the Twins sign a reasonably big-name free agent next year, and I hope he works out better than Nick Swisher has. Yikes. He seems like a decent guy and I bet his poor performance this year is eating at him.
  18. Why on earth would a Pohlad be allowed to moderate this site! I call for a Citizen's Ban of this poster.
  19. His development needs help. Was that unclear? Sorry.
  20. RISP!!! I really like Mauer 4-hit games. Big inning- let's keep it going.
  21. If Gibson had gotten through the sixth unscathed, I think his ERA might have dropped below 6. Baby steps...
  22. True- I can see why Gardy put him out there for another inning. It just didn't work out very well. I hope it helps his long-term development, because he sure needs some.
  23. The Tribe took Carrasco out too early, and I think maybe Gardy took Gibson out too late. He's been extremely unimpressive here in the 6th.
  24. Plouffie swung the bat there anyway. Hit the ball fairly well, but right to the left fielder. Our RISP is heading back to its natural level, apparently, after a quick first-and-third nobody out turns into K-K-9. They took out Carrasco too early!
  25. The Cleveland TV broadcasters are saying that according to Berardino, Morneau has cleared waivers.
