    I was concerned the minute they announced that they were cutting payroll. I could just as easily see a 78-84 season as I could an 85 win season. Meanwhile, the Guardians' pitchers are back and healthy and the Tigers have 6 viable starters and appear to be on the rise.

    Yes. You can never have too much pitching. And none of the Twins' starters, outside Pablo, have shown that they can be successful over the course of a full 30 start, 180 innings season.

    Many times young gets thrown around in place of experience. Sometimes it seems like people assume that everyone's big league career begins at 20 or 21. 28, 29 are not young players in baseball terms, in my opinion. Those are players in their primes. I figure 25 and under are young. 26 to 31 are prime. 32-plus are seasoned veterans. Arbitrary definitions, of course. And for individuals only. If you had a team whose average age is 26, that's a young team in my mind. Can't believe I'm thinking this hard about this.

    Bring back Bert. Hrbek would be fun too. Pair one of those older guys with someone like Phil Hughes. Phil Hughes would be phenomenal, actually. But he's busy these days opening sports card boxes on YouTube.

    I would agree, if the same Pohlad logic didn't also apply when there were players worth spending money on, this off-season or any other.

    When I think of replacing Sonny, I don't think so much about where Sonny's career is headed. I think about how do the Twins find an arm that can produce at the level he did last year in 2024? I agree, he wasn't likely to be that guy again. I don't mind losing him because, like you, I don't think he reproduces 2023 again and I don't want the Twins to pay for what he did in the past that he might not achieve again. However, I think they need to find a strong #2 to play that role again this season.

    Calm down. The author was clearly referring to where these teams are right now. Not where they've been over the last arbitrary number of years. It is embarrassing that a pitiful last place team outspent the division winner with aspirations of post season success.

    You and the Twins appear to be banking on a lot of improvement to the younger players. That's a dicey proposition. Some will, some won't. Fortunately, they have enough to sift through. Last year at this time, Miranda looked like a future producer. But I like the idea of supporting the young talent you do have with good free agent pickups - look at Texas last year (sans DeGrom which seemed silly to me given the likelihood of injury).

    Yeah that's fair. I think I chose 74 to 78 because I just think too much needs to go right in order to win again. And thart includes Correa's health and the chances Pablo can replicate what he did last year. Definitely hoping for more, though. My optimism has blinded me too often in the past.

    Agreed. Thank you putting data to what I've witnessed many times over the decades of watching baseball. And that list reads like a list of HOF-level talent with a few PED aging curves sprinkled in. The Twins had luck with Paul Molitor, Jack Morris and Nelson Cruz, and less luck with Dave Winfield, Ruben Sierra, Phil Nevin, Steve Carlton, etc. Jim Thome probably another success. But, again, we're talking about HOF or borderline HOF level talent for much of this list.

    Honestly, I could see this team winning anywhere from 70 to 90 games. There are so many question marks. Rotation, Buxton health, improvement or lack thereof of young players, bullpen, depth, etc. It's almost impossible for me to talk myself into a smaller range with them.

    When the first mesage out of the front office after packing the stadium in a playoff matchup against Houston were, "We're cutting payroll", I was the one that was embarrassed. Embarrassed that I continue to allow this team to test my fandom regularly. I get all the factors that lead to their decision, but this team is going to continue to be a low-budget baseball team hunting for FA scraps and trying to cling to the talent they do have. Baseball's economics suck and I'm embarrassed that it's my favorite sport. I honestly believe there is value and revenue to be made if you build a consistently excellent team that is a legit contender every year. You don't need to sign the top FA every year, but filling the holes on your roster with low budget players and prayers isn't a serious approach to winning.

    His power and run production in Milwaukee last year were phenomenal (33 HR, 100 RBI pace). But, there's a fine line between expectations and hope when a player will be 38 years old - just a few days after Opening Day. He feels more likely to regress than improve or even maintain. And, as others have pointed out, last year was an outlier over the last three years in those power numbers. Is he better than I think? I don't think so. He's riskier than many think. He's a solid platoon/backup/veteran clubhouse guy. But if this is it for the off season, I'll be disappointed. If people were down on the Gallo signing, are they okay with this one?

    I would love to see the Twins "test drive" another super star whose market may not be what he thinks, like Correa in 2022. I wouldn't mind doing that with Belli, but nothing longer than 3 with the opt out after 1 (just like CC). Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the Twins are in the same position that they were in 2022; with a taker for Donaldson and a few years removed from Mauer. If they could find a taker for Buxton, maybe but then I'd want a more reliable, longer term solution than Bellinger. And I don't see that in FA right now.
