  1. I think it was Bud Grant that said the best ability a player has is availability. Buxton and Correa don’t have the durability gene, so we shouldn’t expect to see 140 games out of either of them. When they tie large part of the payroll on a shrinking revenue team, that’s a problem. It isn’t about whether or not Buxton or Correa want to play, it’s about they aren’t playing. That’s a huge problem for this team this season and the rest of their contracts. It does make clear that guys like Jose Ramirez are worth their weight in gold.
  2. With all his analytics tools Rocco still runs Okert out there? We all knew that was going to end badly as it always does when Okert pitches. Since they traded Nick Gordon (since released) for him, they’re going to keep Okert on the roster no matter what he does! It’s the Twins way.
  3. Patience is required. FO is forced into promoting him way too early. I’m excited that he’ll get some experience at the MLB level and I’ll get to see his high velocity with excellent control. Twins have been patient with SWR, as an example, and that has paid off. Even if his debut is a flop, he can return toAAA for more innings there and be ready to compete for a spot in the rotation next spring. Can’t expect him to be Skenes in his debut, but if he can get through 4-5 innings and keep the team in the game, that would be success.
  4. The level of Twins pitching development success has been impressive. Have to give FO credit. It will be critical that this continues given the payroll limitations. I am impressed and optimistic that next years rotation will be as good, if not better than, this years. Ober and SWR improvement proves that the development does not stop when players hit the MLB 26 man roster. Really impressed with SWR this year. He has poise and confidence that can’t be taught, along with his physical tools. I’ve yet to see him wilt on the mound when facing a good or great lineup. His start the other day against Cleveland was extremely impressive and shows his potential. I’m a little confused when national and some local pundits say his ceiling is mid-rotation. After what he did against Cleveland and some work in the offseason, he has as much of a chance to be top of the rotation as any other prospect in baseball. Good luck to Matthews and I’m excited to watch his debut. He sounds like a potential ace. Fans and the organization will have to be patient with him, but this is the most optimistic I’ve been about the rotation in a long time.
  5. Severino should be Santanas replacement. Young, switch-hitter with power is valuable. Hope to see him get a chance in September. Last year he was blocked by Donny Barrels and Kyle Farmer. This year they tried Kiriloff. Now that those options are gone, they need to see what they have for 1B before they do something unwise and sign Santana!
  6. Twins are in a new payroll world now as many have pointed out. No way can you extend Castro AND their core players. Reality is Castro is not a core player and he will HAVE to be replaced. They are now operating in low revenue mode that trades value and replaces them with young, pre-arb players. Unless/until MLB corrects their national TV revenue problems and revenue sharing, the Twins are going to be forced to operate at the bottom of the league payroll levels. The RSN model failed and that money is not being replaced. MLB current operating model is a house of cards without a national TV contract similar to NBA or NFL. With attendance down and no replacement for RSN revenue on the horizon, expecting the payroll to expand is an unrealistic dream. Keep in mind that baseball teams have huge expenses with their minor league teams, their minor league development complex, the Dominican academy, etc. NFL and NBA don’t have those expenses, they get all that for free from colleges!
  7. Can Rocco start some runners or call for a steal attempt to stay out of the DP?! They hit into 5 in the night cap. They got away with it and won the game, but that is a lot of wasted scoring chances! Not going to win against Cleveland most of the time hitting into 5 DP. We’ll see if Rocco can learn or if he is stuck following the script.
  8. Saw it on CBS Sports baseball schedule for next Tuesday. No announcement from Twins or official move yet. I wonder where CBS got the info….
  9. Wow, many moves being made. I see that Matthews is listed as the starter for next Tuesday’s game vs. the Royals. I guess Matthews is taking Ryan’s spot and Blewett is filling Stewart’s roster spot. Good news is we get to see Matthews make his MLB debut, Exciting news!
  10. Decision is made. Farmer is starting at 2nd base and Lee sis now on the 15 day IL. Ryan also on the IL. Sounds like he won’t pitch again this year. Stewart is on the 60 day IL for shoulder surgery. They recalled Scott Blewett for the BP, I guess as a replacement for Ryan.
  11. I’m not arguing that Ober hasn’t put up good numbers this year. He’s pitched like a top of the rotation guy. The postseason is different. His postseason history is limited, but not good. Manager didn’t have confidence in him last year. We’ll see how he does in the playoffs (if they make it) this year before he’s anointed ace. Regular season numbers are great, but pitching well in the postseason is a different thing….
  12. The real gauge of how good Ober is should be how has he fared against the really good hitters and teams. It was great to see him dominate Detroit, but they’re not a playoff team. The good to great hitters and playoff teams are going to determine the caliber of pitcher he is. How will he do against Cleveland? If the Twins make the playoffs, he should get a chance to pitch against NYY, Orioles, or whoever they play.
  13. The argument can be made for and against deadline moves and what the appropriate payroll level should be. I agree with all that the ownership should invest to make the team better when there is chance to go deep in the postseason. Given what was available and the costs for those players, compared to internal options, maybe the better choice was to stand pat. Like the medical hippocratic oath says, “first do no harm” (or something like that). Based on the trades from past deadlines, this FO moves haven’t improved the team. They have internal SP options and it sounds like Topa is working his way back. Festa and Thielbar looked good last night. If Thielbar regains some of his old form, he fills the late inning lefty role. Festa, Dobnak, and Varland, maybe even Matthews can fill the SP holes short-term. I say let this team gos as far as it can, with help from internal pieces.
  14. Should look at the internal options very closely this year. Is Matthews an option to make a couple of starts or be the bulk guy in a BP game? Festa looked good his last time on the mound. Maybe between Festa, Matthews, Varland, and Dobnak they can give SWR a breather and fill in for Paddack the next two months. If they get to the postseason, does the FO think that López, Ryan, Ober, and SWR are good enough? BP lefty is a problem. Maybe the FO thinks Funderburk coming back is as good as a trade or that Thielbar is going to gain control and be a shut-down guy again. id like to see Blake Snell and Tanner Scott but I realize that the prospect price would be very painfull. Based on last two years deadline moves, it think it’s better that this FO sits it out. They’ll do less damage on the sidelines!
  15. This is a pitcher they need to hang onto. If they’re going to develop their own #1 ace, this guy is it. They’re not going to bring in a #1 from outside via trade or FA, so hang onto Zebby and see what he can do next year. He could even get a few innings with the Twins this year if they’re unable to bring in aSP at the deadline. Will be exciting to watch him pitch!
  16. This year it’s Miranda and Santana at first. I don’t trust Miranda’s defense at first long term. Next year they need to consider Severino, or Jeffers as #1 options, then Larnach, Wallner, and other internal options #2. Staying internal next year would give some of the above mentioned guys a chance at a roster spot and fill a need. Do not bring back 40-year old Santana or go outside the org for a first baseman. Save all the prospect capital they have for a top of the rotation SP next offseason and fill the rest of the holes internally.
  17. You guys missed on naming Minnesota born Twins players. So many Minnesotans played for Twins! Paul Geil, Jerry Koosman, Dave Goltz, and yes, Tom Kelly from Graceville MN. Jim Rantz, minor league director for many years was also a MN born Twins player. Did you know he won the deciding game of 1960 CWS to win the only CWS championship for the Gophers? He also discovered Puckett while watching his son play JC ball. You guys need to get up to speed on your Twins history if you’re going to comment on the team!
  18. Agree. I was shocked as well. Bunting Larnach to 3rd drew the infield in. Forcing their infield in gave Kepler a better chance at walkoff hit. Credit to him that he put the ball in play.
  19. With all of the teams that think they’re contenders due to playoff format, competition for pitching at the deadline drives up prices beyond reasonable. FO should have learned from past experience and factored that into their season plan. They’re not going to be able to afford the prospect price or the salary cost of acquiring impact arms at the deadline. They’re going to have to stick with what they have and add when players return from IL or from MiLB system. For the BP they’re going to count on Stewart and Topa coming back fully healthy and contributing. For the rotation, it will have to be Festa, or Dobnak, or Matthews. Ready or not, they will win or lose with those guys, and I’m ok with that.
  20. But why not try a bunt anyway? With a runner on third, Castillo could even try a bunt or the pitcher uncorks a WP….
  21. When the Saturday game against Milwaukee went to extra innings, why wasn’t there a bunt to move the gift runner over to win it in the tenth? One run wins it, but I don’t recall a bunt attempt. Rocco would rather wait for a walk-off home run instead. With a depleted lineup, you would think scratching out a run by bunt would at least be tried. Bunt to move runner to third. Infield would then have to play in, which gives the hitter more room to punch one through the infield. Thats a specific scenario where Rocco fails miserably. Brewers had Yelich! bunting in the 11th. I guess bunt isn’t in Rocco’s playbook. I’ll wait for the Rocco defenders to jump on me, but that’s a game he lost.
  22. They lost by one run. His ph moves do not work and his explanations are dumb. I’ve never heard any manager pull their best hitter to avoid getting plunked. If you buy that story, that’s on you. He threw in the towel on a game he shouldn’t have.
  23. The PH, Martin, was apparently injured. He went on the IL today with an oblique injury, retroactive to June 6th. Baldelli PH an inferior RH bat for Miranda.. The other PH in that game, Margot, struck out twice in the 9th inning. In a one run game. Nice moves that clearly help the team win games. I’ll wait for your examples of all the PH moves that have won games and put the team 12 games over .500.
  24. You’re going to defend pinch hitting for the hottest hitter on the team, and turns out in baseball?! Go ahead and explain why that was a logical move. Explain the logic of Miranda out of the lineup today. Then tell me why no other manager in the league pinch hits for their starters in the 5th and 6th innings. Today, Margot PH for Wallner in the 6th against their LHRP. Houston followed with two RHRP afterwards. So Baldelli benched Wallner bat for Margot. Wallner could have hit against the two RHRP in later innings.
  25. Of course Rocco has Miranda on the bench today! Explain why the hottest hitter in baseball at age 26 needs a day off? He can’t DH a couple days in a row?! Pinch hitting for Miranda the other night was also a brilliant move. The manager should go manage another team please. His lineups, pinch hitting, and bullpen moves are frustrating (putting it politely) to watch.
