    Buxton’s slump isn’t going to get him pulled from the lineup. They’re going to keep plugging him until he says he can’t go. It’s too bad that the slump comes at a crucial time, but that’s baseball. You stick with the your stars. If they go down in a ball of flames with Buxton in the lineup, so be it.

    The point was that if Jenkins is on the 40 man roster when the expected strike happens, if that extends into next season, players on the 40 man will be barred from playing or practicing baseball.

    I think all of the Padres RBI hits in that last inning were opposite field. Twins could learn something from that. twins had bases full with one out and couldn’t add on….

    Lewis is going to be interesting to watch the rest of the season. The last couple of games looks like some bad habits of trying to pull everything with his legs looking unstable under him. Could be just bad AB’s and nothing to worry about, but we’ll see. I like his defense at 1B, so I hope they don’t move him around. Playing one position I think helps certain players at the plate. He looks confident, which is the most important factor with him. Keaschall’s hitting is for real. I think he can maintain his OB rate as he can put the bat on the ball consistently. I question whether he can learn to be a good outfielder. He has speed and athleticism. I’m just not sure about his baseball instincts and IQ. His arm is another problem. If that’s still recovering from TJ surgery, then that might improve. He has a lot to work on before he can be a passable OF. They knew this when he was drafted, so I’m really disappointed this problem wasn’t addressed in the minors.

    Great questions for the offseason. Right now they’re playing (and not playing) the pitchers and players to win. Not calling up Jenkins means they’re not concerned with evaluating players, just winning. Matthews is a starter between now and the end of the year due to necessity. That also gives them more data to evaluate what to do next year, but I think there are enough questions about the so called SP depth that he is considered a SP in ST. Can’t count on Festa at all IMO, wait until ST to see if Lopez can revert to form (I doubt it), Abel is not a proven entity, and I have serious doubts about Ober both this year and next. I’ll wait to see Ryan pitch again (hopefully this year) to reserve judgement on him, but he may be gone next year anyway. That leaves Bradley, Kremer, Prielipp, and Matthews to pencil in next spring. I don’t see the SP bench AAA, so Matthews is a starter until someone steps up and performs better than him next year.

    Good news is that there are still enough Twins fans paying attention this late in the season. Good to see the response here and the passion for Twins/baseball. IMO, Jenkins is not being promoted for all the right reasons, as I’d rather the FO err on the side of caution with prospects. Seen too many guys recently being promoted too soon for their own good. There’s always going to be an adjustment period for rookies that can be rough (for them, the team, and fans), so now is not Jenkins time. Injury or injuries can change that situation quickly.

    I sure hope they can keep the winning streak going. Talk about ying and yang… They played poor defense and let a lot of scoring opportunities go to waste (15 lob), but still won the game. Good fortune. Tomorrow off day comes at a good time to let the BP rest. Padres are hot, so hope the Twins get good pitching, defense, and hot hitting to win a series on the road.

    Keaschall misses the cutoff man, letting runner advance to scoring position. Bad defense all around this inning!

    The fact that so many posters here state that LK defense will improve with offseason coaching highlights two issues. Why wasn’t he coached properly in the minors? He played OF and 2nd base in the minors, they should have noted his bad play then and made corrections. That’s what the minors used to be for. Under the Falvey regime defense is an afterthought and this team will suffer for it for a long time. The second issue is rapid promotion through the system for hyped up prospects. He had TJ surgery and spent all of 2023 season as a DH in the minors. That alone should have meant he play a full season at AAA, but Falvey didn’t believe in defense. That rapid, unwarranted promotion was a disservice to Keaschall and now we see the results. His baserunning is borderline negative. He has speed, but that’s about it. Doesn’t look like he understands how to read a pitcher yet. Getting picked off 1B and thrown out at third is unacceptable. I think his overall offense is hurt by his poor baserunning. Another skill Twins apparently don’t teach in the minors anymore.

    Gray, Fedko, Rogers, Go, Orze, and maybe Raya could all be DFA’d before Kreidler. He’s a solid backup SS until Either Culpepper takes over or Houston is ready. He’s also very good in the OF off the bench. Clemons and Caratini have cratered to show they’re , at best, bench players. Relying on Caratini as the primary catcher next year is not wise. He looks wore out. But yeah, let’s open the roster and start using the tram from St.Paul to Target Field.

    This loss was especially tough to watch. Looked like they got complacent at the plate after Clemons homer. No hits from the 4th until Culpepper single in the 9th (very nice AB! Give the rookie credit for not giving up). Bad fielding, bad baserunning, and poor pitching. Too many walks to the Phillies with a lead. Like Prielipp yesterday, Kremer fell apart in the 6th and should have been pulled before the Bohm AB. Put a fork in em, they’re done. I was against calling up the young guys, but not after today’s fiasco. Put Martin and Buxton on the IL and call up Jenkins and Rodriguez. If this kind of play continues, make some more changes to get Sabato and Wallner up here too.

    This argument assumes that Jenkins comes up and is immediately successful at the plate. Even better than current guys. We’ve seen our current players take a long time to develop into productive MLB hitters, as limited as that is right now. Most rookies struggle during their first taste of the big leagues. Jenkins history is that he struggles immediately after being promoted to a higher level. I think it’s unfair to Jenkins to have such high expectations. You shouldn’t count on a rookie to step up and deliver right away, especially during a playoff chase. I think it’s better to promote him next spring, after logjam is cleared during the offseason. He’s not being harmed by getting more AAA AB’s.

    I thought Lewis’s 5th inning AB was particularly bad given the circumstances. Both Jeffers and Bell made veteran adjustments in laying off the knuckle curves from Nola and earning walks to load the bases. Lewis comes to the plate after watching those two AB’s and strikes out on three pitches bc he’s trying to hit the HR. Immature approach. A patient, make him throw strikes, go with the pitch AB could have produced better results. It’s disappointing to see that he hasn’t matured a bit more to better grasp the mental part of the game. He’s been playing great in the field and hitting very good lately, so I’m hoping it’s one bad AB that he learns from and gets better.

    Lee, Lewis, and Clemons going ofer was a problem. Lewis has been hot lately, so he gets a pass. His AB with the bases loaded against Nola sure looked bad. Three pitches, two swings not close, the last swing was from his knees. He was definitely trying to hit the grand slam there, where a base hit would work just as well. Tried to pull the outside pitches, which never works.

    If they get decent pitching, they can stay relevant and in the playoff hunt. We’ll know if they still have a shot after Philly and Atlanta. If they can win those series, that sets up the home series with CWS & Tigers. Great to watch games that matter instead of tryouts for prospects/spring training games.

    Not sure what your point is here. Pitching depth is unnecessary? Or innings eaters can be picked up off the waiver wire at anytime? Or you’re saying they didn’t need to keep Matthews in the rotation. I guess that doesn’t help with the current SP depth issue that the OP points out. Matthews gave 5 innings today. Hopefully the blister issue is behind him.

    You really can’t have enough pitching…. Gallagher is the highest rated pitching prospect at AAA. He’s had a couple of successful outings recently as pointed out by TD Prospect Hot Sheet. He could give them a start or two if all else fails. It’s looking thin for SP with Ryan injured, Ober getting hit, and Prielipp ready to hit a wall. Good thing they traded for Kremer. Sounds like they were in on Soriano, but couldn’t get it done.

    The author loses credibility saying that Keaschall can play 2nd base. In the same way that I could stand at 2B with a glove on! Keaschall, I hope has had his infield glove taken away and burned so as to never be used again. The jury is still out on his OF play. If he doesn’t improve, I’m not sure where they’re going to play him.

    It’s possible that KC was available only under emergency conditions due to being hit by two pitches yesterday. Or not wanting to use a rookie to pinch hit, or not wanting to lose Kreidler’s defense.

    Keaschall says hello. How about Lee at SS? Or Julien at 2nd base. I could go on, but I think you get the point. Under the Falvey regime, defense has been an afterthought. But they do move players around on defense under the guise that a player that moves around the field is valuable whether or not they can actually play any of those positions. Let’s move Royce to 1B. Now that he looks comfortable there, let’s move him to 2nd base…. Surprised they haven’t stuck him in the OF. Twins started winning series when they moved Keaschall off 2nd base, Lee to third, and Kreidler to primary SS. Hope that Culpepper doesn’t degrade the defense in that important position. Chalk it up to nerves and start over tonight.

    Now the question is why haven’t they called up Lackey to take Jackson’s spot and get him MLB time so he can replace Jeffers next year!

    I think they haven’t been over .500 since April…. It’s three days since trade deadline. Making a 180 degree pivot now would be really schizophrenic. They’re still only one game out. Not time to pivot yet. Stay the course and keep pushing. Pushing for the playoffs is not preventing preparation for next year. Jenkins and KC are getting in their FIRST full season at AAA. That’s not stunting their development. Other players on the roster, like Keaschall, Martin, Roden, Larnach, et al are being tested under some pressure. We’ll see how they perform and learn if these guys are part of the future or not. Thats part of the process for next year.

    Yes, other teams have called on rookies. Twins have done it in the past. I remember Alex Kiriloff. Sometimes it works and most times it doesn’t. Both KC and Jenkins haven’t had a full season of AAA ball and we should expect them to save the offense in their first taste of MLB? I just don’t think that’s realistic. But that’s just my opinion and you may be right. We’ll see how it plays out.

    You may not like this roster, but as flawed as they are in your eyes, they played their way into contention. They forced management to be buyers. I know three consecutive losses are discouraging, but it’s too soon to panic now. Yes, calling up rookies to save the offense is a desperation move.

    1.) It doesn’t look like KC is fully recovered from injury. 2.) As I’ve already stated, I don’t think it’s a good idea to throw a rookie into a starting role in a playoff chase. I think that’s too much pressure on a young player to perform AND spark the offense. I’ll look for KC and Jenkins if the wheels fall off the playoff chase or next year. The offense should come around if the pitching doesn’t immediately put them behind in every game.
