    Forgot to add that since Lee is full time 3B, he can’t fill the LH bench bat or pinch runner roles.

    I’ve seen Lee make some terrible plays at SS. Thats why he’s been moved from the position. Not sure Gray is better defensively or not, I was just commenting about what his role is, not necessarily if he’s the best player for that role.

    Gray’s job is backup SS. He’s the only SS other than Kreidler. Lee played himself out of the position. And Gray is LH bat on the bench. He has some speed, so he’s also a pinch runner. That’s his role and why he’s on the roster.

    Is Jackson signed for next year? Or is he still arbitration eligible? I can’t recall if he was signed to a one year deal when they traded for him.

    Yes, play them from day one next year. Not the same pressure as throwing them into a playoff chase. If the wheels fall off this playoff chase, then call up the rookies.

    I understand why fans want to see KC and Jenkins. I don’t think either has done enough at AAA to demand calling up. KC is coming off injury and hasn’t been hitting much until last night. Throwing either of them into the starting lineup would be grasping at straws bc asking rookies to spark your offense and be solid defensively is a big ask. Also playoff like games is a lot of pressure to put on rookies. IMO, they’re protecting both players by leaving them where they are. Wallner is another story. I don’t think his swing will ever work at the MLB level. His big leg kick and exaggerated open stance just seems like too much pre-swing movement to ever be successful. He should not play in the OF, so he’s strictly a DH, and can’t hit LHP. Don’t see an opportunity for him. If the wheels fall off and they play themselves out of contention, then make moves to see all three guys.

    That’s the problem, Wallner is strictly a DH, so Bell would have to be DFA’d to make room. When it seems like he’s cooked, he hits a home run like last night. He does just enough to keep himself in the lineup. They like his veteran presence in the club house, so I don’t see a DFA happening, unless they keep playing like they are and completely fall out of contention. Sabato should be given a chance at 1B to see if he can add RH power. Then the problem is where to play Lewis. Unless they keep losing, I don’t see either Wallner or Sabato given a chance. It would be great if they were to play and at least create some trade value for the offseason.

    They at least lengthened out the BP. Hoffman is one of the top arms in the league, per his swinging strike rate as sixth best in all of baseball. High price to pay, but similar to what TB paid for Tyler Wells today, with Hoffman being a much better arm. Too bad they didn’t address the BP in the offseason, but they’ll have the BP mostly resolved next year with Hoffman, Gomez, Morris, Funderburk, Nance(?), and others back (not sure of Banda’s status).

    I like that they’re thinking big and getting a controllable asset. Not mortgaging the future to go all in on this year. Turning prospects into major league talent is also wise. FWIW, CBS Sports writer Mike Axisa analyzed the Skubal trade and points out that history shows prospect packages don’t always turn out. The trades of Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Zach Greinke, and David Price only returned two players that turned into major league talent. If Twins think that Houston is going to be the next SS, then trading KC is acceptable. But are they ok with Kreidler as a fill in while Houston is at AAA next year? Lots of trade-offs involved, but that’s why trades are a gamble for both parties.

    There are certain players that don’t have high “baseball IQ”. Royce, Martin, and maybe Keaschall are those types of players. Remember when Royce failed to tag a runner in front of him in a game last year when playing 3B? Same type of failure. Martin has thrown to the wrong base more than once during his time in the OF. I’m old school where these kinds of mental errors should not happen at this level, especially for a team like the Twins that is not talented enough to overcome defensive errors. It’s more a condemnation of baseball today that players get to the big leagues without understanding basics. I think it’s due to their high athleticism that allows them to get through levels without accruing baseball IQ. It’s not the worst thing to happen and it’s something the team will have to learn from and move on. Eight walks given up and two runners thrown out on the bases is also concerning. We have to accept the good with the bad and hope there are more good things happening to help Twins win today.

    There has to be a balance between win now and doing what’s best for the player and organization’s future. Right now, they’ve got Keaschall playing CF when Buxton isn’t and Kreidler or Clemons as backup to Keaschall. Thats the short term fix and I don’t see them calling up Jenkins now, barring another injury. I don’t really like Keaschall’s defense, but FO and/or manager have made the decision that is the plan. I think it could be tough to bring up Jenkins and put him in the lineup in a playoff chase. He’s going to be under a lot of pressure when he starts his career. Would be better if it’s at the start of next season instead.

    Martin pinch ran for Jeffers with the count 0-0. He can steal right away. Hit and run was an idea for some of the other situations, not necessarily with Clemons AB. Just a thought to try to stay out of DP’s. I watched part of Brewers-Giants game tonight. Murphy pulled off a hit and run. I know that’s a rare play in today’s game.

    Always great to watch a win. Dominant pitching by Bradley and the BP. This team doesn’t hang their heads when they’re down. A couple minor complaints. If Martin is going to pinch run, he should be stealing or attempting to steal. Would have kept them out of the DP that followed. Base stealing has really gone down overall for Twins and Martin hasn’t developed into a good base stealer. Hitting into five DP’s should have triggered some SB attempts or even hit and run. Might’ve kept them out of one or more of those DP’s.

    This deadline is where Zoll will earn his keep, or make it clear we need a new GM. IMO he should add an arm or two without mortgaging the future. If that means trading an asset or two that is internally replaceable (a current position of strength), then that is a move he should make. Jeffers is everyone’s choice to trade since Caratini and Jackson can fill in. That is debatable. I’d rather see them try to sign him for 3 years until the prospects are ready to step in. I’d rather see them deal prospects from the highly touted farm system. Supposedly have an abundance of LH corner outfielders, so that is a position of strength as well. There should be enough history on older prospects that FO can separate the keepers from the suspects. Every trade doesn’t have to be a blockbuster headline trade to help out this year. Can make trade(s) for relief arms that won’t break the bank or rental SP that can eat innings, not necessarily top of the rotation types. I know that’s easier said than done. I think it’s important to show this team and the fans that they’re capable of at least trying to win.

    FYI, according to rumors, TB is targeting Hunter Goodman of the Rockies. As are the Yankees. Remains to be seen if Goodman is made available. Seattle has Raleigh and Garver at catcher. Raleigh and others at DH. Josh Naylor at 1B. Not sure they’d even be interested in Jeffers.

    Yes, my argument was exactly about win now vs build for next year in regards to Jeffers and Ryan trades. That was the whole point of this OP! I didn’t say anything about Buxton or Lackey!! I also stated “I think” when talking about armchair GM’s, which very clearly is an opinion rather than telling someone “how to live their lives, think, or feel”. Thats one huge leap you made there. I guess you took my opinion personal. It wasn’t meant to tell anyone how to feel, or watch, or think about the Twins. You threw in the insult and personal attack “the Pohlads love you though”. Or I guess you think that’s an insult. For a Community Moderator, you seem thin skinned. Instead of moderating, you’re throwing gasoline on the fire!

    I’m not an oddsmaker, but I see they have a 30.1% chance at the postseason, according to Sportsline oddsmakers. So yes, they have a shot😊

    I agree with the jist of this OP. When the team has a chance at the playoffs, they should take it. They can’t keep continually building for the future. At some point they need to add to what they have. Jeffers is possibly one way to do both, add a controllable player for this seasons push that will be here next year. Trading Ryan is the other end of the spectrum. Selling out on this season and next for players that may or may not develop into long term assets. Too many fans look at prospects as if they were sure fire MLB stars. All they are is lottery tickets. I don’t understand the logic of trading a two time all star pitcher for prospects. Different scenario than Jeffers in that Ryan is under control for next year, and at a cheap price! Having Joe anchor the rotation with Lopez next season should be exciting for Twins fans. I think there is a large group of baseball fans into the arm chair GM game more so than watching the current team. Call it looking at what could be instead of what is. Nothing wrong with that except I think they miss out on the good baseball in front of them. I’m enjoying the competitive games now, like the series in Cleveland. Are the Twins as good as the Dodgers? Obviously not. The question really is are they as good as, or better, than the White Sox and/or Guardians. I think they are, but I hope the GM gives this team a chance to prove it. If, in the next two series, they play themselves out of the race, then make trades for the future.

    It would be great to have analysis of past “blockbuster” trades for All Star pitchers. I think it will show that most of the highly rated prospects don’t pan out, similar to what happens with normal player development for every team. Trading a proven All Star pitcher for unproven prospects is a huge gamble. If Tom Pohlad wants to go big as he said, step up and sign Joe. That will reset the narrative about the “cheap Pohlads”. I’d rather hear about a contract negotiation than a trade. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. At some point, you have to build around proven performers on the rosters instead of constantly grasping at lottery tickets (that’s all that prospects are, especially pitching prospects). While Ryan is an All Star, he’s not a number one on a good playoff team, but he is the only proven SP that can be depended on next year. Lopez will be coming off major injury after a year. Everyone else hasn’t shown to be reliable that can be counted on next year and beyond. Unless they’re going full rebuild and not planning to contend next year, they should hang onto proven SP.

    I agree Lewis has now regressed to previous level of play. I don’t see the defensive flaws at 1B though. He looks good there in the games I’ve seen. He still has options, so why wouldn’t the Twins use those options if it’s so urgent to get Royce out of the way instead of trading him for a bucket of balls? It looks like the Twins believe he can unlock more offense so they continue to play him. I think if they trade Jeffers for actual help, then Lewis is sure to keep playing. If they go out and get a 2nd baseman to move Clemons to 1st, then demote Lewis again. If they promote Culpepper, then demote Lewis. At this point, no one cares what Lewis thinks about it, so do what’s best for the team.

    I’d like to see a SP or two added. If they are buyers and not sellers. That would push Prielipp (necessary to manage his innings limit), and Matthews to the BP. That would make the BP better and fortify the rotation for the stretch run. Hancock would be great and add depth to rotation next year. Otherwise a veteran innings eater to be 5th starter that wouldn’t cost much. If they pay Gausman’s full salary for the rest of the year, that would keep the prospect cost down. Maybe he is a possibility…

    Definitely not 1st base. They need someone at 1B that can hit for power. It’s possible that Keaschall could improve in the outfield, but his arm is not good. I think they’ll keep him around another year to see if he improves defensively before they trade him. He was a 2nd round pick and he is very athletic.

    I hope that the hyped outfield prospects can play OF better than Keaschall! If so, the plan should be to trade Keaschall. I don’t see him fitting in anywhere on the field and he sure doesn’t hit enough for DH.
