  1. In reality the correct answer to this is that payroll should be fluid. When you have an influx of young talent that is inexpensive and producing, your payroll can be lower. If you begin to have fewer players who are cheap and producing at a high level, your payroll may need to increase. The idea is that you spend to fill in your gaps until you no longer have to.
  2. I feel like the Twins organization making market-size excuses is a tradition for as long as I can remember. No one cares what your payroll is if you are a contending team. If you want to contend for as cheap as possible then you probably need to invest in ways/people to ensure you get the most out of your young and inexpensive talent.
  3. Yeah...I have a tough time understanding how sports gambling hurts baseball revenue and interest.
  4. A couple thoughts. 1 - Always tough on the fans. 2-It felt like the Twins played to their collective talent, especially at the plate. 3-In the entire MLB, 163 players registered over 401 at bats on the season. The Twins had Willi Castro, Carlos Santana, and Ryan Jeffers. That just isn't going to cut it. 4-Not sure how much Rocco controls that, but the Twins need better talent day after day.
  5. Great for him to hit the 100 games mark. 63rd (ish) or so in AVV non-pitcher salary. Tied for 68th in WAR Not the guy the Twins should be counting on to carry their franchise but also a guy whose salary rank is close to his WAR rank so not terrible value. Twins need more dudes than just Correa / Buxton / Pitching
  6. I don't see the plan wouldn't be Lee at 2B, Correa at SS and Lewis at 3B for next year. Maybe I am off with Lee and Lewis but it makes sense to do that for a year as much as you can. The issue with the Twins (and most teams) is the health of their expensive players. If they play to expectation and play a lot of games, the season will go well. If not, well, we are seeing it.
  7. They get paid more because few people can do what they do. They are tired because they have public expectations (in addition to internal expectations) that few people will ever have. They are traveling a significant amount of the time with little control over when and where they go. Maybe these guys are tired because they are young and inexperienced with how to manage the MLB grind. The "dog days of the season" is a phrase that has been used for a long time. It's a grind. It's up to them to figure it out. Hopefully they will be better prepared for next season if they can keep their respective, high volume roles.
  8. There are some significantly uninformed takes in this thread. There is a mental and physical grind to all sports, but baseball is the one that deals you the most failure over the longest period of time. Not mention the grind of being on the road (which is a drain), the pressure to produce, and having to rehab multiple injuries in-season while finding ways to adjust. That is the reality and that is what they get paid to do, but it doesn't make it easy. One of the best players on the Twins is struggling because his body has not been able to consistently play this number of games in a row for a long time. He is working through figuring it out. He is trying to figure that out, his body out, and new positions all the while being asked to carry an already undermanned roster. I don't understand tearing down one of the teams best players because he was vulnerable and shared his frustrations.
  9. And I don't disagree with that assertion. It just is a continuation of bad looks for the franchise. It isn't just the inactivity at the trade deadline. It is the inactivity of the trade deadline along with the slashing of payroll...and the issues with the TV deal...and the increase in ticket prices...and the attacking of the fans.
  10. The narrative that the family worth 3.8 billion in 2015 (per Forbes) in an era where sport's tv/streaming rights are at an all time high needs to pinch pennies to operate is interesting.
  11. And just to be clear, here is my understanding of the TV deal. The Twins chose a deal without knowing and/or caring of the expiration or issue with the partnership agreement between Diamond Sport's Group and Comcast. Also a deal that prohibited or did not offer in-market streaming options. So they opted for more dollars and less control (security) of how their fans could watch the team. All of this after messaging to the fan base that a slash in payroll was due to an increase in viewership availability. None of this looks competent. If I am missing information, please let me know.
  12. I am certainly not privy to every tv deal the Twins were offered. I don't know your connections. What I can say is that in a time where sports TV rights are inarguably a clear print-fest, any time a team fails to procure one, it is on them. Whether they overplayed their hand, underplayed their hand, struck too soon or too late...those are just excuses that competent business don't generally have to use.
  13. The organization is the one cutting payroll and citing payroll concerns this past year and over the years. Being cheap when you have a history and reputation as cheap, is not going to be taken as an organization committed to winning. You say the Twins aren't a player or two away...ok, but they never are because of how the franchise chooses to operate. In term's of developing their own talent...what top players have they developed recently? Duran (even though they traded for him) is about the closest thing.
  14. The fumbling of the TV deal alone is Pac 12 football level incompetent. That is a pure financial and business failure which has nothing to do with winning games. Doing this while also attacking and alienating your fan base is not a sign of a middle of the pack owner. At my most generous I would state that the Polhad's are comfortable being a middle of the pack MLB team in terms of wins that will at times, push for the playoffs.
  15. I will add that, IMO, the Twins issue isn't a lack of average players, it is a lack of high level players.
  16. I agree that the upgrade Kikuchi would provide is probably not worth the prospects and cash it would require. The Twins best hope for a title is having several cheap prospects all elevate at the same time, and then catching lightning in a bottle.
  17. It seems like almost any player that would have required payroll additions were not pursued. That is based upon the Twins only adding one player at a very minimal cost. I believe it is a more plausible explanation than a Twins were pursuing several players and just couldn't get any deals done while several other teams were.
  18. I think it is reasonable to expect some of these things to occur. I agree with most that Falvey, Lavine, and Rocco probably all could find similar jobs around the league. They are almost here until they don't want to be. I wouldn't expect all three of Lopez, Correa, and Duran to get traded but I would not be shocked if Duran and one of Lopez/Correa were moved. Duran is still a sell high in some regards as is Lopez. Correa would be selling low to some degree, but maybe not if he gets back and produces over the rest of the year. If Festa looks good along side Ober and Ryan, Lopez becomes a more viable move.
  19. I quibble with the word usage of "reasons" in the title. I think they are the best explanations for the inactivity. The Twins are good enough as-is to compete for a playoff spot which is the bat the Pohlad's have set. Because of this, there was not any need to add payroll. I do wonder if Correa gets moved next year or in the off-season. It seems like the Twins are at the cusp of maximizing the value created by some good prospects to compete for the playoffs while cutting more payroll.
  20. This is as expected IMO. The Twins (Pohlad) are not a serious MLB franchise in terms of pursuing titles. They do work to balance being average and minimizing payroll. It is basically a standard business model. What is the path to be average to above average at the lowest cost possible? It is why I follow the Twins sporadically and mostly on this site. I have spent too much of my life being more concerned with the Twins winning games than the owners are. Now they don't get any of my money and only a minimal amount of my time.
  21. I believe this is ideal, but I have no issue if the Twins decide to move on.
  22. People are assuming there will be a roster problem because they are assuming we will have long stretches where all of Polanco, Lewis, Correa, and Julien will be healthy, that Lee will just thrive in the majors, and Julien won't regress, And assuming Buxton will be filling the DH spot, and producing in it. I think the Twins should stand pat, and deal with the problem if all of those things occur.
  23. He has been great so far which is all you can ask. I would hesitate to trade any of these young players until we have seen which of them can be successful over longer stretches of time. Let's enjoy some roster depth over the next year, and then see where moves can be made.
  24. The Twins are in a good space to compete for sure. Injuries are always a concern which is one reason I am not ready to bail on Julien or Polanco to try to solve problems that have not arrived yet. They are potentially in a place to move on from Buxton should his career be even more impacted by health. Correa doesn't have to the guy who carries the roster every game which benefits him. Some potentially solid pieces at the minor league level, and hopefully we end up having some superstars on this roster in a few years.
  25. Lewis has been awesome. Polanco back at home playing 2B. Two very clutch hitters. Hopefully this enables Correa to relax at the plate a bit and not put so much pressure on himself to carry the team. Julien, Wallner, and Solano are going to have ups and downs, but as long as the timely hitting continues, wins should follow.
